If you work for the IRS and you make a mistake on an Audit. Are you as an IRS agent responsible for making up the money in the mistake or do you get to take home the extra money (depending on which way the error was made)? If you want this type of policy for one type of employee you must make sure it applies to all others.
I am pretty sure your employer is 100% responsible for the employee's actions while they are working. Mind you the Employer has the right to fire the employee.
Just like a friend of mine who was traveling in a company car for work and hit a deer. The employer wanted him to pay 100% of the cost to fix the nearly totaled car. After a bit he refused to pay - which was with in his legal right his lawyers told him. Shortly after his was fired. Which the company was legally allowed to do. Sadly in the province in which he worked there is relatively no protection from wrong full dismissal and it is virtually impossible to prove.
If you try to make programer legally responsible (like doctors) you need to increase the wages so they can afford insurance (like doctors). I am sure companies would love to pay programmers $300,000 - $500,000+ a year.
Under the home taping act, and the precedent of the Betamax Supreme court decision I am able to record what ever I like to watch when ever I like (time shifting). As indicated in earlier posts about the 'viewing' window of a recorded show on a DVR (TiVo) they want the 'viewing' window to be restricted (maybe two weeks?). I know on a recent recorded sporting event I had tons of warnings about not being able to view the 'restricted context' - a quick conversion to different video format and back removed all restrictions. It is not the business of DVR manufacture or broad casters to interrupt or enforce the will of a content maker. The consumer's rights under the doctrines of fair use, and home taping act are what TV recording is based upon. To cave in on the request of a broadcaster flag is to violate the precedence of the courts will and my rights, this is a terrible injustice. All they are trying to do is get into law what the courts told them they could not do a decade before.
1) Stop people from using a easy, likeable, means to legally buy music. 2) Force people to seek other sources of music... most likely illegally. 3) ???? 4) Profit
It is like Oil Company's demanding a share of all gas powered vehicles. As with out gas the vehicles would not run.
The same linkage between music sales and ipods can be made for vehicles and gas.
Maybe the record company needs to be hit with a racketeering charge or two before they smarten up. After all they are acting like a criminal organization.
The movie had focus groups and followed the hollywood formula to make it a hit. Based on the focus groups and the 'geek' factor of Star Wars the Hollywood executives knew with 100% of their own certainty that it would make over $500 million. Since that did not happen when applying the focus groups and Hollywood accounting methodology formula that difference must be due to piracy. Hollywood logic says so. Just because any statistics and marketing major knows you can not guarantee the results based upon a focus group does not mean anything in the well based movie making machine formula.
So I am afraid to tell you that you are wrong. Yup it must be Pirates!/Sarcasm off
Good to see Microsoft is still Innovative. Surprising for such monolithic company to still have new and fresh ideas. You would think a large company, like Microsoft, would use it position to exert pressure to adopt their services.
What exactly are you buying when you purchase a music CD? Is it a license to listen to the contents? Or are you buying a lease of the CD to be using only in an approved player?
I wish they would legally tell me what I am buying so I know exactly what I can do with the Music and what they are responsible for as well.
Having my tax dollars pay for the enforcement of what is a civil action (copyright enforcement) is just plain crazy. Especially, when I, as a tax payer, do not receive any tax refunds when I do not violate the copyright. Out of the 284 CDs I own I do not own a single CD player except the one in my computer - I use the FM transmitter on the iPod to list to them in my car. Expecting me to purchase a different player is cause for a kick in the nuts.
Why not insert a visibly hidden serial number to the film. This serial number could be applied to all releases of the film (pre-theaters reviews one, etc). A unique serial number for each real.
If a pirated moved if found just go to the point in the film where the hidden serial number is located. Then track back you had access to that film. If a theater then threaten not to allow them access to your films any more and sue them for damages for allowing the piracy. If it is a pre-release reviewer edition the same actions can be taken against them.
How hard would it be to just add a serial number to 10 frames here and 10 frames there? Hidden in the back ground somewhere. In stead of just a number it could a colour or the insertion of a special object (IE: Green coffe cup of a specific style.)
I do not think the studios want to really know where the piracy is really come from - their own staff!
That right! It the RIAA wishes to copy-protect the order of two or more words found in one of their protected works! Also added to the list of word they with to have copy protect on are: "I", "dream", "of", "a", "Free", "future", "&", "World", "peace".
Does NASA plan to re-use any of the launching vehicles in Space? For example the shielding around the main capsule appears to just fall way to burn up in the atmosphere. At the cost to get things into orbit why not keep those clam shells around to use as a raw material for building things in space or on the moon. I am sure some creative design could be developed to re-use them in a meaning full way.
So when they are running really late what should I/they do? At least one doctor is really nice for us. They phoned us and said the doctor was running 4 hours late. This put our appointment at 7:30 PM. It was really nice they phone and warned us. We got in at 7:25 PM to see the doctor. I have been to other doctor and sat waiting for 6 hours! That is not spending extra time with other patients it is that they went on an emergency call. I would have like to have been told that they are on an emergency and to come check back in an hour. You know how much fun it is to sit in a doctor's office waiting for 6 hours!
I think some doctors need to develop some customer relationship skills. Treat me well (as a customer) and I will return and use your services again... other wise I go else where and tell others of my bad experiences (and you will lose future customers). Too bad most doctors are so busy they do no care about how they treat their patients (customers) as they have very little or no choice in the matter.
