Microsoft and Sun had a contract that Microsoft violated. The contract stipulated that Java was not to be modified in any way to make it incompatible. But Microsoft did just that. How was forcing them to include Sun's JVM not a suitable punishment? And why was it important enough for the appeals court to overturn the lower court's decision?
Software patents are wrong no matter how you slice it. If we* are against software patents when it hurts us, we should also be against them when it helps us.
* FOSS supporters who are against software patents - If you don't fit under that umbrella, I'm not talking about you.
How is ctrl+k too much to type? And how is switching(ctrl+l / ctrl+k) between address bar and search bar too much "brainenergy"? They are two totally separate things and perform completely different functions! It's your brain that is foobared. Separate these functions in your mind and you will feel better:)
When the installed base of Linux users with Xft2 becomes large enough, Mozilla will be built with Xft2 support by default. Currently, you have to either build Moz yourself, or get an rpm or deb or whatever, and I think they have some Xft2 enabled builds available on Mozilla.org's ftp.
Yes, Mozilla does look like ass otherwise. And not nice ass, I'm talking Rosie O'Donnell ass.
Yes, this is frustrating. One thing you can do though is to grab the 1.4 BRANCH (tag missing from their CVS tag page!), which _should_ be nearly identical to the RC, possibly with more bug fixes depending on when you check it out.
BTW, why is the parent modded "Redundant"? It is on-topic and (s)he was the first to mention this in this discussion.
Moderators, be aware, you will receive the smackdown in meta-moderation.
KDE and GNOME make use of old innovations that have been left by the wayside by the likes of MS and Apple.
There are so many minor ways in which Linux and KDE and GNOME let you customize your desktop for efficient use.
In my case I simply cannot work effectively without the following:
1. multiple desktop spaces - when things get cluttered that I need to make use of constantly, I put it on my second desktop, and use ctrl+alt+->|
2. alt+left mouse button. i always use this combo to drag windows around. it is 1000%(not exaggerating, 10x) more efficient than trying to grab a small bar at the top of an app
3. customizable dock. OS X has this, kudos. third party software can add this functionality to windows.
4. good terminal + unix tools. there is simply no replacement for a good terminal emulator and unix utilities, GNU tools are even better for me featurewise
5. drop down window list, a la Mac OS
6. browsing huge directories over network shares. OS X is totally fucked in this respect(hopefully the new Finder in Panther fixes this), and windows is not too quick either. there's nothing better than a command line, and Nautilus is about par with iexplorer
7. scripting, on the command line or quick throw away scripts. there are just all these cases where you need to perform a set of complex operations on a certain set of files that simply cannot be done without a little bit of scripting. Perl, bash sed, awk, grep, wc, etc all are your friend. too bad OS X has weird links that can't be accessed through normal APIs, but so far i've not hit a problem with that.
Linux just comes with all this functionality... To each his own.
Ok, but what if you want to copy all files matching the pattern *jewel*.mp3, and all the files are of the form "$track. $artist - $album.mp3" (eg. "1. Audioslave - Audioslave.mp3"), sort them by name/type, and you end up with a dir listing the first track of a zillion albums first.
Maybe it was something more like the above that he was meaning to say and he simply misspoke.

