It's still possible to create such fast boot times using ROM. Especially with re-flashable ROM. These sorts of boot times are seen in systems like Game Consoles.

What is discussed on slashdot is actually the tip of the iceberg. These DMCA takedown notices hardly compare to some of the other stuff the church pulls. Forced child labor in the Sea Org, attempts to infiltrate and even overthrow governments, medical neglect of its members, framing critics for bomb threats, the list goes on. I had seen the 6 minute leak of the beginning will before seeing the movie in theatres, but the experience was quite different. Just the size of it was amazing. When the camera tilts out the window to follow the robbers, on the big screen you get a huge sense of vertigo and scale. Not so on the small screen. Even though I had seen that opening many many times before, it was a completely different experience in the theatre.

Likewise, I never knew the joy of Star Wars in the Theatre till the re released it. My father told me about seeing the opening shot where the star destroyer comes right out from overhead being a stunning experience in the theatre. It was. The DVD looks pitiful in comparison.

Even working as an editor, you cut with the theatre in mind. Television uses more closeups because the screen is smaller.

If you want to watch them at home on you 50 inch screen (much much smaller than a 35mm projection) then that's fine, but if you care about movies you should see it in the theatre.

The Ford KA is pretty popular in Europe and get excellent gas milage, but for the model Ford plans to introduce in the states, the gas milage suffers considerably from all the added weight that comes about by adhering to US safety standards. Things like airbags, reinforced frames etc. The current version in Europe cannot be driven in the States legally. I have serious doubts that this car would meet US safety standards and continue to get such good fuel economy.

As a developer, what do you want to do with a game? If your first and foremost goal is to tell a story, then do just that. Use cutscenes or other non interactive elements. Use interactive elements. Use whatever. If it best tells your story, do it. It's a fallacy to think that the story must be interactive. Interactive story presentations and non interactive ones both have strengths and weaknesses. A game that really wants to tell a story will not be afraid to use both where appropriate.

Every person is going to be different, so unless you give your hero a personality which affects the story and is affected by the story, your hero and your story will be boring.
