This is a very exciting development. I wonder whether there will be a role for OSS. What would it take to develop "Open Source" hardware powered by OSS to exploit this idea fully?
I am tired of my cell phone provider myself, mainly because of contracts and hidden fees/costs.
If Google goes this route they damn well better have something compatible with Linux or they are going to be losing a lot of users.
A lot of users? I doubt that to be sincere. And by the way...to who will these users run? Yahoo? I doubt because Yahoo were pushing IE7 not so long ago...and their media site (Launchcast) still makes Linux and even Firefox choke!
I am afraid Linux users might be doomed if Google goes through with this development. You see, most distros will not install Adobe's flash player by default...and even when it's installed, it chokes on web videos because it is not that up-to-date. Sometimes, it's because of conflicts within the Linux product itself.
On a personal front, I will be pissed if I have to watch a video just because I searched for my favorite item.
I will quote...
"Today, Mindbridge has repurposed itself as an open-source-friendly company, and revamped its infrastructure to run completely on Linux and other open source software. .
.
.
Then later in the introductory piece...
We began a systematic but slow flipping of servers from the Microsoft world over to predominantly Linux -- although there are a few BSD boxes around as well,' Christian says. 'It's to the point that today I only have two production Windows servers left, out of 15 or so.'"
Emphasis mine by the way; the two words in bold appear to be contradictory...or are they?
At first, I thought this thing was Australian made...but on further reading, I realized it was designed [and probably built] in San Fransisco. After a long time, being frustrated by America's out-sourcing of US manufacturing, I am happy I am American once again.
What we now need, is to recapture the electronics and auto manufacturing leads from Japan, China and South Korea.
What a stint Mr. Gonzales had with my president's White house...but I thought he'd hang on. I will remember him for his 63 times he invoked the "I don't recall..." mantra. On the other hand, I wonder whether any slashdotter can tell me what good has been accomplished by my president to-date. Sincerely, I am at a loss to find anything worthy of a mention.
Here's another one...the VP also used this "I do not recall..." slogan while under fire. It's about time our constitution was amended to automatically have a senior official resign when the all of a sudden they cannot recall matters so important and held so dear to these United States.
The US amazes me. The government in that great land sees Iran as an axis of evil, just because the present ruling "Mullahs" and clerics overthrew the dictator that the US was supporting! Question is...What about Saudi Arabia?
The majority of Bin Laden's lieutenants came from that very oppressive country. The US looks the other way. Once their oil dries up, I am sure the US will pounce on them like a vulture.
Does anyone know what OS those Skype servers are running? If the OS is Linux, then I blame Skype administrators. If it is any flavour of Windows, then I blame Microsoft. Now, some of you might say I am biased.
I do not use Opera these days, but used it from 2000/2001. Those days, the Firefox browser, then called Phoenix or so really sucked! Question though...Are these Opera guys really making money off Opera? The Firefox folks are not doing badly with their product. How are Opera doing?
Clarify for me please. From what I know, Microsoft will still control Silverlight's development. If I am right, then I guess the Linux version will always be "inferior" as compared to its Windows counterpart, right?
Anyone remember how IE and Microsoft Office had similar stories on Windows and the Mac? Tell me this will not happen again.
In the last century, it was "The Russians are coming..." This should be changed to "The Chinese are coming...". My fellow Americans, just take note. I have come to realize that I cannot live without getting a fell of China in my daily life.
Here's why: -
1: All my electroic stuff save my monitor are Chinese made.
2: On my way to work, I ride on Chinese made tires.
3: My clothing is Chinese made...the same applies to
4: Furniture
5: Coffee maker
6: and so many others.
I am beginning to think that these Chinese could one day place sanctions on the US...a pretty scary thought. The other day, they shot a satellite from orbit. On this front, we thought Russia was our only competition. Are we prepared?
MythTV, though a very ambitious and interesting application, is quite difficult to get installed and working. I gave up! But I will try again next year when I have different hardware.
