I have done some work with a clinical psychologist who specializes in treating kids with ADHD. He uses a few very simple computer games that are controlled with EEG Biofeedback. One of the games is a simplified pac-man game. When the user is well focused and their brainwaves are in the Beta (12-30 Hz) the pac-man stays bright yellow and moves automatically through a maze. If they start to drift off then the pac-man fades to brown and slows down. If they totally zone out into la-la-land then the pac-man goes black and stops. The game is boring enough that it is difficult for them to keep focus, but the feedback is fast enough so that they can consciously identify when they begin to lose focus.

Modern Hard Drive motors are not steppers, although they do work in a similar way. Driving them is a more complex than driving a servo. Here's a good article of what's required: http://letsmakerobots.com
My 6 week old son was frozen for a few months as a part of an IVF cycle. Admitadly, he was only a blastocyst (about 100 cells) at the time, but he's very much alive now.
Could a physics simulator that encoded every atom in a person be regarded as producing consciousness?
If so, then A Bunch of Rocks could also be said to produce consciousness...
Have a look at
edna .
From the about page: edna is a network of the education and training community. It includes government and non-government schooling systems, early childhood, vocational and technical education, adult and community education and higher education.
Might be close to what you're after...
"The further you go into the whirlpool, the faster you rotate."
I wonder if it would be an efficient way to turn normal wave motion into rotation to drive a turbine..?
I haven't tried it but aiotrade is an open source (gpl) stock technical analysis application based on the Netbeans platform. Anyone had any joy with it?
When we were looking for a Linux admin we set up a a mirror of our production server in our machine room.
We then got one of our admins to simulate someone successfully hacking into it and gaining root privileges.
About 10 minutes into the interview we had someone interrupt and tell the CTO that our production servers had been compromised.
The interview was stopped and the CTO rushed off. After about 2 minutes of sitting alone in a small room the interviewee was invited to come and have a look.
Not only is it a great way to find out how well a person can think under pressure, their reaction when they found out that it was only a test gave us a good idea of how they would fit in with the organizational culture.
You know those small retail shops that don't really have many customers. The ones where the attendant just sits there for 90% of the day with a bored look on their face.
I've often thought about getting a job in a store like that and spending my idle time writing software...
It's a thought I have every time I see a bored retail worker sitting on their butt waiting for the next customer.
I have found wi-fi spray to be quite effective.

Security must be world-class.

I'm not sure how fast the driver board can update the LED's but you might be able to make a cool POV display out of it...

From TFA: "The soul is a synonym for consciousness"
"insert random pissant town 1000+ kilometres from anywhere even remotely civilised".
Actually, anywhere that's not Brisbane, Sydney or Melbourne... or was that your point?
Perhaps its already happening and no one remembers?

Hope not, cos that'll mean I've somehow been drafted into the US Army and I'm not an American!!

Probably not... it is bad luck to believe in superstition.
I love the idea of open source hardware!! Does anyone know of other open source hardware projects that are worth looking into?
Have a look at NVIDIA's CUDA for an example of General Purpose GPU processing.
Some interesting GPU projects here: Nvidia Cuda
