Thank you for bringing up the Fiona Apple album. I was never a fan, but on a whim I downloaded the album* and loved it. It's definitely one of the better bits of music I've listened to recently.
Cheers.

Well, it's a product of countries not adhereing to GATT, America isn't the only one. There are countries in southeast asia that now import rather than export rice, strange to comprehend...it just makes more sense for them to focus on other aspects of their economies than it does to compete.
Forty years in the past the area of Ontario I live in had a textile based economy and exported more wool than anywhere else in the world, now that's all done in other places and you rarely see a sheep in a field. Change happens.
I would imagine that in forty years time we'll be buying our food from other countries and our economy will be purely information based. The divide between these two worlds will be more complete than it is now, and I'll be telling my Grandkids about the birth of the internet and the computer. Either that or we'll all be eaten by space vampires.
I'm sure American wheat farmers feel the same way about the Canadian wheat farmers who are losing their farms and complaining about American subsidies.
No, it looks like you've got it. I myself was unsure abotu said legislation as it was coming to pass. I very much liked the spirit in which it was brought about, but was unsure about how it would be put to use. I've since revised my opinion and like that it is utilized with specificity.
As an experiment tonight I showed the trailer for this to a non-geek friend as I was burning her a cd. After watching the trailer she said "Ooh, that looks a little better than the last two, they had such a strange style to them, can't wait to see it".
I then showed her the real trailer and she said "meh".
Personally I'm interested to see what Ep3 has in store for us as the last darkish Star Wars movie (Empire) was the one that has held me in thrall for all of these years. It may be awful, or it could be good...I hear there's a dialogue coach onboard this time around.
While I do agree with you that a lot of what special effects should do is better as substance than flash, and that the best CG work is that which no one notices you must realize that you're comparing a movie set in 50's - 70's America to one which is set in space, full of technology, and built as something new from the ground up.
The CG award went to Forest Gump because they did a wonderful job of the tv scenes in which Gump was placed next to and interacting with various famous figures from the past, and it was done in a realistic fashion. That is very different from what the artists working on Star Wars attempt to accomplish.
I do agree that graphically, Star Wars, particularly Ep II, has been a little bit too polished, but to compare it to Forest Gump in any way is a stretch. Try to stick to a single genre or style of film-making when making movie to movie comparisons.
Let me know if I'm over-reaching with this, but I'm a film student and it comes naturally.
I took the introduction of the fact that the force was active in people through midichlorians to be indicative of the level of knowledge the Jedi's and the Jedi Council had about themselves at the time, compared to the folk-lore-like manner in which Luke was taught by Ben and Yoda. It seems to make it look like the lessons learned in the first-made trilogy comment on the lessons taught in the second-made trilogy. Something was definitely wrong, in that the Jedi Order failed and teaching of the use of the force fell back to a more natural religious, rather than scientific, state.
I've never heard the theme song to Enterprise. The first time I heard the opening line and thought to myself that it sounded disturbingly like Rod Stewart . Much like I scrolled past your post containing these words or a funny version of them, I fast forward past the song.
Thing with Don Cherry, love him as most Canadians do, he's just a crotchety old man, a colour commentator on a sports show. It's a sign of how seriously we take our hockey that we look at him in the same light as we do news reporters.
You sound like you're trying to shape some kind of community out of this mess. That's something that was considered by many of the people with user id's an order of magnitude lower than yours and mine. It's really only gotten worse since I've come, I suggest you not worry about shaping this community, go with the flow, and take from it what you can get. If you're looking for communities that can still be saved, try something with less than tens of millions of members, maybe theworldforum.
I've never had a problem with suprnova.org when using it's resources for "research" (wink, wink, nudge, nudge). I have gone to suprnova.com and suprnova.net, just to see what the "scammers" are up to, and it is definitely not pretty. Basically, if you're not going to.org, you're in trouble. I welcome you to the group of people in the know.
Personally, for my BT needs I prefer smaller groups of people posting torrents, where there is a feedback process and you get to know the people posting things as well as have the ability to read about each torrent before you dl it.
I just watched one of the most interesting pieces of media I've seen in a while. It's basically a look back at the growth of media and the growth of google from 2014. If you've got 8 minutes to spare on something that might be fascinating, check it out.
Hmmm, I wouldn't consider the content of Slashdot, or the information as you refer to it, to be open-source. Slashcode is open-source, but I think you should read the copyright claim at the bottom of the page you're reading.
I'm not complaining about it, just letting you know.
Also, why were you posting AC?...was that a (shudder) dangerous comment?
This is, and I don't think I'm wrong here, for the people that care about the Nintendo DS that headline and story were quite sufficient to tell them what they want to know. If you don't understand the story, why be bothered? There was a story earlier today about a movie about Babylon 5, which I've never watched and don't really know about. I felt free to skip the story. It's ok to be out of the loop on things you don't care about, you won't lose your geek licence.

That was taken care of the first day of release. I've always been impressed at how quickly the crackers work.
Violence is a meme? Prove it.
Second Paragraph, agreed.
Ummm, word.
I for one wasn't feeling the "Old Korean People" line of jokery.

Proper respect.
The CG actually looks quite good, particularly when you have no choice but to stand it up next to some of the highest CG budgets ever.
Looks like it was shot in digital, or high-quality video, lacking that grainy feel, and not filtered to hell like Ep II.
Oh, and women fighting with light-sabers...sure to provoke some kind of reaction in this crowd.

Trying too hard?
Sadly, same here.....though I even went through the "it's the west coast, time difference, just click" thing.
Mod this whole thread as a waste of time. Mod me insightful.

*looks glum
Don't talk about hockey.

Just some friendly advice.
Don't forget those that are still trying to figure out what they really 'meant' with the Matrix Trilogy. Cuz, it was deep, yaknow?
Jesus works on Linux?
I didn't know that file formats could be illegal. Got any citations on that one?
All of the talk about the number 37 reminded me of Clerks, which I watched this afternoon.
37
