I hope safe returns in the future aren't news but instead are commonplace. Hopefully NASA's shift in ideology regarding spacecraft design will usher in a new era in incident free missions.
Recycling is a bad example of your argument. The reason most types of recycling exist is because people don't know that it isn't doing any good. Recycling of most things (glass, paper, plastic) is costly, dirty, wasteful work. Ignoring the fact that recycled plastic costs much more than newly manufactured stuff, even after our government subsidies the recycling plants, the process of recycling plastic introduces many chemicals into the environment as or more dangerous than would be had by throwing it away and making a new one. Recycling isn't popular because it isn't useless. It's because people feel good about themselves for doing it.
However, I'm not a stupid user, and I still have issues with malware/virii
I've used several Windows machines for the past 10 years and have never, ever contracted a virus or malicious piece of spyware on my computer. My parents' computer (which takes quite a download beating) has only received one virus which was easily cleaned up. The thing is, I don't go much out of my way to secure anything. I have Symantec Antivirus running all the time and run Adaware once every couple months. If you are really having such a hard time, you may want to more closely examine your use habits.
Amen, brother. I share your feelings about Microsoft and Windows both. I have come to realize through a fair amount of experience with Linux and Mac OSX that each is good at its own thing.
In my take, Linux is good for running a dedicated process. If I were to set up a web/database/mail whatever server, Linux is my first choice. If I want to browse the web and fire up office apps, I would look toward using a Mac. But for workstation-level general computing (for me, video/audio conversions, Photo creation/editing, gaming) Windows it the king. None of these OSes are perfect. I have a lot of trouble memorizing useful shell commands in Linux and that makes daily use a hassle. If I only had a Mac I'd be terribly frustrated by my lack of software options (ok, ok, I'm mostly talking about gaming here). Windows is the target of nearly every attack on the web and requires extra care to use safely.
If people would quit arguing over one general point, namely which OS is "best", we could all realize they are tailored at different uses and get on with our lives.

I have a feeling this next generation will be dubbed generation rental.
I would agree with you (I remember most of the $50-60 SNES games I rented) but with the huge push for online functionality that could ruin the argument. I don't mind spending a bit more on a game if it will stand the test of time with new and exciting content. Even playing against humans keeps most games lively enough. While online functionality doesn't necessarily garauntee that, it does make it an available. Do you think Halo would have been as popular if you couldn't play with others online?
I was talking to a Microsoft GPA rep at the last AMD/MS Tech Tour and even he admitted the activation processs is a huge hassle. But he went on to remind me that every attempt to circumvent the activation is just as illegal as not owning the copy to begin with. I completely agree with you, though. Now that I have a job, my only reasons not to buy and install a retail WinXP is because I go through just as much of a hassle as if I were to pirate it.
Can these tiny guys do HD (or even DVD) decoding? How about Divx? I agree it would be nice to have a super efficient alternative for casual computer use, but you're talking to the/. crowd... we're not (by and large) casual computer users. And for the difference in cost you are talking about (~$10/month) most people would rather avoid the hassle.
So THAT'S how Neo got his powers in the movie. His link to the Matrix was so laggy the agents could never hit him. All the flying and clipping into other people's torsos to pull out bullets. It all makes so much sense now.
Wow the mods today have really gone bonkers. How can you mod the GP as flamebait yet continually mod this reactionist up?
Do you honestly think that an orc hating an elf is going to translate into real world racism? What is your definition of racism anyway?
This all seems like semantics to me. If their planning a beta release ni a month and a half, how were they gonna squeeze 1.1 in anyway? Either way, I'm still waiting for the killer app that makes me want 2 browsers on my machine.
As a distracted youth entering the workplace, I venture to say that I need to surf a bit during the day. I'm not the most focused person, but if I were to develop for 8 hours straight a day, I would certainly lose my mind at a very rapid rate.
Honestly, the two technologies are close enough in features that I would much rather just avoid a format war than have to deal with the bullcrap I put up with to write to a DVD.
I hope safe returns in the future aren't news but instead are commonplace. Hopefully NASA's shift in ideology regarding spacecraft design will usher in a new era in incident free missions.
will this hold up in court? Seriously. Please forward your thoughts to my lawyer ASAP.
At this rate, there will be more MMORPG players than there are humans in no time! Yet more proof of the existence of aliens!
5. Avoid looking at the /. comments about your story as it will likely reduce even the most reasonable and knowledgable person to tears.

Good news for lawyers everywhere!
My friend just took a job there. Priceless!

Tell me about it. I've seen enough Jackie Chan movies to know that the little fucker is constantly looking for a fight no matter what he is doing.

Calm down man. If you can't take the joke, then maybe online gaming isn't for you. Or being on the internet at all.
New "content" is their way of saying new Ferrari.

Don't blame the story posters, blame the idiots who submit these things yet can't spellcheck themselves.
Well of course they're going to say that. Did anyone expect them to say "Ah, yea you got us. We were bullshitting this whole time."?
Honestly, the two technologies are close enough in features that I would much rather just avoid a format war than have to deal with the bullcrap I put up with to write to a DVD.
It's better than a shitty game with bad graphics.
Aparently its fun to code for the PS3, but not as much fun as swearing at people in a /. news story...
