Oh man when I saw that picture it sure brought a spike of memory back. My brother and I used to love playing that game. The 9 LEDs on the home plate would blink representing the type of pitch. You'd have to press swing at the right time. The game would then use an announcer type voice to dictate what happened and various LED's would light up. I think there was some sort of cartridge that you placed in the "outfield bleachers" area. Anyway, good times, good times...
I have XP and had a similar issue. I tried installing updates, but they never installed correctly. One day "poof" everything began working again. Oh well, at least it works now.
Recently I've been trying Ubuntu. After spending days attempting and failing with Kubuntu and trying to get my video card set up correctly, I switched to an Ubuntu install. With a little less headache I got the install working fine with my graphics card. The OS said I had updates available. I went ahead and installed the updates. It updated to a version that no longer boots. I have to choose the previous version from the boot menu every time I start up (haven't figured out yet how to roll back the update or find out which specific update caused the error).
As sad as both these scenarios are, a failure to update that fixes itself is a bit more convenient than an update that kills the OS.
There's still hope. Maybe Travis Hafner will develope a technologically superior workout regimen or install some bionic implants to improve his baseball performance. Then, another pronk article will be worthy of the Slashdot front page and the now available tag.
The noise issue is a definite draw. In fact, the update information from Microsoft explicitly states the reduced noise as being a direct benefit for copying to the hard drive. Probably the biggest impact. Plus... would running on HD lower heat usage due to not using the disc drive? Maybe it will improve product life.
You have just described a supposed hardware flaw. This article is about a software update. Unless there is a fundamental defect designed into the software update, your argument does not apply to this article.
Chicago - I remember specifically thinking to myself during the movie "What city is this filmed in?" I feel kind of stupid now that I know it was Chicago and I didn't recognize it. Being a former Milwaukee resident, I have been to Chicago enough times I should know. However, it does go to the point that the skyline wasn't too obvious.
Also, I know you want to suspend disbelief, but wouldn't you have some sense of pride if your city is shown prominently in a record setting movie? I live in Cleveland now and I remember getting pretty excited about spiderman 3 when they came to town. I didn't have any problem either recognizing the buildings during the movie and those where heavily dressed in CG.
I'm not sure how building a wind turbine farm across the US would replace power plants. I think the proper way to state it is that it would lessen future growth of natural gas power plants. I don't think an energy company is going to let their gas powered turbines sit idle. So natural gas usage would not decrease. Where does the excess gas supply come from for the cars?
I'm sure many people felt that way about Bear Stearns not long ago, and there was also this company called Enron that originated in the 30's... A company is not safe from falling apart if it is poorly managed no matter how much history it has.
How well they'll hold up to regular use, who knows at this point, but I think it's silly to believe that our current road system is somehow the most damage resistant design possible.
Of course the current road designs are not the most damage resistant design possible. However, they are currently the cheapest to produce! Until someone comes out with an idea that provides an immediate return on investment greater than the current design and can get through all the government political BS that is a given with public works, we will continue to use current road designs with short lived asphalt and constant potholes. Market forces can be powerful, but the initial cost of a new design is difficult to swallow.
Why do people think the profits for big oil will go down? Isn't it more realistic that Hydrogen power will be provided as a supplement to oil? It's true that it is not good for demand to be flat, but I'm sure a company that makes a business of selling energy would also get into selling Hydrogen energy. So any fall in demand or stagnation in demand for Oil will be made up with increased demand for Hydrogen and electricity. The overall demand for energy is always going to go up. The means for providing that energy may change, but Chevron, BP, Shell, etc. will be more than happy to go wherever the energy supply chain takes them. After all, if they are willing to follow it into dangerous places like Nigeria then of course they will be more than happy to set up a nice easy factory in the US to make fuel cells.
I guess the NFL games are important, but one thing 2k sports does have is the NCAA games. These seemed to be a big game for friends although I never really got into them or any other football game.
Yes, I am for moving the transceiver further from my head and placing it in a safer place where the cancer threat is less of a problem. How about something like my pants pocket? Oh wait... hmmm... maybe I didn't think this through.
