Seriously, read some of the information about Horizons from the pre-blackout era if you can find it. You'll salivate, and wonder what the fuck happened, and why nobody is doing it today.

Actually, If you followed Vanguard throught it's development you'd have at least part of the answer to your question. So much of what was being pitched sounded so much like early Horizons. Right down to each races putting down their diferences to fight an encroaching army of undead, and regrouping in a rebuilt capital of New Tazoon, err New Targanor. The probelm is, pre-blackout Horizons was incredibly huge in scope. There is no way without major backing they could have got it out. Vanguard had the backing and one of the biggest names in the industry behind it, but they ran out of money twice: once when Microsoft let them go, and once again last month when SoE pulled the plug on Beta funding. That's the problem with creating huge and innovative MMO's they require so much development time and resources. Heck, the only truly polished MMO at launch was WoW and that's because it is a relatively small world and a simple rehash of what had gone before. Even then it still spent ages in development.

The fact is the world runs on the grumbles and fumes of players living in their parents' basements. When will the world wake up and realize that Sony is quickly cornering this market. Soon we will all be forced to play unfinished games and gripe and moan about it. It will be our duty, it will be the law, the world would end if we didn't.

What? Do you think that the nation that claims to be the world leader in human Rights actually has to respect them? Why should they? I mean, these guys in Guantanamo aren't Americans, they don't respect human Rights, therefore they aren't entitled to have their Rights respected either. In fact, since they're not American, I'm not sure they're actually human either.

At least I think that's the moral of the story here. I could be wrong. It could be that I'm not even human.

I believe the general theory is that generating pigmentation has a certain cost to it, however small; therefore, over time, and in a lightless environment where they convey absolutely no benefit, the genes devoted to wasting that part of the organisms time and energy are either shut off or put to better use.

I could be wrong though, it could really be about the guy who designed them couldn't be bothered to finish the job so swept them under the proverbial rug. Which would also explain why so many caves have things that haven't been colored in, are missing eyes, etc.

    1) They have a character in the game, and want to make it more fun for them

Um, would you rather they made it so that the game were boring for them to play? Like it or not devs arent empaths, they have to base a lot of their judgement of what is fun based on personal experience.

    2) General fear of having their wishes proven unsound

Well, most people suffer this to some degree or another. How large a role does it play? I would say less than the average MMORPG board poster wants to lay at their feet.

    3) God syndrome, where they feel it's their divine duty to punish and reward specific players/groups at will

Yep, it's personal. They'll single out individual players and change an entire system just to ruin their fun. That's why it's best to lie on surveys about what you like in a game. Because you just know that they might pick you next and remove everything you said you liked.

    4) Inability to throw away any amount of work spend brainstorming/coding changes, even when they're dumb ideas

Isn't that exactly what the NGE is all about? Throwing out years of code filled with dumb ideas?

Why does it have to be an us vs them conspiracy? Why can't game developers suffer from the same problems of other software developers? You know, like : poor management; ill defined goals;underfunding; sloppy practices; and wasting all their time on the internet instead of coding?
