  1. Privacy doesn't count? on YouTube Blocked in Brazil · · Score: 1

It's quite dumb to have sex in public, especially as a public figure. But I am slightly amazed at some of the comments here about "freedom of speech" and "the Brazilian government does x" or "spread it as much as you can to show em!".

This has nothing to do with freedom of speech of the Brazilian government as a whole. As I understand it, this is a civil lawsuit by the person in question to stop having a sex video shown. Which became court ordered, a court is not "the Brazilian government". It seems some techies here have little understanding of how political power and the court systems work. It's the same as you stepping to a court to ask them to do something (in this case protect your privacy) and the court ruling in your favour, that has nothing to do with "the Brazilian government" or "freedom of speech".

I'm also a bit amazed at how vengeful some people's comments are with how it should be spread. Don't get me wrong, she wasn't the smartest person in the world to have herself be filmed publically making out and later having sex in the water, but that doesn't mean she should be criminalised or hurt for it or? Its a bit the "if you leave your door open it serves you right to be robbed" argument. People wanting other people to suffer for making a mistake, justifying the actual thing that was done wrong. Because while she was stupid, somebody did violate her privacy by filming it and putting it online.

As for somebody commenting about how "a government" dares to impose law on a US company. Aside from it being a court, thank god they can! Sorry, but I really do not want to live in a world where companies make the laws, can break the laws, etc. and governments have no power over them..... oh wait that world is already happening. I have nothing against google, but they are "just a company", they should not have power over governments who where democratically elected.

Of course otherwise it's stupid they would court order to block all of youtube for an entire nation. But I think this more showcases the issues with lawmaking over the Internet and policing the Internet.

I must say I am a bit disappointed by most comments found here. I had expected smarter replies basically. It seems the mighty dollar overrules any sense of morality or interests in human rights.

Comments about if you want to do business there you need to abide to their laws. Correct... so by doing so, you have decided money is more important then human rights. And in my eyes you are wrong. It's not a very solid defence really for Yahoo!. It basically says making a profit is more worthwhile then human rights. Because China is an economic powerhouse it has the rights to do whatever it wants.

I guess those posters here also had no problems with companies like IBM supporting the Nazi's and doing business with the Nazi's when the US was wat war with Germany? Because hey, if you want to do business there, you need to accept their laws and as such you become absolved of any blame.

So perhaps do business there, as long as you can do it on your own terms, those that respect human rights and decent moral values (don't tell me the mass executions and torture are just another set of moral values we should respect and it's all "culture"). China is not really a communist country, it's just a good old fashioned dictatorship, with the most executions of any country in the world almost. Who torture their prisoners and who do imprison people for simply opposing the government. When it's some minor (compared to China) dictator like Saddam we all cry havoc, when that dictatorship temps us with money it all becomes alright.

So if your wife, husband (woops this is slashdot.. sorry wife's and husbands? :P), brother, sister, friend suddenly disappears, gets tortured (oh sorry, I mean re-educated according to "traditional" and "cultural" values) and perhaps murdered due to Yahoo! giving their details to an oppressive government you will still defend the mighty dollar over human rights? It's so bloody easy when it doesn't affect you directly. I wonder what the people being tortured right now would think about such high and mighty statements.

These where massive projects, executes execeptionally well with a LOT of engineering knowlege. I don't know where you got the idea from they had no engineering knowledge? Most ancient civalisations like the Bablonians where master builders.

The zigurat's remains that probably stood model for "the tower of Babel" in the Bible have also been found quite some years ago. Not much left of it however. It's in Iraq.

This is nothing more then an "I agree" post on the Firefly part I guess. While I have always been a dedicated B5 fan, Firefly really blew me away. Mostly because it also is just not "another sf". It is more a great story, great charcters, set in a sf world.

Anybody who enjoyed Firefly would probably also really enjoy the Anime series "Cowboy Bebop" I think.

I don't really 100% agree on the marketing thing and established fan base. Of course it matters and the one of Star Trek is huge. But shows like B5 also had this. Be it perhaps not at the level of Star Trek. But all spinoffs got canceld before they got a chance to grow. Yet, even with bad ratings Star Trek shows often are allowed years to run. Farscape also had a dedicated, be it yet again smaller, following. And it got canceld before it's time.

TV shows, movies and also video games are all the same however in one bit I do agree with you on; it is all about worrying about the percieved risk. Shame however that in the end it is the risk takers who may flop a lot, but also eventually set the standards and create the things like the original Star Trek (which I believe was also cancled once). Those who risk do in the end win more. Al through the problem of worrying about the risk is really making it harder for them. But eventually you can just not rehash the same old crap :S

Mind you, I do like the idea of living fictional universes that keep getting spinoffs. Because it's not so much about the individual show, but the finctional universe. In that sense I would love to see a good tv show about Warhammer 40k for example. Or Battle Tech.

But this is a europian thing and most people don't realise how much power "Europe" has over the national goverments. But also the Europian parlement has voted agains't patents.