I guess the sony clock from the story could be pretty tough, but it is not alone among clock radios for toughness. I have a clock radio that has been in use for somewhere in the ballpark of 15 years. It has a few bruises: The volume nob is a bit flaky as the speakers seem to cut in and out randomly due to some bad connection. However, the sound is fine after a playing with the nob a little bit. The remote has been smashed in car doors during moves and fallen to the floor more times than i can remember, but still works. Here's the coolest thing. The remote still has the original Duracell batteries from when I first bought it. They are of course beginning to corrode, but they still work fine! The expiration date on the batteries is listed as Jan '99. BTW, I use the remote every morning to push the snooze, usually multiple times before finally pressing the power button to reset the alarm.
I'm still amazed whenever I get up at the toughness of this little clock.
Oh yes I loved the Sonic 2 music. Sonic 3 was good as well, but I remember I would use the debug code to go to the soundtrack screen and I'd just play the scores over and over because I like them so much. I did think that mystic cave zone was probably the best for me although I also really liked the Dr. Robotnik boss battle song.
It was one of his motivations in seeking natural explanations for behavior of animals.
That doesn't seem to make sense. The following is based on my understanding of the religion which I think is consistent with any that believe the words of the Bible. Individual beliefs may vary
Animals aren't governed by the moral guidlines that God placed on Humans. Animals do not go to heaven or hell. Animals where designed to be the dominion of humans. They have no consciousness or free will. They do what they are programmed to do and if that involves killing other creatures then there is no moral implication to that unless humans use them as a tool to kill other humans. I guess there's other grayer areas about killing God's creatures needlessly as wasting a God given blessing is bad etc. etc., but I don't know about that. My issue is that I don't see how animals killing animals can possibly seen as a way to justify they are evolved vs. created (based on text of the Bible).
'The brain is very parallel. There's lots of things going on at once,'
I have a bit of an issue with that statement. I guess in a way it is true that the brain does multiple things simultaneously such as balancing the body and chewing gum;), but any article on multitasking will tend to point out that the brain isn't very good at processing higher functions simultaneously. I guess the main goal may not be to simultaneously process multiple images, but to quickly process a single image (which the brain is good at) based on the content rather than the meta-data associated with it.
Yes! I've got a brand new idea. Why don't they kill off a main character! That is always exciting and rarely done with this type of franchise. That should provide some fresh experiences for trek fans out there...
Wait... What?! You are joking right? I must have forgot my sense of humor today because I don't quite understand. "Blockbuster" has origins long before the rental store was conceived. Actually it existed before movies! I don't see how the use of the word has any correlation to the store at all in this case!
After seeing this article, I took a closer look at my GMail interface (the contacts part). I did notice I've been running the updated version this whole time! I didn't even realize it. It's pretty subtle if you just look at your inbox all day like I often do. The new contacts is kind of nice even though I haven't had much time to explore it. However, in just a few minutes of clicking things I did manage to break the interface running in Firefox. After clicking from Drafts to Contacts, the interface just got "stuck". I now can't go back to my inbox or any other subsection and my contacts aren't showing up. A complete refresh though fixed that. Anyway, I look forward to picking through the new tweaks to the interface.
Maybe I'm old fashioned, maybe I'm just a visual person, but I love when I look at a game and go "Whoa!" because of the visual effects. I've played the Wii and it is fun, but I still don't see why everyone is downplaying the graphic limitations and claiming the gameplay is so much better. I don't think I'm a hardcore gamer, but I can still look forward to coming home after work and playing my 360. The Wii only get's picked up when I want to challenge someone with Wii sports. But even as a social gaming console, I would much prefer to play Halo, Guitar Hero, GOW, and pretty soon I'd like to try Viva Pinata party animals for the some more casual group games. So really, the Wii doesn't really offer anything I can't get on my 360. Thankfully the reverse is not true as I can daily sit in front of my somewhat modest HDTV and be impressed with the visuals.
Is there multiple computers in the household? I imagine it's possible to get a very cheap box and use it as a domain controller then give the kid a user and password to log into the domain then restrict the crap out of them. Of course this doesn't filter websites I guess, but maybe it will help in other areas such as whether they can delete their history files, open certain programs, etc.
I don't have too much experience in this, but it seems there may be an option here somewhere.
I think they need to add the Sony CD so that high quality sound and video can be played on the console. Then they can add the PS32X to increase the processing power. Then they can announce that game development for both accessories will halt in about a year after the release and you will be stuck for decades with a monster created of multiple esoteric parts and expansions that completely hide the original machine.
I'm going to go play some games on my Sega Genesis/32X/CD. Ah the simple days when a console was a console.

Imagine swimming in a pool of blood. This is not a metaphor. GOW2 will go there.

Apparently though you have all day to post on Slashdot.

You can't handle a new Morbo! All humans are vermin in the eyes of Morbo!
