I think you should try installing windows more often then. It is not exactly "click-click-done" either. After you install the "Operative System", you have to install all the drivers (IF they exist at all; I remind you that lots of 5-year old hardware actually don't have drivers for Vista).

The FIRST thing Linux guys say when you mention you are having problems with a distro, is 'You should install the latest release.' - The EXACT same thing is true of Windows. Windows 7 IS click-click-done. In fact I'll step through them here for you:

    1. Boot USB/DVD
    2. Choose Geographical Location only (finally with Win7 it now auto sets everything else).
    3. Enter Username and Password.
    4. (If WiFi Detected) Choose Access Point to connect to.
    5. Log In.
    6. Enjoy/Profit

[Sequence Shortened, but NO steps removed. (to mis-quote Apple)]

That's it. On almost all hardware built in the past 5 years. I used to manage corporate deployments of Windows, so I'm the last person to say that Windows is easy to deploy/configure (it wasn't), but Windows 7 is a massive leap forwards, even over Vista.

And barring Office, Windows 7 ships with everything the average user needs (Internet/Photos/Media/Burning).

I'm all for people promoting their preferences of OS, but lets at least start with a level playing field shall we ?

Is this do-able on Windows DHCP ? I'm using pfSense, and have it serving out 192.168.2.x for my wireless, against 192.168.1.x for my wired (OPT1 and LAN in pfSense language), but I'm having DNS issues on the wireless where they either resolve to internet or LAN domain, but never both. I'm rambling but in essence can I get Windows DHCP to 'know' that the requesting client is on wireless, and serve out an IP from the appropriate scope ?

I think the way forward here is that as part of your small business bank account perks, your bank sells/rents you (at discount) one of those hand held 3G card terminals (commonly seen brought to your table in restaurants). This system would protect the small business from bounced cheques (why IS that spelt differently in the US?) whilst providing the customer with a familiar experience.

Got Office 2003 ? Some of that is .NET code. Got Live Messenger ? Ditto. Nvidia or ATI graphics cards ? well, those DEFINITELY need .NET to work properly. Let's not forget all those extra bits of freeware you've also got, some of those will be .NET based as well.

As I understand it, this add-on just alters the useragent to declare that the PC it's running on is .NET capable (i.e. you got at least one version of the .NET framework installed). This is a good thing - as it means MORE sites that have .net extensions or controls will work in FF, meaning you can finally ditch IE completely (in theory).

Yes their installation methods were suspect - but remember MS's major user base is The Doe Family, who can just about turn their PC on and off. Do you really thing they know the answer to 'Do you really want to install the .NET Framework Assistant ?' - If course they wont know what that is, or whether they need it.

Does your mechanic, dentist, doctor, explain to you each and every thing they do to you or your car in intimate detail ? No.

You're constantly replaying a 4 year old game and you're saying console gaming is in a rut?

No, I'm constantly playing a game for 10 months* (when I started WoW) - As I'm only mid level, I'm still discovering and learning new stuff. When (if) I get to level 70 (or whatever the new expansion sets the upper level to), then yeah I'm sure the novelty will wear off.

Also, WoW is constantly updated, there's new patches about once a month, adding and changing stuff, not to mention the two large expansion packs, that completely revamp the whole game.

My point was, that underneath EVERY console game is one of 3 types: War, Driving, and Sports. What people call RPGs on consoles isn't really RPG, it's just the War model with some basic stats added. For real RPG players, console RPGs are very much RPG-lite, aimed at first timers.

  20. Re:God Dammit on LucasArts, Bioware Announce Star Wars MMO · · Score: 2, Insightful

The reason there are no MMOs for the current crop of consoles is down to how the online games are hosted.

With PC MMOs, there is a massive server infrastructure that you as a client connect into, this infrastructure keeps the game going even if no-one plays it, and has to be maintained for as long as there is (enough) player demand, which could be several years.

Publishers view the console market as crash-and-burn with each new game typically expected to be played by more than 10% of players for only about 3 months or so (Halo being the obvious exception).

So that the console game publishers don't have to constantly invest in server farms for games that only have critical mass for a few weeks, they went with peer-hosted online gaming; One player becomes the 'host' and the other players connect to them as peers. If that 'host' disconnects then the game is over.

I'm glad that Sony have thrown their hat into the ring with regard to console MMOs and I do hope that other publishers follow suit, however, I feel that as the console player demographic is mostly 10-25 in age it is unlikely that MMOs on consoles will take off - mostly because that demographic would rather spend the monthly subs that most MMOs require on the next new shiny war* game that's just come out.

Also, it has to be said, can a console REALLY provide the complex interface that makes most MMOs so involving ? I'm a WoW player (not uber, lvl 70 is still WAY off for me), and the amount of key bindings needed to make the game effective is mind-bending - not sure how you'd translate that to a Wiimote or 360 controller.