Why on earth won't Linux developers create a script of some sort that analyzes the system and takes care of ALL dependencies? MythTV from its screenshots looks wonderful and fully capable...getting it installed and remaining sane afterwards is almost impossible at least in my opinion.
The other day, while installing an app from a tarball I failed at the make command. I then installed what make wanted but got some warning in the process. I did not give it much thought. It was just a warning. Then I got the shock of my life...my Joomla powered site "hanged" followed by the keyboard and mouse becoming unresponsive. On rebooting, I could not get into run level 3!
I am not so much of a Joe User after all all the versions I installed were >= to versions that were required for a trouble free system.
Guys, in the Linux world, we still have a long way to go. As mentioned above about MythTV, I'll try again next year.
That's why the status quo involving Apache will result in Apache continuing to lose market share. Sadly, it will be too late before folks like you begin to provide what n00bs want. I was one of the some years ago and Apache's config files were problematic to me.
On the other hand, there is a configuration utlity for Apache on Windows, which is not bad at all. Can you say the availability of this utility is having negative results for Apache? Have a look.
What about Apache provisioning a GUI utility that actually creates those text files? I personally found Apache's configuration files quite cumbersome to understand...coming from a n00b's point of view.
But I am almost an expert now. IIS was not an option because I really wanted to understand Apache. I doubt everyone has that patience and I am not alone!
While there seems to be ways to "listen" and detect potential problems with bridges, I doubt that the bureaucracy of government will ever make the remedies work.
Coupled with my government's incompetence, bigotry and history of wasting money (read Iraq), it will surely be a wonder if this setup ever works. God help us!
I wonder whether the so called Linux sellouts (read Novell, Linspire, Xandros) will be next. After all, fonts on these Linux systems and Linux in general are still very very wanting.
I must say that there is an effort in the KDE development circles to make the KDE desktop and internet experience through Konqueror, the best it can be.
I wonder how they came to the conclusion that there is no demand? Was there a survey among potential new PC buyers? Or is this company another Microsoft buddy, I wonder.
Having lurked on http://www.lkml.org/ for several years, I find Linus to be rather rude. May be it's because English is not his first language...so words are not well chosen. I must say though, that I excuse him because he produces, [or helps produce] a very useful product on the world today. That is the Linux kernel.
Is it possible to implement with relative ease into ODF, all the features that Microsoft sees lacking in ODF? If possible, Microsoft should help in this effort and then standardize on ODF or tell us the disadvantages of using ODF together with all features that Microsoft wants.
I mean, what if the vaccine fails to work? Are you then doomed for life in such a case? I know that the AIDS viruses employed in the vaccine are extremely weak, but again, what if all this fails to work? AIDS is no joke guys!
I was in Uganda on a Technical Advisory mission in 2002 and was outraged by the cost of internet connections down there. For a 128Kbps (down) and 32 (up) link, the organization was forking US$275 per month. This was for unlimited use.
A bit off-topic here: I also got educated in a way...that is...I realized that it is actually hotter in USA (Texas) than in some of these African countries that we think are way too hot. Temperatures never went above 86 degrees F, in the capital (Kampala)...compared to the 113 degrees in some parts of the US lately.
Have we been wrong all along by addressing non-white/Hispanic or Indian Americans as "Americans of African decent?" It appears we'll all have roots in Africa. In any case those "black" Americans look more brown than black to me.
A more accurate description should be "brown Americans". How about that?
What amazes me is the fact that most pundits warned Linspire about Microsoft's actions while citing its past actions. They did not listen and even went ahead to defend their position. I wonder how they (Linspire folks) feel now.
I am tired of my cell phone provider myself, mainly because of contracts and hidden fees/costs.

Did the GP talk about `invalidation' at all? Or you did not fully understand what he meant....sheesh!
Emphasis mine by the way; the two words in bold appear to be contradictory...or are they?

Read that quote again (emphasis mine), and tell us whether you'd still post the comment you posted. If you would, I give up, my lord!
A more accurate description should be "brown Americans". How about that?
