Adults always seem to think they know why kids do stuff. They are ten thousand "teen psychology" books out so that adults can understand what we think. But how can you know if you don't ask a kid?

Actually, I'm in high school and yes, I've read it, yes all my friends have read it, yes we are planning to see the movie. But none of us are reading because of those books. They aren't exactly great except for a cute fun read. There's no depth (try Eva by Peter Dickinson for that).

"....The Xbox will sell for $299 at retail - losing as much as $110 on every box sold - and Allard wants to get the retail price to $100 as quickly as possible."

I think the X-Box chipset is nvidia 2.5 (not sure on the number) I read something like, the GeForce3 was 2.0, and X-box is 2.5...

Since the X-Box is a PC, how long is it going to take before we can run all those NES, SNES, N64, PS, PS2 emulators currently found online on our X-Boxes? I don't know much about this, but it seems to me that since the X-Box is really just a PC, it has a harddrive, a built-in ethernet/broadband adapter (note: Gamecube has one as an additional purchase only), it has a real Intel processor, and a real NVidia graphics card, then it can be hacked and it can be programmed to run programs emulating ALL the other consoles and the games that run on them.

    Now THAT would be cool.

Not all Muslims or Arabs are fanatical terrorists. I'll bet you there were Muslims killed along with Christians, Jews, and aethiests in the attacks; we can't choose to blame a group of people because of the acts of a small number of them. The US has been responsible for many injustices against its minorities, but we don't blame all Americans.

On a side note, I remember back in 1993 when the WTC was bombed (I was only in elementary school at the time), Channel 2 was the only one broadcasting (from the Empire State Building) because everyone else was on the Twin Towers. Eight years later, the Twin Towers no longer even exist, and Channel 2 is STILL the only one left broadcasting. You would have thought that the other channels would have learned about redundancy and backup antennas by now!

Today, in my high school, one of my classmates remarked, "Hey, look the Internet is actually still up!" What a bittersweet triumph for the Internet; it can definitely be said now that even if NYC, most television and radio stations in the tri-state area, and Washington are out of the picture, news will still get out via the many nodes of the net. Of course, we already knew that, but still...

  21. Disagreement on Albert Einstein - Person of the Century · · Score: 1

Interestingly enough, my 9th grade history class recently discussed this particular topic (most influential person of the century) and came up with these three most important people:

    1. Adolf Hitler
    2. Karl Marx
    3. Albert Einstein

    Explanations:

    1. Even though Hitler may have been wrong and evil and whatever else, he influenced every part of this century from the 1930s till now. Example:
    A. Holocaust made us aware of discrimination, prejudice, etc...
    B. After terrible losses to the German Army during the war, the Russia began to expand and formed the USSR...Iron Curtain, Berlin Wall...etc..This started the America/democracy versus USSR/communism and the Cold War.
    C. Take a look at NATO and Yugoslavia, that was also partly affected by the USSR and thus Germany.
    D. WWII helped to bring to international attention the need for a United Nations.
    E. Nuclear weapons.

    2. Although Karl Marx lived during the 1800s, his ideas affected this century. The man refined the concept of socialism; communism is based upon that concept, and the effects of communism are quite obvious. (see above: USSR, Cold War, China, etc....)

    3. I disagree with Einstein for the fact that he and his discoveries/theories don't affect the majority of the world. The man did NOT invent the atom bomb, even though he might have contributed in some ways, so it can't be reasoned that he helped to stop WWII. Ok, sure, in the US, we know who Einstein is. In Western Europe, they know too, but what about India, China, the Middle East, and Africa? (especially the rural areas) How much can the theory of relativity affect those farmers? Would they even care if they knew?

Yes, it's good because the number of academic competitors decreases, but I find it very hard to relate to many of them. I do have friends but when it comes down to computers or just technology, their only thought is "AOL" and "chat" I haven't experienced as much discouragement but my teachers often tend to ask the boys in another room for help with technical problems even when I'm right next to them. Of course, those boys are all some of my best friends.

In my family, I'm the one who is the most computer literate and both my parents work with computers for their jobs. My brother learns mostly from me.
