the lines and equipment all come from Time Warner--even my bill is printed on Time Warner paper and I make my cheque out to "Time Warner"...
Does this mean my option to use anyone but Time Warner as a cable ISP will vanish?
we don't usually find them unless we physically stumble across them or unless the DHCP server in the device is handing out address on the LAN at the site and therefore breaking connectivity for the users
Here's an idea: implement a wireless sniffer of your own.
I'm not trying to troll here; I work in IT, too. This kind of thing can be a real pain. But using the above as an excuse for such a serious security risk is a little silly.
Essentially, a TCPA compatible computer will refuse to run all code which hasn't been pre-approved by some "trusted" organisation. This would make not-for-profit software development almost impossible.
Supposedly the consumer will have some control over what is "trusted" or not. You can read more about this at the TCG website.
I think most people are "scared off" because they don't have the 4 GHz computer with a gig of RAM required to compile the entire system under a couple days
This is just as bad as the intro. I run Gentoo, and compiling most apps is very reasonable. There are a few packages that DO take a LONG time (KDE and OpenOffice.org are commonly the worst offenders). However, for somebody who runs a light desktop like I do (Fluxbox) it's perfectly fine. Additionally, many packages are available in precompiled binary packages to speed this process up. I know a few people that compile everything except OO.o, for example.
I've been using v7 for about a month (unofficial "beta" version). It works fine with my scroll wheel and is done mostly in GTK+2.
This is actually a very useable PDF viewer. I've never been fully comfortable in Acroread 5, XPDF or GSview, and I don't like the pile of dependencies on GPDF and KPDF.
For me, Acroread 7 is the way to go. It'd be nice if it was open, but sometimes we just don't have that luxury...
That might be a legitimate worry. I saw a leaked pic that shows a blurry figure approaching from behind... the damn thing had three green glowing eyes!
True, but the story is about using Linux in the film, which is credited to Rodriguez. I think saying "Rodriguez's Sin City" in this context is perfectly fine.
MS should just create their own Linux and make it as insecure as they want. Then their claims that "Windows is more secure than one Linux" might actually be true;)
...once it's broken, you don't have many options for a new 'password'.
I don't think so.
The phone companies want phones that have these services so that they can CHARGE FOR THEM ALL SEPARATELY!
WTF?
Also check out the linux mirror project.
half of the top russian sites went down, including www.mail.ru, www.rambler.ru, www.lenta.ru, some of them haven't been brought up yet
Oh, this'll help them...
This type of service has been available in Canada from Fido for some time now.

Might be partly because the costumes and props were mostly done by WETA, the same company that did them for LOTR.
I can't remember the exact percentages, but I've read that a very large proportion of people and businesses are still using Win98.
Maybe that's because so few people Fields that they are Abel to win one of these...
(I'm VERY, VERY SORRY!!)

Just my $0.02.
For the record, Fire Fox is another name for the Red Panda. Yes, they do actually exist.
Once Bastille for OSX becomes completely point and click it will take off like Jean Valjean after stealing a loaf of bread.
I think they're planning on getting that up and running by 24/6/01.
It's nowhere near as powerful (yet), but try out Nvu. It's meant to be a Dreamweaver clone, and it's pretty decent.
I'm proud to be Canadian, and this would be kinda cool. I just hope that we don't start backing every stupid idea that comes out of the francise...

every machine that passes through my domain is converted to FireFox
Nice! How'd you manage that, some funky new ActiveX control?

How old is this news? This was announced months ago, and I've been running v7 on my Gentoo box for two weeks...
