    No, GCC only killed the market for C and C++ compilers. Which is partially why Microsoft came up with .NET languages and the like, and moved on.

    My all time favourite C++/C compiler was the Watcom compiler family. It still lives on as Open Watcom project. Too bad it's not widely used, because the whole OS world is still gaga about GCC...

    But that's OS "choice" for you... It's kind of like saying "any color will do as long it's black".

    No it's not progress. It would be if OS tools provided an actual better and more advanced way of writing software. But as the article says, OS development tools have no technological advantage; The only advantage is they're free.

    I would say Windows is pretty much clearly superior in supporting third party close source applications. You know, the one's that actually bring the bacon for programmers.

    CUPS already has the same functionality as Windows printer driver installation (scanning local network for printers, for example), but it's usually disabled in distros for "being too unsafe".

    There's always on thing that either makes or breaks this kinds of games: Whether the player grows to actually like the main character in the game.

    In Doom 3, after two hours of playing I really wanted to beat the main character to pulp with any means necessary.

    It's not the courts that make the laws. They just upheld then. It does absolutely nothing complaining about that, you need to go after the people who make and sign the laws.

    Yeah, but blowing hot air causes also the air around it to heat and rise, and thus politicians create a low pressure area. Which of course is filled with air with the help of more wind.

    And by "Open Source" they mean the source code for the Linux drivers is available, but they really are not taking in patches or code from other people outside the companies... Which is why I agree it would be better to also give away the specs.

    So... umm... It was Ok when they handed the stuff for free, and not ok when they wanted money for it? Can't you see the difference here? So they thought "people will copy a few hundred tapes, big deal.". Someone has to actually purchase an empty tape and make the copy. Well, since Napster allowed EVERYONE to download their work (and propably thousands did), it became a big issue.

    It's not really true saying they picked the wrong model, as their albums HAVE sold pretty well always... it's not like these guys have to try something new, they're loaded. And reloaded :)

    Blade 2 was actually pretty good, when you consider the quality of script. The point is, a good director can make the most out of a bad script. IMDB list already "The Hobbit 2", set to be released in 2011 :)

    "Die"? How many huge players are there in the processor market? Intel and AMD? This is not like the Idols finals.

    The huge crowd out there buyng computers for surfing and document writing don't care about this high-end stuff. It's the low end and how cheap it is that counts. AMD & Intel both provide it and are used by major manufacturers of PCs, so they reign.

    Comcast is trying to stop SYN flooding just like many others stated in this thread. They are NOT trying to stop you from surfing the net, unless you enjoy surfing from 50 different open windows at the same exact time. Why the hell would they want to stop people from surfing?

    The problem with people is they believe just about everything they WANT to believe in the first place.

    Console makers do not make money with selling consoles, they make money by selling games for the consoles. Graphic card makers don't make games, so they have to rake it in with the cards...

    Oh geez.... How does Windows "lock-in" you and to what? Using Windows? Well d'ohh... You can still uses OS software as much as you want even if you run Windows... Hell, run Cygwin if ya wanna. I for one won't use a desktop that locks me out of some applications, like games. But yeah, Slashdot and all, enjoy your +5...
