I see. So it's gonna play out like this: Malware creator just calls MSFT and says give me moneys, I know who made the malware. And then MSFT and the police will NOT ask at all, well how do you know this?
The professor should have pulled a pocket calculator out his pocket and say "This pocket calculator is even safer than OpenBSD, as it has never has a breach in security".
No it's not possible. It's possible IF you think any of the amazing number of people contributed into GNU/Linux software did it all and their time didn't cost anyone any money. Which of course is just not true.
Not to mention standards like POSIX and X11 standards which are not exactly "invented" in the Linux development process, but used by the OS and kernel.
So in essence, the development of GNU/Linux has been very expensive, just like any huge software effort is. But not everything directly costs money out of someone's pocket, it's more complex.
Well yeah, you're right. But if you limit to strictly open source world, can I choose a C compiler for a Linux distribution? Nope, it's GCC. Are there even any other alternatives?
Note that I am strictly talking about CHOICE here, not whether GCC is great or not (And it is for me at least, I've used it back in the day)
The point is here, what if someone bundled an another C/C++ compiler with a Linux distribution, how many people would not accept that distribution simply because it does not come with GCC?
You can also view this from an another perspective: You can't develop C++ language, unless you have support from GCC for it.
It works a lot better in Vista. I have two home machines with a restricted user as my main account and an separate admin account.
It's actually freeware programs that give most grief. It seems they are packaged or work usually in a way they assume you have admin privileges all the time. Yes, even high profile programs like Firefox and Thunderbird,
Why is not possible to use the same software to write the documents you need? After all, no one's resisting you from using open source software in Windows?
Also, are you saying programs in X don't have a different look and feel from each other? Like Gnome and KDE applications?
"Probably exaggerating"...? "Basic I/O operations broken..."? Now just honestly read yourself what you just typed. Really. Just... wow. How the hell can you even remotely believe that?
And how do you exactly know it's Vista that's broken and not Acrobat?
The reason applications have problems with Vista is they break rules or are just plain coded badly, thus not working anymore now that Microsoft clamps down security.
And for the record, it's open source applications that often fail on Vista, because they always seem to assume the user is running as admin.
Oh so people still die of diseases in their 30's like in 18th century? How about equality between women and men, just to name a few differences?
And how about NOT using company email for personal purposes, but something like gmail? Just set up a email account OUTSIDE your company, and be happy ever after.
Oh puh-leeez... EU goes after Microsoft, Microsoft pays up some (well, a LOT, but they can afford) extortion money, and continues it's ways. I mean, Microsoft ALREADY has paid a lot of fines. Now I wonder where that money went... My guess is, someone pocketed it:)
EU will never go "after Linux" because there's no money in it to be won.
So it's absolutely NOT possible to directly use, say, Adblock with Chrome? Because I have hard time believing it's "deeply tied to Mozilla's internal API", since it comes in a XPI packaged file and can be installed by the end user.
AFAIK, Firefox/Mozilla extension API is derived from Netscape extension API. Why couldn't Google just implement the API themselves, or copy it from Firefox/Mozilla sources?
And, once a console is obsoleted, if you haven't made the money you spent to develop it back, you never will)
Microsoft sold Xbox at a loss so they could gain market share.
In essence, they bought them selves to console business. You see, it's not that important MS makes a profit in a short run, it's about cutting the wins of the competition and shifting the balance.
Now Xbox 360 is selling a lot more than PS3 and Wii does not really even compete in the same market segment. What do you think the sales figures are going to look like when the next generation consoles will emerge? MS will gain even more market share.

So it's safe to say it really hit the spot and left a mark, then?:)
Well, if you consider that "the Web" you refer to is actually a lot of SERVERS linked together, and not PC clients like you suggest, MS's market share is of course a lot less.
Why then my Windows installations in the course of last 10 years have never "deterioted" on their own? My 386 from '91 has still the same Windows 3.1 installation I put there back in the day. The machine was used until recently by my parents for creating and printing religious material:)
Windows not really has to be kept alive. It keeps alive for giving people what they generally need: A working environment for surfing and writing text. Sure, every OS has their problems but generally it's the best choice for people so it reigns. It's that simple, just like in other fields of every day commercial products. Until this is recognized by OS advocates, they will be in the minority. Ubuntu is going in the right direction, though.
Yeah, but it would not be a fun game WITHOUT the Simpsons theme.
Now if someone could create GTA with Simpsons in it.... that would just be awesome. I wanna smack hoes Homer style.
I see. So it's gonna play out like this: Malware creator just calls MSFT and says give me moneys, I know who made the malware. And then MSFT and the police will NOT ask at all, well how do you know this?
Yeah, that will work...

You hold a full security audit by an external creditable auditor on your system.

GCC? It is pretty much a monopoly to me.
No it's not easier than Windows. It's just as easy, IF you have a user-friendly distribution like Ubuntu.
Microsoft has a history of using patents to protect its desktop market share
Yeah right. Where did you pull that one out? Never mind, I already guessed.
How fast would your Ubuntu system from year 2001 (you are talking about Windows XP, right?) get rooted if you install it?
