  1. i like my gaming mini-keyboard on Gaming Gear Showdown, Simplicity vs. Hype · · Score: 1

not a mouse, but i'll put out there that i'm enjoying the ideazon fang gaming keyboard i got a few months ago.

i happened by it when looking for a usb keyboard after i decided i just cannot crouch, strafe diagonally, and change weapons at the same time with my wireless keyboard. i now use that + a usb extender on my living-room set-up (plus the extender enabled a wired mouse and microphone to be near me again too, while still stashing under the couch nicely)

i like that it reaches for ergonomics and don't-have-to-look-at-the-keys-ability while generally maintaining the standard keyboard layout and adding symmetry for leftys/righties. i still like having a full keyboard at-ready for textual-chat or whatnot, but alternatively the makers also have other keyboards whereby you can swap out sections of with specialized sections which can match what the fang provides.

i concur 100% with what i read in tfa. i basically don't play much anymore where my opponent isn't face to face. beyond what it said, i'll add i have an aversion to the statistical-based dnd-dice system that's the foundation of them all. i prefer skill over statistics. i'm waiting for the technology to support a combat system something akin to an arcade fighter like street fighter or mortal kombat. they've already approached it with simpler button-patterns, but not the intricacies, balance, and thematic move-schemes of a fighter.

i could envision one set in feudal china with competing schools of kungfu, where one must choose and train moves from a vast selection.. perhaps the number of assignable moves could be a levelable benefit.. but a skilled player on a new character should still be able to chop down a n00b on a souped up character. it'd be a sweet accomplishment no doubt; most 3d fighters are still largely planar with minimal exceptions. soul calibur's move-scheme-duality of horiz and vertical attacks would translate well, but truly multiplayer 3dimensional combat on a balanced combat system is still a daunting prospect. good hit detection + bandwidth + distributed coordination = not there yet. /anyone remember dragon force? that was the last rpgish game i remember liking... damn cliffhangers keep you playing on

  9. what's your true goal? on Would a CS Degree Be Good for Someone Over 30? · · Score: 4, Insightful

i can't tell whether you're looking to use a degree to advance your career or not. on one hand you say you've not needed it so far, and on the other you say you think it might open doors. it doesn't sound like you have a specific goal for which a CS degree is a requirement, so lacking that, I'd say don't get an inferiority complex.

ask yourself, "do i enjoy dealing in underlying academic theories, or do i prefer concrete applications to real problems?". if you're tired of dealing in the latter, intellectually curious about the former, or want to gain some specific skills, go for it. if, however, you're just having a vague feeling of "missing out", i'd say don't. degrees are best attained with a purpose in mind, and it sounds like you're doing fine as-is.

if you're still not sure, why not try to find an appropriate class to take without committing everything, as a test of your own enjoyment/committal.

as someone who did the opposite and started with much schooling and less practical experience, i'll tell you i look over the fence at your green grass now and then too. i don't utilize the theory i've learned nearly as much as the more practical knowledge. the rare circumstances i do utilize the theoretical learning are fulfilling tho.

GITS as y'all likely know, was originally a manga by Masamune Shirow. The movies and (I beleive) the TV series are by Mamoru Oshii.

There's a lot to say, but trying not to repeat what you can just websearch for yourselves, the TV series is more of a drama, focusing on character interactions; the book is more a geeky indulgence in dreaming the extentions of future technology, eastern philosophy, and impossibly spankalicious babes.

Which is why I mention the REAL GITS2. the second movie was Oshii's extention of his first movie. the manga GITS2 is much more the sequel I hoped for, getting far deeper into the philosophy and revealing the main character's metaphorical parallelling the japanese creation myths most especially involving the jewel, the sword, and the mirror.
