Funny enough, this sort of comfortable 'loose grip' on the mouse is great in FPS games. You'd be surprised the amount of control gained from the standard and limiting flopping the hand on the mouse. It works well enough for me with my mx510 and mx700.

I'm a beginner, decent against humans, but I still get whooped by a computer. I recommend you look into GNUGo and use Jago as a GUI. Jago will let you play games against your friends online with a very, very nice GUI, and by plugging in the GnuGO binary, Jago will connect to it and you can vs a very good, and free, computer. Available for Linux and Windows, not sure about Mac.

    You can get Jago here:

    By the way:
I have mod points, and frequently do, but I'll opt out of modding this thread to reply. I, and others that I've seen, usually don't waste mod points modding people off-topic or troll unless need be. The Slashdot guides specifically say to focus on modding up, not down. Following this thread and wasting mod points on modding down every reply would be worthless.

Personally, I feel some of the more interesting and entertaining thoughts come out of off topic threads. The only time I'd waste a vote on "offtopic" would be say, if someone was troll-ish and shouted "Doom 3 RULES!" or something like "My computer crashed, what does this error mean?"

It's amazing how badly Firefox screwed up extension versioning. This procedure is an apt demonstration.

I have to agree with you there, especially when using nightlies. There's really no excuse for the silly maxversion tag which rarely means anything at all. For awhile, old perfectly working extensions wouldn't even show, hence the 'Show Old Extension' extension! That's messed up. If an extension isn't broke, and chances are it isn't, it should simply work.

There are other 'normal' ways to upgrade the version number, including over the update system, but obviously that relies on the original author doing something about it... which isn't something you want to bank on. It certainly should have been done much differently.

I'm really not sure why authors insist on setting their maxversion so low, especially when they don't plan to 1) put out a new version before the next release, or 2) support their extension later. If you're going to just release it and forget it, you'd think you'd at least bump the version number way up. Perhaps it's an "to get listed at update.mozilla.org" thing. Just a guess.

This was also a chance for them to finally prove their update system works with 1.0.1. Instead, we're all redownloading the .exe or .zip again. I love Firefox as a surfer and as a web guy, but for a browser that claims to really pay attention to the user and usability, they're missing the obvious: automation.

No sweat, glad it worked for you. I messed the application dir up a bit trying to cut my data out of it, and Slashdot took a bit out... just to clarify it should be soemthing like:

    %appdata%\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\(random)\extens ions

(No space, Slashdot does that.) Also, for new downloads... you can save an extension to your hard drive, rename the .xpi to .zip (or .rar if I'm wrong), unzip it, find the file with the same maxversion line, and edit that higher. Then just rezip the folders and rename it .xpi again. Instant bumped version.

I installed 1.0.1, then reinstalled 1.0 because I like the Textzoom extension. This hasn't been officially updated to 1.0, but extensionsmirror has a link to a version patched for 1.0 installs.

Since it's not being maintained, I'll probably eventually have to give it up, but I won't for such a minor Firefox update.

Actually, no you don't. Changing extension maxlimits is trival.

    - First, find your profile. In Explorer find: %appdata%\Settings\\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\\extensions

    - Second, open Extensions.rdf with notepad, metapad, etc.

    - Third, find and replace any of:
    em:maxVersion="1.0"
    With em:maxVersion="5.0"

And you're good to go. You can put any number you want, but I like 5.0 just to make it easier, especially with nightlies in the past. You could also use about:config to lower your version number, but that could have other side effects. Now, if doing this makes your extension not work because of code changes (rarely) or somehow borks your profile (highly doubtful), use at your own risk. :)

And Extensionsmirror.nl is a great place to find prebumped extensions.

For that matter, if you can't manage to carry a decent conversation and watch TV at the same time, don't bug me by sending 1 line emails or IMs at random intervals, I'll ignore them... and eventually, the sender.

As you say, this has existed long before technology. I hate when people call me on the phone and eat, or watch TV, or do chores. Not because I mind they're doing something productive, but because they can't manage to carry a decent conversation and are simply wasting my time. Same way with people who take non-imporant cellphone calls at resturaunts. Hang up the phone, turn it off, and focus. It's not hard. There's no problems with mutlitasking, just problems with people who have never been able to focus. This is why we get people who come up with the brilliant multitasking ideas of cell phone SUV drivers and fastfood-eating drivers.

Multitasking these days is easier than ever, as more and more of the things I do can take care of things in the background without my interaction. Computer software is getting great at background work, home electronics are buzzing with activity these days, and the end result is everything is ready and working when I need it.

I certainly wouldn't call Japanese the world's most complex language. I merely said instant learning via immersion is a myth. I'd have a much harder time mastering Mandarin or Cantonese, really. As a student of Japanese for several years, I'd say that the language is indeed easier than it's made out to be. For that matter, so are the Kanji once you break the seemingly meaningless jumble of strokes into rhyme and reason.

But like any language, to say the grammar is easy is also misleading. It's easy to jump in and learn a thing or two, but to really master the language is far from simple. Particles can be a real headache for any foreign student, the sentence structure is almost reverse from ours, and verbs have many, many conjugations. Sure, the first few base forms, the -masu forms, and etc are easy as pie, but I've yet to see the student who hasn't had to put serious time into learning the -te forums, for example.

This doesn't even begin to get into the polite vs plain speak, the social issues of when and where to use which, or for that matter actual conversation, which like English in actual conversion, tends to throw most of the rulebook out the window. I believe one other factor that contributes greatly to the perceived difficulty Japanese is that compared to English, Japanese is a very implied language. Subjects, actions, places, and much more are completely dropped from sentences if they're assumed to be known. Basically, one has to actually pay attention to what's said in a conversation and extrapolate... something many people lack practice at.
