Unless I am confused, VNC does not and never did base itself off of an X server. Yes - there is an X11 to--to VNC server, but thats about it. All the other servers (for other platforms) hook into whatever windowing system used.

Nowadays when people say VNC, they instantly think to one of the software flavors implementing the RFB protocol. Originally AT&T made the whole cute thing for... you guessed it.... thin clients with the whole protocol processed in hardware.

You do bring up a VERY valid point. BUT - AtheOS has been around for a while as well as its successor Syllable, and all I see is progress, progress, progress.

These folks do seem to want to make a full-fledged, USEFUL OS - not just a pet project.

On the other hand - there is me - who is making a microkernel as a pet project to learn more about osdev and low-lever programming. Doesn't have a flashy website though... only the basic SF site.

Syllable has been intriguing me for a while now. I just might make a go for it.

About the Africa AIDS victim thing...

Seriously everyone, get real - if those people don't want to help themselves, it doesn't matter how many philanthropists throw billions in food, medical, educational and technological help.

Look at Africa - its a humanitarian disaster. South Africa - Highest crime rate in the world. Zimbabwe, Sudan and many others no one ever hears about - ethnic persecution, humanitarian disasters, hate crimes, cannibalism, rape. Many do-gooders feel some craving to go over there and "do humanity some good", only to be assaulted, raped and horribly murdered. Is AIDS in Africa the result of the rest of the world not pouring enough cash into this /dev/null? I don't think so.

Hell, pour all of that money into something more tangible, like cancer/AIDS research or space exploration. The Earth is starting to overpopulate and the human race needs more space. Lets conquer the unknown!
