When I was playing Tuba in the school band, the director would always impress that the low brass was most important. Lower pitches travel further than higher pitches, but higher pitches had more distinction.
I would imagine our hunter/gather ancestors would hear a deep growl and maybe know something is there to kill and eat, or run because it will eat me. Where as the high pitched screams said "I'm/my child/you are in danger, listen to my warning."
So it would notify more people like you say, but I think when the GP said less omnidirectional, he just meant no matter where you stand, you know where the warning is coming from.
Now I need to go study some english, so I can know what omnidirectional really means:S
I think it's a mindset. Maybe it just makes more sense to Europeans to not have guns. But in the US, there are tons of reasons why people feel they would need a gun. Heck, if it weren't for our right to have guns, we would have been screwed during the revolution.
But in my house, there won't be guns. If there is going to be a gun in the house, it will belong to an Adult, and it will be with them at all times till they leave my house. I have a kid in the house, my kid might get curious, and though I will teach her about gun safety, I'm not going to risk her forgetting what she knows so she can get a good look at the business end.
Don't get me wrong, I think it's great we can have guns. In this country, people have the mindset that they can do what ever they want, so we get gangster kids and knuckleheads running around with guns showing off how cool they are, and killing rivals and innocent people. If we take our guns away, we will still have this problem with gangsters and knuckleheads who (because we live in a 'free' country) think they are above the law and can do what they want. Only now, if we had no guns, I won't have a deterrent for that kid, I can't tell them I have a gun, and I will shoot them if they enter my home.
Now I don't own a gun, but I know all about gun safety, I grew up with guns in my life. If I were to own one, my child would also know about gun safety. But she won't even know I have a gun until (big IF) I have to use it to defend my family, or she is older and mature enough to understand its purpose.
I don't think gun control would work well in the US, mostly because of our combined 'I'm above the law' mindset, that makes the mass think they can do what ever they want.
Sure, most of the claims they make on Linux are really attacks, and some of the claims they make for Windows are exaggerations, but when it comes to easy of use, and support, I agree.
I have 5 computers at my home, all of them run some version of Windows. They all worked out of the box, my Anti-Virus and other security software does it's job quite well. And when there is a problem, I know how to fix it, I know where to look, it's familiar.
Every attempt I've made to job on the Linux band-wagon fails. When it comes to IT I'm not THE expert, I'm also not a novice. But I can't get Linux to work for me, I can't get it to do what I want. Once my computer is setup with some flavor of Linux, I can browse the internet, and edit text documents. My videos don't work, my voice chat doesn't work, my games don't work. And when I try to get help, I don't even know where to look, I don't have any numbers to call, and when I find some forum and post my problem, I might get a response, and that response might have language I understand, and it MIGHT solve my problem. With my Windows machines, I have numbers, I know where to look, and if I need support I always get an answer, and I always understand what the help says, and I always get my problem solved.
Now I will admit, it has been a while since I tried Linux. Windows does cost a VERY pretty penny, and I have a laptop that is in some serious need for change. So slashdot, this isn't a challenge, this is a real outreach. Me already having a bad experience with the switch to Linux, and being spoiled with Windows what Flavor would be best for me?
My Laptop is currently running XP. AMD Athlon 64bit processor, (~2Ghz, I can't really get to it right now to check), Half a Gig of ram. I would like it to run my SNES emulator, browse the internet, some sort of office suite, Video chat (For my mother). And I'd like to be able to run Starcraft 1 (So maybe I need wine?) Also, if it's possible, I have an ehome infrared reciever, and a haupauge tuner. If I could have those working to replace MCE I would be sold. So what Linux would be best for me?
So is Arthur Laurents a thief as well for West Side Story? Maybe Karen McCullah Lutz is also a thief for 10 Things I Hate About You?
How about Ever After? Are those writers evil? Taking an ancient tale, spinning the details and making it more enjoyable for the current generation is VERY common practice, and has been for a very long time. Calling it their own, is calling it their version of the story.
I don't know what The Little Mermaid you saw, but the one I saw showed a disobedient child getting into a whole hell of a lot of trouble, nearly losing everything she loved, because she disobeyed her father.
I can agree with the Disney channels being junk (Save SOME shows on playhouse Disney.) but some of the classic movies are very good for children. I grew up watching Disney movies, so did my brothers and sister. We are all fairly successful, well mannered, mature individuals. We are spread all over Phoenix, and still manage to get together on Sundays, and have wholesome family time.
I want some examples of how Disney is detrimental to the child/parent relationship. And I want examples of how Disney undermines basic human values.
Let's assume it is true. Is my family the exception that proves the rule? Why is it that my Mom and Dad are very important to me, when I grew up watching Disney movies for hours on end? I'm willing to bet that a lot of this "Blame Disney" and other media bashing nonsense could be plain bad parenting.
