How can we ever compare common thievery with institutional thievery? Abuse of power? Please.
Anyway, I used to be the kind of person who hated SW piracy to death (to name some "evil thievery" thing) - until i met REALLY poor people. And this was in 92, Linux was simply out of the radar. I realized that sometimes the law was evil.
People grow, kids stop being naive. When they mature, they'll realize not everything's black and white.
Where I work at, our bandwidth is dedicated to the servers, so we can't play stream download songs. So I bought myself a portable radio and tune my favorit e station.
I think most jobs are like this. Anyway, didn't we think that "video killed the radio stars" about 20 years ago? IMO, Radio's still alive and kicking.
But think about it. Houses or offices can have their "mini nuclear power station" and recharge their standard batteries there. Who knows? You might see "beta benders" out there in the future. Just insert a coin and put your battery there.
(Hmmmm wasn't this idea shown in the sci-fi game 'Flashback' by Delphine soft?)
Did the ipod come with a warning label? If it didn't, it could be the cause for a lawsuit. "It didn't say 'do not open with a screwdriver or may result in severe injuries'".
My question is, if someone finally gets the money to upgrade their low-end CPU to something faster, why should the OS stop working?
The point is to help poor countries develop, not to just "help poor people in poor countries do basic stuff".
What if those poor countries were given high-end computers as DONATIONS? Like for schools, universities, etc?
IMO Microsoft is asking for BIG trouble here. Key term: Discrimination.

As long as they're abiding by the terms of the license, does Apple, any corporation, or any entity for that matter, have any obligation to contribute anything back to the project?
If you don't like that people JUST obey the license, then change the license!
i.e. If a company decides to launch a similar product based on this source code, they're obligued to keep a revision history in a previously agreed format (i.e. CVS, SVN, etc) so that the authors can track down their improvements.
Microsoft had allowed pirate copies of Windows to flourish so they'd get more revenue later.

Anywho, hopefully this will provide webmasters with enough incentive to create proper standard HTML pages instead of designing them for IE only.
:D
I'm hoping for XULRunner to come out so we can start dev'ing our XUL apps
Still, there are always the fearful. FUD or truth?

and then start stabbing it with a screwdriver...
Oh no. First it was the "run linux". Then the "welcomed overlords".
What's next? "Does it explode when punctured?"?

Cool! Now we only have to discover 10 security flaws and disclose each monthly. Then we'll have 800 million downloads! :D

I didn't enjoy it, it seemed so pointless. And whenever that stupid thing became crazy shooting sparks everywhere...
i mean, that's it? This is "using the force"? Frankly I was disappointed by the thing (and i was 8!). I had more fun admiring my starwars bedsheet.
Never underestimate the power of the force. B-)

Ta-da!
They're probably back up and operating at a new site already.
Yes, but with this precedent, expect the sites to be shutdown just as fast as warez sites.

a)Give us an alternative physics / tech newswire, and we'll follow.
b)If it costs more, what makes you think the consumer will buy it in the first place?
c)If you had researched on nanotube displays, you'd see that it's the evolution of CRT's - hence the same (or more) lifetime.
d) This is slashdot! Why do you think we get news on the Space Elevator when it's years or decades away? Doh!
