I think those people have a too god life. They should be sent to some poor areas in the world. Live there for 5 years in shelters, boxes and eat the dirt and trash from the others. I am sure they will never ever complain about such a stupid useless thing again.
Not to mention that they will be out of our hair for a while.;)
They'll do the trick until you get a really nasty piece of spyware like zestyfind or a bad variant of coolwebsearch and your TCP/IP stack becomes corrupted.
But I digress... This news really isn't anything major. It is just a standard business practice. Though posting up something like that on a site like this will almost always generate anti-M$ flamewars.
Anti-spyware does the trick for me every time, but then again the only thing it ever detects are a few cookies.
If you relist if your reserve isn't met you are just giving money to ebay. Which is another reason most people don't really mess with reserve prices. Not to mention that it is extra to even list the item with a reserve price.
If someone sets a reserve price for an item and the winning bidder wins with a lower price, the seller does not have to uphold their end of the deal and they can relist it.
Most sellers will just go ahead and honor the bid any way but when you get into this kind of money (and publicity) it would be wise for the seller to relist it. She has free advertising already.:)
You can actually. You can damage their reputation. So I would assume that the deposit is to deter any misuse of the character's already established reputation.
With that said, I really fail to see this endeavour last past the critical first 6 months.
Rented characters have no friends, no history, no appreciation for their equipment, no guilds and no ties to the player. This all adds up to painful grouping experiences and even more painful raiding experiences for anyone unlucky enough to group with a rented character.
Besides, how does this make any sense to the common person on the street who knows nothing about the game but wants to learn? The best way to learn a character is to play through the 'baby-steps' and see if you like them. If you do, great and if not then pick something else. All of this is done for only the price of the game (since the first month on a lot of them is free).
Seasoned vets of any MMORPG already know the basic role of the majority of characters across the board so I fail to see a market there either.
The Supreme Court is considering whether companies behind unrestricted file-sharing services -- Grokster and Morpheus -- should be liable for copyright infringement.
Do the labels think that the Supreme Court has any say in the online music world or technology? Sure it can regulate hardware manufacturers, developers and programmers but it can't regulate the use of the software.
Whatever the supreme court decides will already be benign when they reach a decision. New technology will be out or older technology more utilized (such as Usenet or private FTP servers). I say bring it because the only people that are going down are the ones that punch their hardest into thin air.
Universal (because it is universally compatible)
Media (because it _is_ a media medium)
Disc (because that is what it is)
Everyone that I have talked to says the same thing. So I have to ask: What was Sony thinking? Or did it just not translate that well from Japanese? Did someone set us up the bomb again?
I hate it when people think that it is the games that do this kind of stuff. Like certain people can't "tell" when a game real or fake. They think that gamers go into this waking state when playing games and just start going on murderous rampages.
It all started with Doom. Nothing happened with that (though people still blame it for outbreaks of violence).
Then it went to Duke Nukem 3D. Nothing. Then Carmageddon (so bad that the UK version has "zombies" instead of pedestrians). Nothing.
Up to today's games where Grand Theft Auto is now the focus of so much scrutiny. Give it up people. No one is responsible for your actions except for you. Games aren't going to send anyone on a murderous rampage who wasn't going to already go on it any way.
I will tell you this though: If all games do indeed go to the next-gen consoles don't be surprised if we see a signifigant reduction in video-game violence. Due ot the closed and controlled nature of the console market and consoles themselves, government officials can regulate that a lot easier than anything they could on the PC. That was what made the PC so popular in the first place: all of the violent games were there (Wolf 3D anyone?).
I honestly don't see any use for the (ironically named) "Universal" Media Disc for the price that it is set at.
$20.00 per disc for a system that can't even display it on a TV at DVD quality? Correct me if I'm wrong but aren't they cheaper to make that VHS tapes?
I pity anyone that actively buys UMD discs. Just get a portable DVD player and use the DVDs you already have instead of forking out another $20.00 for a substandard version..02
Editors at the website Slashdot are confused about the meanings of "your rights" and "online"
That is what I was going to say. This is hardly my rights online. It _is_ in politics. But I guess YRO needed more news today.

Never have, never will.
If I want to have a portable media player I will purchase a portable DVD player for half the price and will do everything the PSP can except for pictures and games.
No, wait. I'm wrong. An article about all those empty servers is much more interesting.
EverQuest 2 servers are hardly empty.

modded redundant in a redundant story while replying to a redundant thread. score!
all hail the slashdot dupe editor king!
It is about your rights online in reguard to the EULA agreement with said game's publisher. Thin line, yes?
So if it were other companies doing this wouldn't it be more prudent to instead sue the other companies?
I really don't see how this is Google's fault. Then again, I don't really care.
Because it is about a game, silly.
No, because Ebay still gets their money.
The buyer doesn't lose any money.

If I could, I would mod you up to +5 funny! You just made me spill my coffee!!
True, I didn't see the reserve comment until after I posted my message.
Kind of makes you wonder what the reserve is, eh?
Clicky to see the item details. Of course, bidding has already ended and it sold for more than US $10,000!
Yea but that kind of knocks you down a few pegs on the ol' corporate ladder. It kind of cuts into the whole "ass-kissing" thing. :p
You would seriously pay upwards of $500 just to test out a character? You can't even buy it.
:)
Besides, renting is sooooooo 80's.

Overall, this sounds like a bad idea.
From TFA so it is not off-topic:

Its as if I were in a Best Buy somewhere and I were reading the back of the box.

Usenet has no hosting costs.
Well I'll stick with my recently-purchased 6600GT for now then. Those numbers are horrible for a new top-of-the-line card. Shame on you nVidia!
