You mentioned Steam. I've been having problems with getting kicked off of Blizard's Battlenet. While I haven't watched my packets, I'm quite sure it's because of Comcast. After about an hour or so my connection is instantly dropped, not even a lag out.
The whole problem with DRM is that it does NOT stop those it's trying to. DRM is used to stop piracy (Or so they say). But the pirates and advanced users KNOW this and generally know a way around it (or are working on one). At the end of the day, it's the average user who gets hurt by DRM.
Pirates will always find ways around DRM. By restricting the average user's rights, they are only encouraging users to find other ways (general illegal) to do things they SHOULD be able to do.
I have a different problem with TV shows. I fail to understand why I should PAY to watch a FREE show on my local drive simply because I'm not on the internet. My TV show of choice shows on free TV. However because I'm on a train during that hour, My only LEGAL choice would be buy the ep. off of iTunes even though I should be able to watch it for free. And even if I recorded it at home, I can't legally copy it to my laptop. This is why I have no problem with pirated TV shows. All it does is keep a free media free. iTunes (in TV's case) is making MONEY off of a free show. That's not an alternative, that THEFT.
Well as someone said(I think on South Park actually), what do you do when you're choices are a total idiot and a douche?
It was a Shit and a Douche. They were voting for school mascots and the options were either a Shit Sandwich or a Douche.
I'm just worried that the full touch screen would make it much harder to use.
I often change songs and volume on mine by simply feeling where I am on the wheel. With the whole thing being a touch screen I would have to pull my iPod out publicly whenever I wanted to do anything as simple and turn down the volume.
As obvious as that is, it would be a real pain.
IRC also has a bad reputation in modern times.
While there are many legal uses for IRC networks, all the main illegal content starts via IRC. Now-a-days most people using IRC are Gamers and Hackers.
Plus, is there really a need for more IRC servers? Most of the big ones can handle them selfs...
The Hubble is getting old.
I'm pretty sure they were going to stop servicing it.
The question is: Will they come up with a replacement or try to fix the Hubble again?
And would be cost effective to repair it again or has it's time finally come?
The Azureus Client that the site download was very unstable for me.
When I when into the settings my computer would panic and explode. After 2 BsoDs & Re-boots I'm never touching that site again:-P
DSL (Damn Small Linux) is also a good thing to have if you ever have to mess with a very old computer.
It's not as "newbie friendly" as Knoppix (which is great, of course), bet it can also get the job done and you can probably get it running on any computer made within at least the last 10 years if not 15 or more...
PortableApps.com has tons of great stuff. I use Portable Firefox all the time when I'm on the run and can't use my own laptop.
I've also been crazy enought to run Steam on one of my 1 gig thumb drives. Simply install Steam and the games of your choice localy (I did it with Half-Life and TFC). Then copy the whole Steam folder to your thumb drive. While updates take a long time, booting the game and downloading new maps isn't nearly as bad as you would think. Lag was minimal when I tested.
Some credit card companies have a small program which gives you a temporary Credit Card Number which is only usable once online. While this is useful for paying for one thing, it become a problem when paying for some thing like a webserver which is automaticly renewed every year. This is because when the year comes around the company can't charge a fake credit card number.
That only technically. Schools shouldn't truly have the right to re-write the laws to their liking, but nothing is stopping them. The local high school here has searched students' cars and persons without warrants or permission. If a student tries to stop the school they pull their favorite rule "disobedience". The school made it so that if a student questions a teacher (ex: "Why am I being taken to the office?") or doesn't obey an order (ex: "No I will no remove my pants for you to inspect") they can get in even more trouble. And the cops are the ones searching the cars. And if a student tries to say that a warrant is needed the cops say that they don't because they can easily have one written.
Now I don't live in a tough area. This isn't a "poor gang area", this is a rich suburb. (This actually makes it worse because student can get off anything by hiring big money layers.)
This sounds crazy. This sounds like lies. But they aren't.
I'm actually playing WCIII on bnet so I think it's slightly different. WoW runs on their own servers.

powerfolder has a freeware version, but nothing on it's website says that it's open source.

I've never seen so many jokes hose-down a good topic...
However I must admit, I'm more of a Spaceballs 1989 Fan...
Am I the only person who thinks SOMEONE has watching "war games" FAR too many times?

I do, however has a M$ tee shirt with Paris Hilton's name on it in HUGE PINK LETTERS. Thank you ACM!
How can my post be redundant if it was the first one posted? :-P
Note to those with mod point: Check the TIME
Wait- Slashdot now let's people post ads as news?
Does fertility really matter? I mean, we're posting on SLASHDOT. If we had a life, we wouldn't need to post about cooling our laptops on slashdot...
Or did it get Slashed and then dotted? O_o
If you can boot to a CD then why not just use one of the million secure live linux boot CDs?

"Captain Copyright! He's our hero! Going to bring all our money down to ZERO..."
So who is going to pre-release a torrent of all the Captain Copyright Comics?