But I will agree with you jerwinch, the suite life with Zach and Cody, is straight nonsense. It's hard to find good TV shows in general, but Disney is not bad as a whole.
In his defense, I have been actively searching for a Job for 6 months, and only JUST scored one. My brother who is just as qualified as I am, can't get a job at McDonalds, because of this economic crisis you may have heard of.
I may not know the numbers, and I may not know why times are bad, but some of us experience it first hand.
If I put a huge chunk of money into a pot, money that I can't choose to put in there or not, I better damn well be able to pull that money out for months at a time when no one will hire me.
Maybe a laptop with a current and well working OS on it. Get all the files/applications we want little miss one year old to see in the future, and then turn it off. Stuff the power cable, laptop, maybe physical copies of media, all into the box and store it away.
This way, you don't have to worry about legacy software right? Everything should work together right out of the box.
This kind of reminds me of the time I went digging through my families old stuff, and pulled out an Atari 2600! Of course, some of the games were in bad shape, as this was NOT in a time capsule.
I don't doubt that the UK does it right. I guess my side seemed kind of broad. My government can't do a lot of things right, what makes them think they can do socialized health care right.
We already have public options. Here in AZ we have AHCCCS. We have Medicare/Medicaid, and a number of other options per state. All of these have problems.
My country has a history, once they are given power, they abuse it, or screw it up, and point the blame somewhere else. I guess I haven't a problem with socialized health care, but I do have a problem with the way my government handles the things they already have control over.
My daughter had Leukemia, she passed away earlier this year. It still works fine, I still shouldn't have to pay for your health care. We got help for hers, but it wasn't all payed for, I still owe money.
But if it wasn't for those tradesmen, with a skill that they worked hard to learn, and if it wasn't for their interest in hematology, and oncology, my daughter would not have gotten the care she did.
Those doctors helped her beat the cancer, (She got sick from having no immune system, that's what we lost her from.) I truly believe that if they didn't earn that money, and say, " Hey, I worked hard to learn this, I will charge for my goods." she wouldn't have gotten expert care.
My dad was a mason for ~30-40 years. He can build a damn good wall, and a damn good house. He could build one for you. Don't you deserve shelter? Doesn't he deserve to get paid what he chooses for his skill and trade? Health care is a need, but I shouldn't have to pay for you to get it. I should be paying those men and women who work hard to learn how to treat people.
Have you ever waited at the MVD? You want those same people to choose when you can be treated?
Sounds to me like Independence Day got a lot of people thinking about aliens. So than, when they look at the sky, and see something they don't recognize, it must be an alien/ufo.
I want to know why we always have crummy video of some ufo, when everyone has a camera on there cell phones, with fairly good resolution?

I guess disfellowship, and excommunication have a bad ring to it. In the LDS church, you are excommunicated for at least a year, to give you ample time to really repent of what ever you did. But you are not outcast.
This is true, and it's terrible. I'm LDS, I've always been taught to love my enemy's. Even Jesus when he was hung on the cross asked God to "forgive them...they know not what they do". This should apply to everything, even "hostile" websites.
I like to compare it to politics. Republican vs. Democrat. Stereotypical republican might say "You darn pinko hippy, you need to quit threatening our values!" And the stereotypical democrat might say, "Silly bible thumper, it's time for a change!" But neither will change there minds on the issue because of contention. And the spirit of contention cannot see reason.
So if you want someone to believe as you do, you can't challenge them to defend there side, because they will defend there side. You also can't force your side on them. Engaging someone to change there mind, when they already made it up, doesn't work if you make your side like just as hostile as these "hostile" websites.
I'm not in the Service, but my Children's God Father is. He uses Myspace regularly to email us. Occasionally he will post new pictures on his site, it's very nice to have that so we can be in touch.
But really, how much of an inconvenience is it going to be when he has to open up his regular old Hotmail, create a contact group with all the right people in it, attach some pictures, and hit send?
I think this is a great idea. When you are on the Job, you should not be on social networking sites. I have not seen one call center, (I mostly do call center work) where IT has aloud myspace, or something similar. Even when we had down time, myspace was not aloud. Email was fine.
If you join the service, and get stationed somewhere like Iraq, that's just the way it goes. When you sign on, you are giving away the right to do what ever you want. The internet for soldiers is a privilege to begin with.
Sounds like Jen from The IT Crowd. If you Slashdotters haven't seen that show, it's pretty funny, and I think you will see some similarities between Jen (In Charge of IT on the show) and 'Little miss entitlement'.