Holy crap, that's not too bad. You know, if Microsoft would do that and not require online registration, I would grab XP for my wife and myself(for gaming).
Blah, screw it. I think my wife wants a Mac anyway.
Ummm... I should ignore you, being an AC and all. Anyway, I hated the music of the 80s, 70s music is before my time. I am 1/4 centuries old, which is really none of your business.
Yeah, sure, whatever. That's your opinion. IMO Audioslave is better than either RATM or Soundgarden used to be. As for the lyrics being cliche, well, I think that's just silly. But, you being a RATM fan, maybe you just want ridiculously juvenile politicing, or perhaps lyrics from Chris Cornell when he was less mature.
Audioslave is a new band; they're not RATM or Soundgarden, maybe you're looking for something that's not there.
Perfect albums(defined as being an album where all the songs are good), IMO anyway:
1. Audioslave - self titled first album - Best new album in a long while, if it's your kind of music and you don't have it, get it.
2. Tool - "Undertow" - Tool's best album, IMO
3. A Perfect Circle - "Mer de Noms"
4. Nothingface - "Violence" - good heavy metal, "Violence" is their best album, I feel their new album is very uninspired(lyrically)
5. Alice in Chains - "Dirt"
6. Metallica - "Ride the Lightning"
And some more stuff that's not really my flavor, but I like and/or the wife likes
7. Sarah McLachlan - "Surfacing"
8. Evanescence - "Fallen" - it's actually quite good, every song is pretty decent
9. Garbage - self titled
And this is getting difficult, so I'll stop.
And BTW, does anyone else think Linkin Park sounds like a boy band trying to play metal?:)
Thank you, that was a very well thought out post. I'll pick up a copy of A.P. to read this summer, although the season makes little difference to me.
I thought Fight Club raised some excellent points regarding rampant consumerism, as I have seen my share of people who's posessions are actually making them less happy, ie. owning them.
Anyway, my compile is finished, back to work... in my 8x8' cubicle:)
I think you are misunderstanding Fight Club. Fight Club is more about consumerism, and how ridiculous it's getting, which is expressed through the main character(who was never given a name, but we'll call him Jack).
At the end of the movie, Jack says to Tyler, "My eyes are open." Ie. He knows what was wrong with himself, but Tyler was going to far.
I don't have a conclusive study I can point you to, but I can tell you that emulating PPC is very difficult to do on Intel hardware(go google), and people are already writing emulators for the PS2, but current processors aren't quite *fast enough.
Of course it's not impossible, but the cost of doing so will remain prohibitive for the time being.
* of course, that was several months ago and there are some new processors out on the market.
Ummm... not a chance at emulating the current crop of consoles anytime soon. No 2GHZ Intel chip has the power to emulate a Cube, and would have a difficult time even handling the PS2 at acceptable speeds. Of course "emulating" the Xbox shouldn't be too hard:)
I recently bought a house, so it seems my non-tech hobby these days is doing home improvements.
I've been working with a lot of wood lately because we're doing a unique rustic design for our living room, and that's been a lot of fun, so we're going to try building some furniture. I don't know why, but my wife is really interested in doing that. Maybe if we get good we can make some extra money doing it.
Other than that I've been eating and sleeping, not much time left for other things.
You're reading things that are not there. I'm not particularly worried about MS, just using them as an example, there are sure to be plenty other companies that will, and do, take code and never contribute back in any way. In a business sense, that could be thought of as bad, and the GPL is a way to prevent that.
What have I said that is not fact?
1. The BSD license allows companies to use code in proprietary products without ever contributing back.
2. The GPL does not allow that. A project, such as ReiserFS, can be GPLed and sold to proprietary vendors at the same time. The proprietary vendor can either purchase it, or use the GPL version and open their own code.
Look, I'm not saying that the BSD license is bad for business, just that the GPL has certain advantages. If your business is based on support, then in that case the license may not make much difference. But as is the case with MySQL and ReiserFS, their businesses may not work if their code was BSD licensed.
PS. I'm getting sick and tired of the "M$ will steal my work" argument that gets thrown around everytime the BSD license is mentioned. It seems to me that MS goes out of its way not to reuse existing open source code (resulting in mediocre products). I understand that you want to use the bogeyman of the open source community for an easy ad hominem attack, but its really not much better than those Hitler references that supposedly end a Usenet thread. FUD is easy, insightful comments are challenging. I dare you;)
Oh please! What kind of garbage is this? I was taking you seriously until this last paragraph.
I did not resort to ad hominem attack; Microsoft has stated several times that they prefer the BSD license because they can use your code, whereas with the GPL they can't. In a business case, why would I want to have a one way street flowing towards my competitors?
BTW, I was not attacking the BSD license. I have no problem with it at all and have contributed BSD code and have released work under similar licenses, but I was making a case for business.
Granted, there has been excellent collaboration with projects like Apache, and that's great. I'm not telling you to use the GPL, just pointing out that it allows for doing business in ways the BSD license can't. Use what you like.
Ok, this is getting frustrating. I need the source to build a custom GTK2 + XFT + $version_glibc_i_have build. But where is the source for 1.4rc2? It's not on the ftp site. I know it sometimes takes a while, but the source for rc1 isn't there either.
So I decided I'd try to get it with CVS, but they don't say what the release tag is for 1.4rc2.
Exactly! Despite the claims made by self-loving people like Bill Gates, the GPL is actually better for business than the BSD license. The GPL actually allows the author of the work more freedom to make money as (s)he sees fit. With the BSD license, everyone just "steals" it and never contributes anything back.
Microsoft et al just want a "free lunch". Well they can eat @$#%; if they don't want to share their work freely then they will damn well pay for my work if they want to use it. The GPL ensures that.
At the same time, anything licensed under the GPL can be freely looked at and reimplemented, so innovation isn't bottled up and kept secret à la proprietary software.
Yeah yeah yeah, I am so fucking sick of people blathering about the prisoners being held in Guantanamo. Get a fucking clue about what's going on there first at least.
I recently spoke to a congressman's chief of staff who had just visited Guantanamo because said congressman was concerned about the situation there. After his visit he was satisfied.
The people being held there were members of Al Queda. Information they have obtained from the prisoners confirms this. They are not being tortured or held in poor conditions. There are people there observing the goings on all the time, so it would be difficult to perform any torture. In fact, their conditions are better than most prisons, and definately better than prisons in places other than USA and Europe.
Interrogations are done simply; prisoners are rewarded when they give information, otherwise they sit and do nothing for a full 24 hours. Several have not spoken since being detained there.
Yes, if you are an immigrant you will likely be held unfairly for a longer period of time than is acceptable; that is true. But to compare US policy regarding terror suspects to China is ludicrous.
The USA is far from being above criticism, but the comparisons some people make are simply insulting to those in truly dire situations.

Right, but he said it was "big free". Does he mean it's not as big and bloated as Mozilla?
I wonder if that was a Freudian slip, or just a typo :)

IANAL, but no, probably not. But any trade secret claims they have that are in that code would be void I think.
