    For every wonderful thing mankind dreams up to make lives better, three more abuse it.

    That's what I can't understand about these types of reviews. So what if one drive can write faster than any other if I lose the data a couple years before the other drives' outputs. Maybe people who back up data constantly for a living might be concerned with the speed, but for my money, I'll burn as slow as needed to achieve a consistantly readable disk.

    This review would be much more interesting if they showed some quality data with each burner.

    I definately agree. Even both are text editors, they serve very different purposes. On one side, you have the quick and dirty editor that is very effective for a few changes (even if it's for the entire document), and on the other hand, you have the larger, more complete (imo) full featured editor for larger tasks.

    But then again, I think /. just likes flamewars.

    Actually, I tell my friends and familily this all the time when they ask me how to keep from getting the nasties on their computers. The safest way to browse the internet? Unplug the ethernet cable or phone line. The most sure fire way to not get a computer virus? Turn the computer off.

    That's about when they ask me for browsing tips with a reasonable risk.

    For those with XP (and something similar works for 2k)

    Disabling AutoPlay

    I find it best to disable CD or DVD autoplay in XP using either local group policy or, for an enterprise, an Active Directory group policy.

    The local group policy editor method:

                    * Click Start
                    * Click Run
                    * Enter GPEDIT.MSC
                            Group Policy mmc will popup. On left panel:
                    * Double-click Computer Configuration to open submenu
                    * Double-click Administrative Templates to open submenu
                    * Double-click System to open submenu
                    * Double-click Turn autoplay off option which will be near the bottom of the list in the right panel.

    The default is the Not configured . Set it to Enabled.

    This will still allow Windows to regonize when new media is inserted and any icons will appear/update or whatever. You can still right click and choose autoplay, but no CDs or DVDs will autoplay upon insertion. You can also change the setting to do the same with all inserted drives to stop autoplay for usb drives and the like.

    Having interned at such a place, the frequent flyers do have the cards that someone else has already mentioned that identify them as people who are likely to have residue on them. When I had to fly home in the middle of the summer, they told me to make sure I always wore my lab coat and then changed my shoes and washed my hair after work before I got on the plane.

    The legit people who have to worry about this already have to worry about this and the appropriate measures are in place.

    Okay. What's the maximum number of good guys checking open source code? Who knows, but potentially a lot. What's the maximum number of good guys checking MS code? Just the employees.

    What's the maximum number of bad guys looking at either code? Once again, probably a lot. Keep in mind many exploitable bugs are not found by looking at the code.

    So I would say open source has a better chance of finding those mistakes before the bad guys do.
