  8. Surely... on Gaming Mice Get Benchmarked · · Score: 3, Insightful

Surely mouse preference is subjective ?

Graphics cards have a small defined set of criteria that they are judged against. If a graphics card is faster than any other, with higher refreshes, and higher resolution, then for 99.9% of users it is percieved the best.

Mice however, require the user to be comfortable holding them, with the correct mousepad, with or without a wrist rest, and then there's wireless vs wired, bluetooth vs infra-red, trackball or optical. Some users swear by a simple 3 button scroll wheeled mouse, some users can't function without all those extra buttons on the sides. A high DPI is one thing, but for some that just makes the mouse TOO twitchy. Gaming is not ALL about twitch speeds, and frag counts. There are many games out there, where a slower moving mouse with higher accuracy is actually benificial (most of the God Sims, spring to mind).

At the end of the day, there are different mouses for different houses. What works for you, probably doesn't work for your neighbour. As such most mouse reviews have limited value, with or without benchmarks.

    Maybe I'm just lucky?

Out of interest, RC2 of Vista was shite at hibernation, so I guess it was one of things MS worked on for the RTM.

My pre-order was with Currys, and I got a nasty letter yesterday telling me don't bother to collect because they wont have any today (Launch Day). I went in the shop this morning in order to a)bitch at the the manager citing fraud (as they had taken my deposit money, and the receipt is a bill of contract) and to b)demand a refund if I didn't get a definite delivery date.

All over the store are signs saying that Currys stores will not have any Wiis before Christmas. After talking to the Manager, he told me that Nintendo have 're-allocated' all of Currys* allocation for 2006 to other retailers (Game, HMV, Virgin).

I demanded my refund and got it, no arguments.

Cest la vie, I'll now wait for the version that'll play DVDs, and hopefully be in a different colour.

The nice things about them are:

    1. Very Good build quality
    2. Large variety of players from simple music only to full blown media players.
    3. Mount as standard USB mass storage
    4. NO DRM what-so-ever
    5. Supports mp3, wav, ogg, wma, wmv, divx, xvid (some formats are player dependent)
    6. Windows Media Player can sync to it (as can many other freeware library managers)

  18. Not That Simple. on Vista Gets Official Release Dates · · Score: 2, Informative

    Actually, it's not that simple.

The days of snagging your works (or a friends works) Volume Licence Key are over.

Vista corporate licencing now has the OS pinging a Corporate Licence server which in turn keeps track of how many clients are out there, it then pings MS which greenlights whether that org is still within licencing terms or not. The actual system is a bit more in depth than that, but essentially that's how it works. If the client can't ping the licence server within 90 days, then the client goes into 'reduced functionality mode'.

So even though I would never condone actually hacking the OS, the only option to the pirates is to patch the OS to bypass the Licence Server ping. But I'm sure MS have forseen that and have all manner of checksum systems in place.
