A friend told me of a good solution they had come up with. The important passwords were written down and stored in the company's safe-deposit box at the bank. The bookkeeper made daily bank runs so asking her to replace the list with updated ones each time they were changed was not a problem.
Scratch that, they have a summary of LGPL(http://creativecommons.org/licenses/LGPL/2.1/) and GPL2(http://creativecommons.org/licenses/GPL/2.0/) but not GPL3.
The Human Readable summary that Creative commons gives is fantastic. This is what GPL/LGPL is missing. I've been working with and creating open source software and even I don't understand GPL or LGPL very well.
I installed Ubuntu 8.10 from within WinXP. I put it in the 'hidden' recovery partition on my Acer laptop. Well, it started off absolutely great with a menu on boot to pick which one I wanted. Loved it.
But after the first round of system updates I got a problem with
but there has been no solution. I suspect the filesystem/formatting is the issue. I wonder if I'd have better luck formatting and installing Ubuntu from scratch- but I'm not willing to nuke my XP install.
And THATs why many of us who WANT to use Linux haven't switched yet. It's still got kinks.
I don't understand the state that our society is in. Someone does something illegal and it's the fault of the medium in which they perform that illegal act? Bit Torrent, Craigslist, etc. And yet who is asking the gun companies to watch who gets access to their guns, or the auto makers to watch who is driving their cars? It's a complete shut-off of the brains of the people levelling these complaints.
I was driving in the US yesterday and saw a billboard for a Toyota something, which advertised 50mpg. So... it looks like this isn't some sort of industry busting impossible target. This is great news.
I prefer FF because of all it's great addons but, generally it's been getting slower and slower. But then so has my whole machine and I doubt FF is the sole cause of that. I have 5 simple tabs open and FF (latest version) is hogging memory at 197,000K It's second in task man right after Visual Studio at 206,000K.
Ug. One of these days I should find out which addons are contributing most to this glut.
Why does Google Squared sound like it's going to be aggregating everyone's webpage content much like Google News aggregates news articles?
How happy are website owners going to be when people can learn the facts they want without even going to the site at all? If Google thinks they have a problem with angry news websites... wait'll they start doing this to everyone... or maybe I'm not understanding this feature.
I disagree. I have my own small business and I'm starting it slow and small from my home. I don't have a start-up loan. I put my profits in the bank and operated my business from my cash reserve.
Seeing as my cash is earning interest for me, rather than debt on which you have to pay interest, I say that's the cheapest way to run a company. It just doesn't have the quick, instant growth you might get with borrowing a sum of money. But there's something to be said for slow and steady.
Ahh! Cool. Thank you for the explanation. I might be tempted for one of these- god knows I hate booting up my PC just to grab the movie showtimes. But without an optical drive, how does one format and reinstall the OS in the event of a problem?
Strange comment. So real adults do nothing with their spare time that is not completely pure and in no way unsavory? Does that include adults who like to tackle eachother in football games, take martial arts lessons, watch horror movies or read trashy novels?
Last time I checked, I'm a real adult who does a lot of worthwhile things with my time, including reading and learning about intellectually meaningful things. But I also like to blast away at video game mutants once in a while. I don't think it makes me less of an adult, or unsavory in any way, thank you very much.
Can someone kindly explain to me the difference between a netbook and a laptop? Granted I haven't been computer shopping in a while, but suddenly everyone is talking about 'netbooks' like they are some great new thing? Is it just a smaller laptop?
I don't understand why they don't grab Hubble and attach it to the International Space Station? It seems a waste to eventually let a great piece of equipment, into which so much money has been invested, to eventually just drift off into space/crash to earth. Servicing it would be much easier if it was attached to the ISS and we could continue getting stunning images, which I think goes a long way to creating interest in astronomy.

Well, if that's the case, you can always go to your local PC shop and have them custom build one for you. OEM isn't the only choice out there.
I'm also interested in the answer to this...

Wow. and I just found that they provide a summary of GPL and LGPL. Fantastic. I love how I found that AFTER posting on /. Doh!

I wonder if anyone will catch your Eightfold Path reference. Great post.
Wow. Sorry for the grammar errors in that post! Doh.

It died because they moved it to Friday night. That's when I stopped watching.
And because it became more about angst than sci-fi.

Why the panic. They don't make money off of IE anyway. *confused*

Yes, you can grow faster, but that's not always stable or able to weather harsh economic times. Not all large companies maintain long-term debt:

Granted it's an old article...
Here's a more recent one: http://www.fool.com/investing/general/2008/01/28/5-debt-free-stocks.aspx
Not all companies go into debt. See the list on this article: http://www.usatoday.com/money/perfi/columnist/krantz/2007-03-20-debt-free_N.htm

God, and I thought finding evidence of a few bed bugs in my apartment was bad. Suddenly I don't feel quite so freaked out.
My host just made PHP5 the default starting this year. So 5 is still new to me.
