It sounds like this is going to be a close source proprietary application, but would it be adventageous to GPL it? Say, for instance, you're writing some widget modeling software. Another company faced with the same issue may needs a SIMILAR widget modeler for a different product. Then for the cost of nothing you've just found 2 companies that can combine their resources to attain a similar goal. Post it on Sourceforge and see if there's any freelance coders or other organizations who also want to help. Instead of hiring paid slackers, you've now found volunteers who are more concerned about putting out a viable product than draining a company for cash by delaying the project.

How long has the Linux community been urging Microsoft retaliation?

Linus has never wanted to take over Microsoft. He states that time and time again. While a lot of linux enthusiasts/contributors may be on a mission to take out the evil empire, the goal of linux was and still is to make a POSIX based UNIX clone for the PC. Nothing more than that.

To say that the linux community has been urging retaliation is a moot point. It'd be no different if a bunch of MS programmers had a little "let's take out linux" cult meeting. For all we know, they might do just that and Microsoft can't be held responsible for it. It would never be used in court. IN THIS CASE, the memo is from head official A to head official B. If this memo was written:

AC: "Linus, I'm pissed at Microsoft. Let's include anti-MS FUD into the 2.5 kernel tree."

Then I'd agree. Neither that memo or anything like it has transpired because Linus and AC are -NOT- trying to take out Microsoft! What individual linux geeks do in their spare time is not important to the case.

EXACTLY. I have a customer who I'm concerned about with this. I'm sure he's gotten one for his domain at GoDaddy. He's the kind of guy who's somewhat ignorant to technology. He'd look at it and think "Hmm.. $30/yr. Doesn't seem like much, I don't want my domain to expire, I'd better send this back".

These, of course, are the customers they're preying on. Not every domain owner knows their head from other parts when it comes to the inner workings of their website. I'm glad to see SOMEBODY is calling Verisign on their slimy tactic.

I've received one of these, and while it does say (in smaller print on one page) that you are transferring your domain, it appears that it's just a renewal notice.

This could be detrimental to geeks though. Quoting the article: the safest solution is to compute with the lights on. Dangit.

  23. Re:Uhhhh on Data Recovery from Jaz Disks · · Score: 2

This was my exact thought. Jaz seems like a nice backup solution. The only real backup solution I can come up with is one that involves multiple media. Take, for instance, the backup system I'm constructing at home:

My linux WS: 40GB hard drive
    My wife's M$ WS: 40GB drive

80 GB that potentially need to be backed up.

    Parts list:
    2 80GB drives ($100 for a Maxtor)
    1 IDE RAID controller
1 small drive to boot linux/Samba on
1 PC to host the thing
    1 DDS tape drive
LEGO Mindstorms (to make an autoloader)

RAID the IDEs together for 80 GB mirrored. In order for my data to be completely lost, my drive would have to fail and BOTH Maxtors would have to fail. In the event that happens, I have DDS backups of the RAID. Now, in case of fire, rotate the tapes off site... you see, paranoia can be taken to any level. In my case though, $1000 gets you a pretty stable, reliable backup solution. I don't know what could be called a PERFECT solution.

I just spent 15 hours recovering my wife's MP3s. $1,000 seems like a small price to pay now.
