The bottom line is that humans process some information in a non-representational way, while computers must operate representationally. So even if the computation theory of mind is true, a microchip can't mimick it. Hubert Dreyfus has wrote a great deal on this topic, and provides extremely compelling arguments as to why we'll never have human type AI. Of course, AI can do a lot of "smart" things and be extremely sophisticated, but it will never pass am unrestricted turring test.

  6. Re:Violence on Videogames Doomed for a 'Comics-like Ghetto'? · · Score: 1

You seem to be positing an argument that violence negates art. Not the case. I reference Fight Club, Taxi Driver, Silence of the Lambs and more... all acclaimed movies that use violence/man's inhumanity to man as the central driver for their plots

Violence isn't driving the plot, the internal character struggles are. Violence may be a part of the whole to enhance the theme, but it's not the core of the movie. Violence is the core of many games, as the gameplay portion is what people buy the games for. You play games to PLAY a game, not watch it or hear it or read it.

  7. Violence on Videogames Doomed for a 'Comics-like Ghetto'? · · Score: 2, Insightful

Only if videogames learn to use gameplay mechanisms that don't involve violence. Right now, the majority of videogames are violent, whether that be shooting, punching, or stomping enemies. If the games industry were hollywood, this would belike having 70% of the films be action movies. Of course, 70% of movies are not action movies. Video games need to diversify.

Not everybody is even good at the gameplay mechanisms required. Portal is intellectually challenging with its puzzles, but the coordination required makes it hard for a lot of people to play it. I think adventure games had this right all allong: a simple interface, gameplay that involves puzzle solving and curiosity, and the opportunity to create a good story driven by the player. Instead we have shoot shoot, a cutscene with story here, shoot shoot more shooting.

The original negative is rarely ever touched, except to make more intermediate positives. Even when they remastered the star wars trilogy, they did so from the intermediate positives made from the negative. The original negative should stay in good shape for a very long time, as it's really only accessed to make intermediate positives, usually 3 or so after the negative has been cut. You can always make more inter-negs and release prints from these, which means that the negative will probably NOT degrade due to usage, but from the natural wear of the dyes.

Also, the line in the article regarding digital editing is incorrect. Films are edited in digital form on the computer, but the edit decision list is given to a negative cutter who cuts the negative. There is no loss of quality editing digitally.

I think the game deserves the praise it gets. It was a lot of fun, and very original. But as far as storytelling goes, I don't think it's fair to heap the praise. For one thing, the story is extremely simplistic. It's a story of survival and not much else. It's along the lines of Half Life, in that it's essentially action, connected by plot points. There are no complex relationships or emotional character struggles. It's all manifested physically, essentially a run and (portal)gun action movie. As an interactive world, it is fantastic, but as a story, it's rather simple. Compare the characters in Portal (or even HL2) to those in say, Metal Gear Solid, and they are shallow by comparison. Where portal and HL2 succeed, it that they give us so much with so little. However, there is only so far you can go unless spice up the world with non-interactive elements.

It's interesting to hear this argument, when I don't know of any videogame that actually DOES explore, in depth and in complexity, homosexuality, for that matter, a heterosexual relationship. The complexity of relationships in even the best videogame, does not compare AT ALL to that of the best cinema. At best, all I've seen in videogames is the equivilent of a fairly tale love story. There aren't really any standouts that I know of.

But yes, perhaps it is a problem. If I wanted to make a game about the horrors of children in combat, that might require the player to target and kill children. From what I gather, this is a huge no-no for the ESRB. This is probably because of what I elude to above: there really aren't any games that use violence and sex in a way that is socially enlightening, and so they are percieved as a less serious medium. So it's sort of a catch 22: you can't make provocative games (and have them rated properly) unless you're taken seriously, yet you can't be taken seriously unless your games are provocative...
