  1. I am the boss! on Mark Cuban Declares War on GooTube · · Score: 4, Interesting

Jeez, Mark Cuban is a whiney little brat (or substitute your own word that begins with a B here). You guys need to learn that just because you have all the money you don't get to make all of the rules. Most of them, sure, but not all. Go to news.google.com and search for Mark Cuban and see for yourself...

  2. bittorrent to the rescue again? on Vista to Allow "One Significant" Hardware Upgrade · · Score: 1

Looks like it will once again be bittorrent to the rescue for another of my legitimate copies of Windows. I have a copy of Win XP home sitting in my desk drawer that was supplanted by a bootlegged copy because I got sick of calling customer support in India to get it reactivated everytime my computer crashed and had to be rebuilt. To their credit I never had a problem getting it reaauthorized but getting it reauthorized was the problem.

  3. Google wikipedia on Google or Wikipedia - Which is Your First Stop? · · Score: 1

I never think of actually going to wikipedia first but it seems that the wikipedia entry for almost everything that I search for seems to be popping up first on google's list as time goes by.

  4. this VISTA thing is costing more people than MS! on How Much Does a Vista Upgrade Cost? · · Score: 1

How much is this Vista upgrade costing computer manufacturers? I have been putting off a new computer purchase for literally YEARS because I don't want to have to cough up $100 (or more) for the next version of the OS.

  6. sony should sue sony for selling blank media on Lik-Sang Is Out Of Business · · Score: 1

I always find it funny that a corporation like Sony can go ahead and sue someone like Lik-Sang because the stuff that Lik-Sang sells can be (and is) used for pirating yet the Sony's of the world continue to sell blank media that can be (and is) used for pirating.

  7. makes more sense to me actually on PlayStation 3 Delayed, Over $800? · · Score: 1

The PS3 is going to have a blu-ray drive and the rumored pricing/release dates that I have been hearing for a while have been somewhat confusing in that Blu-Ray players that are going to be released this year are expected to cost $1000. How can Sony sell a PS3 for $400 or so when everyone else is getting $1000. By waiting a year I can much more easily see them selling the PS3 for $300-$400 as the Blu-Ray drive prices come down.

  9. finally! on MGM v. Grokster Date Set · · Score: 1

Mark my words: There is absolutely NO way that the supreme court will rule against Grokster. Think of the implications if they are found liable for the way people USE their product - gun manufacturers, alcohol manufacturers, auto manufacturers, tobacco companies (oh wait!), etc. A pro MGM ruling is, in effect, telling ALL companies that they are liable for the way consumers use their products.

  10. Re:So it goes... on Has TiVo's Fate Been Sealed? · · Score: 1

How much do you really think it costs to compile show information and send it out every couple of days? Not $13 per person (in bulk)! They backended the hardware cost and were hoping to recoup it that way and this profit model just isn't working for them. Why? Most people don't want to pay $13 per month for tv listings no matter what you tell them.

  11. Re:turning off customers... on Valve Bans Another 30,000 Steam Users · · Score: 1

Yep! I won't buy it because of this protection scheme. I understand their motives but they don't fit in with my motives. What if I want to pull it off the shelf and play it in ten years (as I will probably do with my copy of Half-Life)? What if I want to sell it on EBAY? What if I want to put it on my wife's laptop and play it on the airplane while the original copy sits on my computer at home with nobody playing it? Come on people, I know that you really really want to use this stuff but just say no to these draconian restrictions of fair-use or it is only going to get worse!

  12. Re:Maybe... on MPAA Goes After More Bittorrent Site Operators · · Score: 1

It still won't work. It might make it harder to stop certain torrent traffic but they can always go after the end-users who are trafficking in the copyrighted material (as the RIAA is now doing).

  13. Re:Hack the Force on MPAA Goes After More Bittorrent Site Operators · · Score: 1

The RIAA and MPAA will eventually win and they should as long as they limit their efforts to preserve THEIR content. They could easily go after individual torrent users (or any other P2P network) because people will probabably always need to make their IP addresses available and the courts are probably going to continually rule that they have this right to discover the users behind the IP addresses.

  14. Calling a game a classic before it comes out... on Halo 2 Available on the Net · · Score: 1

Rather, they will buy legit copies of Halo 2, and pay the developers the respect, and money, that they deserve for producing such an awesome game. People who steal from Bungie are not true Halo fans. Hmm... it is usually scary when the pre-release hype for a game is so much that people are calling it a classic before they have even played it. This almost always leads to a disspointing experience (see Daikatana, Duke Nukem Forever, etc. for further reference).

  15. Re:Copy-protection on Sony Launches DVD-Burning Appliance · · Score: 1

Right.. Sony sells blank media, cd burners, dvd burners, dvd-r recorders, blank tapes, etc.

Is this a case of the right arm not knowing what the left arm is doing?

How can they bitch about people violating their copyrights and then go on and sell things that allow people to keep violating their copyrights?

  16. why all the hype? on TiVo and Netflix Hook Up · · Score: 1

The amount of press that this thing is receiving is ridiculous! How much are they going to charge per movie? And it will surely be DRM'd all to hell and expire in a short amount of time.

ISP's are gonna bitch more than anyone else if downloading DVD sized movies takes off. My ISP (cable) is already throttling those they believe to be 'excessive' downloaders (1 hour of excessive downloading gets you two hours of slower than normal downloading). Other ISP's have been known to drop clients for 'downloading too much.'

  17. Re:``Is it legal?`` on More on the Portable Media Center · · Score: 1

You have neglected to mention the DCMA which makes any form of copying dvd's illegal. A tech sight devoted to the latest gadgets should be well versed in this topic! As for statutory copyright law, it is not as black and white as you make it out to be. I am unaware of any successful prosecution in this matter (not that I claim to be all knowing) and any such case would surely have made big headlines. In fact, it is my understanding that high courts in the US have almost always routinely ruled in favor of the end-user when it comes to fair use rights.
