Canada has 28 million users, over 80% of the population(wikipedia). Also, it doesn't get divided amoungst everyone evenly, last time I checked you get "popularity credits" and based on the amount of credits, you get a higher percentage.
Anyways, this is the exact reason why I didn't sign up to SOCAN, I had a gut feeling they'd end up being some type of "voice" for all the songwriters, when really they should just act as the hub for collecting the royalties and getting them to me.
Even if I was signed up to SOCAN, how would they decide how many credits I'd get. From proven downloads? That'd be great cause I've had over 820,000 downloaded. But that wouldn't work because then it'd dilute the big winners, they wouldn't like that. What if my music was for free(because it is)? Would I still get credits?
First the UBB and now this... geesh.
Not all canadian artists are disgruntled and thinking they are "owed" something and feel the need to enforce a tax.
With that said, feel free to download my music from my site pronobozo.com, maybe it'll help calm the nerves a little.
The "performance package" is $31 a month and you only get 25 gigs of transfer. You are paying over a dollar per gig of content viewed. Damn that is expensive.
I bought a season of enterprise(I had a star trek craving, don't judge), 30gig download from iTunes. I used my entire month in one day.
Mesh wifi cached internet/bbs, anyone?
I sell about 900 tracks a month. It's not much but it's a nice little bonus check and I am sure it'll grow over time. The value of that money has a lot more meaning to me and I like putting it back into the system of artists, hackerspaces, friends.
I am not NIN. Unfortunatly for me I will never have millions in paid promotion and currently I soley rely on my music being put in youtube videos, podcasts, and tv shows. Search pronobozo on youtube and sort by views, those are the things that have helped me.
I am big on the theme "I like to do it because it's fun" and if it ever became to much like a business for me, i probably wouldn't do it. I share music and it lets me meet more people, more communities, and gets me out to more events.
This is along my train of thought.
I think people should stop complaining about copyright and start taking action and put their own works under creative commons. It's a free world, if someone wants to restrict their work, they should have the right. If you don't like their system, start creating things and put it under some type of free license. We can live in a world where both systems exists and guess what, it already does! If enough people support it, it'll drown out your hated restricted content.
Heck, all my work is under a reasonable CC license and it has only ever benefited me. I've had more than 500,000 free downloads, and amazingly, it hasn't made my life worse or destroyed the planet:-)
Lock and load, I'm bout to explode
Dead up your whole team 'fore I need to reload
Skills so ill you'd think I was in God mode
Make you scream "Yo, he be using a cheat code!"
But nah, I'm so good ain't no need to hack, son
I got the game that you seem to lack, son
Don't even try to repel my attack, son
Last thing you'll see when the screen fades to black
Is me, I'm elite, yeah I run the system
Kill a boy dead, yo I never miss em
Put on my headset so I can dis em
Trash talk a bitch when my bullets kiss em
Shot to the head, yeah newb you got dead
Submachine gun, fill you full of lead
Blow a whole clip and you dun got bled
I'ma pierce your plate and paint the town red
Ain't no stoppin' my killing spree.
Ain't no toppin' my BFG
Cause I'm in stealth mode no you can't see me
But I got you in my sights and I won't kill you softly
Pistol whip you, yeah I'ma crip you
Crush you like a bug when my death grip grips you
Make you say wha!? with my online kung fu
And give you a display of mad skills to trip to
When I grab a controller, I'm bad to the bone
I'll take on your whole damn squad alone
You ain't at my level, you ain't in my zone
Punk assed bitch, You just got owned
This is similar to an early security flaw in windows though I forget precisely which Windows versions it was, 95 and earlier I suspect. It was possible to write a program that would autorun from an inserted CD and copy the screen saver password file to a floppy from where it could be later cracked at leisure.
I had that one, but what it did was autorun a program that disabled the screensaver.
If you want to try and succeed on the net, you have to get hits, lots of hits, more hits than you could probably get. For every million, there 100,000 that'll like your style, 50,000 that'll visit your site twice, 10,000 that'll be a fan, 1,000 that'll buy a cd.
Get hits is key, use internet as your main tool, everything else is too expensive. Find the indie radio stations, sites, genre related communities.
It's your only tool but the best tool. You can get thousands of people hearing your music everyday, something you can't do very well with other methods.
Stick in the game for a long time, let your name build.
There isn't much more to it.
yes sell mp3s,cds,shirts whatever you can. If you are trying to make a living, then damn, you need more ways to make the money.
What happens if the cost of each almost-continuous call is incremental?
Say the first 10 VOIP calls are free, and if you make the 11th call within 5 minutes of the 10th call, you pay 1 cent, and if you make your 12th call within 5 minutes of your 11th call, you pay 2 cents, then 4 cents, 8 cents and so on.
Private callers shouldn't have to pay anything due to the engaging nature of personal calls.
Businesses will have to register to get exemption from the charges, thus easily identifiable.
Like spam filters, this won't stop spammers from spamming, but hopefully it's enough to make it less profitable.
We didn't see email spams coming, but we should definitely do something on VOIP when we have the opportunity.
You could just rotate accounts:-)
For someone that is coming from the bottom up, i can say that time is the key. Without millions of dollars to spend on promotion, independant artists have to find a different way to communicate with the masses.
Internet is their greatest tool, so with a bit of time and dedication you can reach millions of people from the comforts of your own home.
I don't think it's about the music industry now, it's about the new uprising of artists taking a step on freely distributed music. The RIAA has their game, but we have ours too.
Instead of changing them, lets just use our own method.
Pretend you have a device that when you pass through a validation point, it checks a univeral database for your password, validates it, then copies a new password to your device. If your password doesn't work at the next validation point then that means someone has stolen your password.
A validation point would be locking your home, starting your car, logging into your computer, things that are intertwined with daily life. This shortens the amount of time to discover a stolen password(key).
Credit card companies wouldn't need to have algorithms detecting(guessing) purchasing patterns and spending usages. This system would be very straight forward and ultimatly effective.
When someone has stolen a password(key), the next time the victim passes through a validation point, which could be moments or minutes away, it would be rendered useless to the criminal, because the user would be assigned a new password(key).
If a criminal were to try to use the password instantly, the next time a user would pass through a validation point their password would fail alerting the system. Same day detection.
Although with an encrypted password, the criminal would not have enough time to crack the password by the time the user passes through the next validation point, which would be in the same day.
A validation point could be just a simple password change from the universal database from an access point used in daily life. It doesn't mean that you are restricted from using a device, like starting a car or locking your home(if the password failed), it is simply a way to keep the password dynamic making it constantly secure. Only when it was used to make a purchase and then failed would it restrict use.
Well he doesn't have to program, maybe he can help out with project management, maybe look after a messageboard, maybe give some music, integrate whatever skill they have avaiblable.
Maybe stop complaining and try to do something about it
Become part of the project.
Whining all the time will get people down on a project they have spent lto of time on.
So how about you go to them and say, "This program is great, be here are a couple things that I think should change and this is how I can help."

I've played a lot of mario brothers, but I don't go around punching brick walls.
I think when a computer is connected to the internet, productivity nose dives.
Doesn't say in the article how they knew but I do know that in some instances, they track the layers in ice/snow from each years snow fall.
They can find out a lot of information because water and pollutants can travel all around the world and deposit in them.
I've also read about microbes being able to do the same thing.
As for this instance... well... google it.
remember my 16 mb TNT???

I dropped an entire glass of coke into my computer. I just let it dry because I couldn't be bothered to clean it up...
My computer had actually survived after booting it up a few hours later.
The dust did seem to collect at an alarming rate after that though.