Tell me BHB will take anything less then the full blown version at inflated prices. Microsoft is playing the Boss's ego. Telling them you could have the small limited version but for just $100 more you get the full super deluxe version and the envy of the geeks. (IE you can buy the small dick or the large one)
I had set up a computer in the basement furnace room and tried to get a wireless connection to it. It never worked 100% of the time. I tried the internet over the power line. Set up a connection from my office upstairs to the basement and presto an instant connection. I was so impressed with how easy it was to install. took me less than 5 minutes and that includes the walk from upstairs all the way down to the furnace room.
I use the computer as a file server for MP3 and other old files that I want to have access to at various locations around the house.
I do have power line filters and UPS on both ends of the Internet over the power line adaptor with drops the transfer rate to about 5-6 megs a second. With out the power line filters and UPS I was easily getting 10-11 Megs a second. I am not transferring 100's of Megs at a time.
I am impressed with the technology and was impressed how flawlessly and seamlessly it works. Given how poorly people set up a wireless router for their home I would rather have them set up a simple internet of the power line for their home. It can be a tad bit more secure.
The guy took my credit card information when I order up one of these super laptop!
When you order make sure you have your social security number, birth date, maiden name, banking info and pin handy. They need all that info so you can pass the tight security screening process to buy one of these things.
Order now! I can hardly wait the 4-8 weeks till I get mine. Maybe Windows will work really fast!
They did Captain America already... It is really crapy... try to find it at your video store and make sure to pick up a couple of cases of beer to what it with (you will need it!). Marvel (the cosmetic company, owners of marvel comics at the time) had too much control and as a result it sucked.
They need to sell the rights to someone who can make it good. IE Spiderman, X-men. Or even the forgetable Hulk which I am sure made money.
While working at one place the PHB went on and on about a new IT person they hired. All sorts of academic awards, top in the class, etc.
The first day they sat in front of the computer and they said - "How do you turn on the computer?"
Apparently they never had a home computer and the computer's in the school's labs where always on.
Nice enough person but very limited in the IT knowledge area. Anything outside the text book knowledge base and they where lost. Small little issues would require them days of research to find the solution as it was something they had not just covered in a text book. Innovation and creative ideas where not there strong point.
I find that in computer programming you are almost an artist; creating a logical flow of information. It is impossible for a text book to teach this sort creativity.
The best way for a PHB to see you not only have the technical knowledge but the passion for the field is to look at the job experiences, hobbies or clubs you belong to.
I remember seeing/reading about a blind guy who made clicks and sounds and then navigates the world.
The part that impressed me is that while walking down the street he could tell what vehicles where parked on the road... as he walk he said car, car, truck, car, van, red car. (Last one being a joke on his part). He claimed that he noticed that the echoing sound from his walking stick changed slightly. After much trail and error he was able to make a clicking noise and then deciphered the returning echoed sound. I seem to recall that he is teaching his technique to blind people.
Vegans are utterly nasty individuals. All they want to do is pull poor helpless living plants from the warm embraces of Mother Earth. How do you think the poor vegetables feel? To top it off these Vegan's often eat the stuff raw. Imagine eating a raw carrot in the park... how to you think all the other plants feels after see a fellow plant eaten raw right in front of them. I bet these bastards also walk on poor helpless grass.
Become a 'natural forager' eating only items that have naturally fallen from a tree or have naturally died!
I will never buy a device that will self-destruct. I have enough trouble keeping the Windows Box from self-destructing.
If Internet connection is required to validate a movie what is stopping them from logging all sorts of user info. IE the length of time I freeze frame on someone's naughty bits. Or the number of times I replay a scene.
I doubt anyone would want a log indicating that out of the 100's of movies I (temporary leased in their minds) how many porno's I watched and how many times.
Next thing you know the government will be recording which books I buy or check out at the library.
Why not just tax everyone 100% of their income and provide everything they need for life as seen buy a government regulated board. The collected tax revenue can be split up amongst the providers. Eventually big business can convince the rest of the world to work like this and we have truly free society with no money, no dreams, no choice, no war. It is easy to imagine!
Time is time. The debate went on here too. It was comment that it would allow 1 more hour in the evening to play golf. I suggested just getting up an hour earier and leaving work and a hour earier. That way you do do not screw up everyone elses clocks. They looked at me all confused and said it would be law and everyone would get that extra hour of day light. My comment was: "When did the government get the power to control rotation of earth?"
No matter how you cut it their is just a specific amount of day light for a given day. Instead of screwing with everyone's clocks so you can get game of golf in just leave the clocks the same all year round. The individual can work their schedule out so they can benefit for the day light. Next time I will put his golf clubs where the sun does not shine!
Hell as a computer person I usally go 3-4 months at time in (especially in the winter) with out seeing day light at all!
I loved using the pay as you go accounts in UK. It was easy and cheap. I loved not needing to pay for incoming calls. I loved the billed by the second feature.
Comparing the cost and you get about twice the value in the UK as in North America on Pay as you go plans.
I wish our cell phone provides would get their heads out of their asses and see what customer really want and like!
Long ago I purchased the OS for the Home computer. I would be luckily to find the box. I would never be able to find a receipt. How can they expect proof?
I understand the idea of proof of ownership before you are allowed updates. But to try to enforce it now is not reasonable. I could see on the next release big flashing signs saying keep your receipts and box as you will need it as proof of your purchase.
What about second hand computers that are sold with the OS installed on it but no disk or box is given? The previous owner just transferred the license to the new owner.
Sorry,
If you expose a child to blood and gore you could be held responsible for contributing to the corruption of a minor.
Much like if you give a kid a beer you are contributing to the corruption of a minor.
Not really socially acceptable (which what law is -- it defines the norms and social behavior of our society).
If you work for the IRS and you make a mistake on an Audit. Are you as an IRS agent responsible for making up the money in the mistake or do you get to take home the extra money (depending on which way the error was made)?