Is it just me, or is worrying about representing different Races and Cultures what makes this become a problem? I'd rather it be that everyone "not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character." As soon as you start saying things like "I'm so proud to be Irish/Black/Hispanic/insert culture or race here" that's fine. But once you expect to have that recognized rather than let anyone get to know you, than you are being asked to be judged by the color of your skin, right?
I'm white, born and raised in Arizona, come from a poor part of town. So what? Shouldn't tell anything about me by all that.
When I was in high school, I had a black friend who quit the ebony club. I asked him why, this is what he said, " I thought it was going to be teaching me about African culture, I really would like to know what my ancestors did. Not just the Civil Rights stuff, or slavery. I want ancient history. Instead, I'm being asked to promote black people. Almost like Black Power!" We decided to try and start an "Ivory" club, the Vice Principal told me it sounded like the KKK.
It is cool to recognize what my Ancestors did, my people did. It's cool to hear about my ancestors. But what does that have to do with me? I have some stories I can take morals from, but don't assume you know me because I am a White boy from Laveen Arizona. And I would love to be judged by the content of my Character.
So frankly, I don't care about ethnic or racial diversity in games. When I played TES IV: Oblivion, I made my Character ( A Bosmer), and I made him look like me. So naturally, my Character was a white male. I'll tell you what, those goram guards don't give a damn what race I am, if they catch me stealing. "Halt! You violated the law...."
I agree with you on that. I never played Wind Waker, Zelda II, the oracle series, minish cap, yada yada...
While pondering the Zelda time line (like you said, it is superfluous). I started looking things up, and stumbled on this video http://www.gametrailers.com/video/zelda-retrospective-the-legend/15194 I think this really makes sense of it all, if you are into making these kind of connections.
I think the Zelda series is still supposed to be on a (mostly) Linear time line. I think Nintendo said OoT was supposed to be first in the time line. The original LoZ was like number 8? It's supposed to be a Different Link, Zelda, and Ganondorf each time, whether they be decendents or different people all together that were given the same name by fate.
The real main element that never changes is the Triforce of Power needing the Triforce of Wisdom to gain true power, or get Wisdom out of the way, and the Triforce of Courage getting involved and putting a stop to the Power Struggle.
I agree with you on some parts when it comes to the Half Life series. Though, what helps me get through it, is assuming Gordon Freeman doesn't feel like a hero. Only he is more like an eager young Scientist, who just did what he was told in the first one, and when it gets to the second one, is so involved now, he can't go back. And remember, in the second one he is still being told what to do by his scientist mentors.
I always pictured a movie based on Half Life, having Gordon be the main Character. But still no talking, not because he is mute, but because he is so eager to learn, and so polite, that every time he tries to talk, he gets interrupted. " well if......*Sigh* *Rolls eyes*....*Nods head*........may....*Sigh* *Angry face behind your back*..."
Don't worry, you didn't come off that way, I was just pointing out a stereotype.
What I meant with that uniform ID thought was, "It is true that we would have to agree on a uniform idea of ID" and only believe to be true, for the sake of having a designer involved. it seems we are on the same page with amateur theology:P.
So as long as we are on the topic of amateur theology.... I would be perfectly happy with the idea that the designer knew this (Lack of?) evolution to occur, but didn't have a reason for it to occur. If I knew everything, and I created a universe with laws, I would know evolution would occur. And I would know that one day, something would evolve, and sometime after that, it may be useless. But it does not need a purpose.
Do you think that this tree could have been a bad design? (Let's assume there is a designer just for the sake of the discussion.)
I am a Mormon. I have faith God is there, and I believe it to be true. On the other hand, it is not falsifiable, which means it can't be proven either, to anyone. I won't begin to say I know the true intentions of the Designer, but it is interesting to me that so many atheists ( Not All ) seem threatened by the idea that the universe was created by someONE, as opposed to someTHING.
I agree with you Funkatron. This subject is not Scientific. If we are to have a scientific discussion, and some how have ID involved, we would all have to first agree on a uniform idea on ID, and all agree that for the topic on hand, it is true. But most religions don't agree. So let's keep it that way.

I agree with you on that. I never played Wind Waker, Zelda II, the oracle series, minish cap, yada yada...
While pondering the Zelda time line (like you said, it is superfluous). I started looking things up, and stumbled on this video http://www.gametrailers.com/video/zelda-retrospective-the-legend/15194
I think this really makes sense of it all, if you are into making these kind of connections.
What I meant with that uniform ID thought was, "It is true that we would have to agree on a uniform idea of ID" and only believe to be true, for the sake of having a designer involved. it seems we are on the same page with amateur theology :P.
I'm gonna say what you just said, by quoting one line from Braveheart.
"FREEEEEDOOOOOMM!!!!!!!!!"
Now back to this interesting tree...