The problem is that a few selected individuals are trying to push this through no matter what. Because atm the Europian parlement can still be overruled by these few individuals it's perfectly possible to undemocratically and totally agaisn't the wish of both the people and it's representatives make laws for them. Which is just gross and sickening. Nothing to do with democracy anymore at all. Despite not being a supporter or the Europian constitution that is comming (infact I will vote agaisn't it due to many issues), one thing it does try and solve is that problem. The Europian Parlement would become the ruling body, and not the selected few.

Seeing how NOBODY wants this, major goverments of major Europian countries have spoken out agains't it, tried to block it, the Europian parlement has tried to block it, etc. These few individuals won't listen. I can't make anything else out of it then that massive corruption is at play here.

This is truely beyond sad. Here in the Netherlands, even the last parties originally thinking it a good idea have started putting in a motions to try and stop it. Unfortunatly we also have one minister here (brinkhorst) who belongs to those people who clearly have been bribed who keeps at it. When the parlement took on a motion forcing him to vote no, he said he wouldn't do that and vote yes anyway or else he would "lose face".

Basically corruption is so bad in the Europian Union its sickening and nothing can stop those Patents, unless that corruption is first fixed. God knows why the Europian Union needed to take over the US lobby system. It's really giong to be the ruin of us.

And why this is allowed? allowed publically even? People like Brinkhorst imho should be suspended and have put criminal charges put agains't them (and see if they really are corrupt. Until that time, if they openly defy mandatory rules laid upon them by parelement, they should not be allowed to function in such a position of power).

Having said all that, here in the Netherlands they are just at the start of season 3 and Enterprise is the only Star Trek show that doesn't physically hurt to watch. Well except the original, but that's more because that one is just hilariously funny.

I will always be amazed how people actually enjoy shows like TNG and Voyager and the first few seasons of DS9. Horrible, horrible space-soaps. DS9 only became good when it started to steal idea's from B5 in my humble opinion.

I am amazed at that Enterprise actually managed to become a decend series that has some real humanbeings and not this fake "oh this planet has been at war for 10.000 years. Lets talk it out in 30 minutes and peace shall reign forever" or "I've got a crush on crewman x and really don't know what to do with it" or "teach me how to be more human captain Janeway. and do my boobs show up enouth in this suit?" or my ultimate favorite "we as actors and writers are bored and out of idea's, I know... lets go to an alternate reality where we can all act really poorly for the eppisodes running time acting out different charcters. And if that doesn't work, how about getting stuck on the holodeck?", etc. etc...

The irony is that I can remember trekkies even bitching like hell about series like Voyager. Now however all these series are good because they found a new Star Trek series to hate. Why do Trekies actually like Star Trek? Seeing as how much they complain about it?

Mind you, all that time traveling nonsense in Enterprise. But thank god for nomore holodecks and whiny whiny eppisodes that feel like "As the world turns.. in spaccceeeeee".

The right mixture of banning and harsh -but fair- moderation mixed with just letting some people walk the line more then you would want them to walk seems to work better. A mac power user in my eyes is still a total novice user. Perhaps a little harsh, but most Mac users are so estranged from how computers actually work, it's scary.

And while I am no Windows fanboy, I do get a bit tired of this endless windows bashing. The Windows machine I use here has never had any problems, no trojans, no viruses, no spyware. And I actually take very little effort to make this "magic" work. Just don't use IE, don't use Outlook, perhaps a firewall and know what you do. Usually that's enouth. Not really that special.

And while Windows is perhaps inheritly more insecure then other OS's at present, I'm sorry... but NO OS is 100% secure like that author likes to claim (another good show that using a Mac makes one dumb to how Software works). Mac users are indeed also just not an interesting target. Partly because Windows is the most used, partly because Windows has a lot of security problems and partly because it's just "common" to hate and target Windows.

I have and continue to use all 3 major players (Linux, Windows and Mac). But the Mac really only when people force me due to something work related. Aside from the fact that Ed Yourdon had made himself look ridicules so many times with wrong predictions (like Y2K), I generally am torn between if Outsourcing actually helps developing nations or not. The negative impact on Western jobs is obvious of course. Al through I do think that most big companies who like to save money so much by firing everybody forget that soon everybody will be unemployed in the West and who exactly is then supposed to be buying all those products (something you can already see happening due to the current economic recession in the EU being caused due to low spending of consumers among other things).

I generally tend to view Outsourcing as a kind of "locust like behaviour". It seems these companies move from poor country to poorer country to use cheap labour and whenever it becomes to expensive, leave again. Because their only interest seems to be pleasing shareholders on the short-term, not just the eventual end product suffers, but they also will just as easily move on to a cheaper country. And obviously they don't care for social benefits, etc. for their workers. After all, if they did, they wouldn't have moved away.

But on the other hand, it can give a boost to developing nations. Especially for the IT industry, people need to get educated to a certain level. So while perhaps the intentions aren't noble, it might be a side effect that is beneficial in the end to developing nations? I am not sure if there is any correlation, but I've noticed that when I these days Google a coding problem, more then once I end up finding quite an insightful article written by somebody who's name sounds like they are from India. But obviously they could be people who now live and work in the US or EU as well.
