  5. I wasn't comparing Quake3 and Halo2 on The Path to AAA Games · · Score: 2, Insightful

    #1 I wasn't comparing Quake3 to Halo2. I think they're both very far from perfect.

You claim ladder wasn't around in Quake3's days. Ladder play was in Starcraft, which was out about the same time. And so far, no game has done ladder play correctly. Theres always seems to be a flaw in matchmaking, or the rating system in general. Its funny too because you can chart a skill curve based on ladder ratings if done correctly. Most game manufacturers don't want the depth of skill in their game to be charted because there is very little depth. A well done game would have a properly done ladder system, and deep combat depth. So far no game has really got very far into combat depth, and I'd imagine its the next big thing.

Back in 95, I was touting vehicles as the next big thing in FPS, and it took them about 10 years. I suppose it will take more than 10-30 years before you get skillfully balanced FPS combat if no one realizes it. Before you get all huffy, think about it. If you want to get realistic, you start getting into situations where one shot kills someone. If you want to head more into fantasy, you can balance guns more, and even have counters for different guns. When you want balanced PK, you should focus on guns for different situations. And in addition to guns, you could have defensive devices of all sorts.

When someone calls a game 'perfect', it grates on my nerves because theres such a long way to go before someone puts together a perfect game. And here's another hint,"If your game is even close to perfect, then everyone is going to want to play it." I'm a hardcore gamer, and Quake3 to me is nothing more than a click and kill twtich fest that's far from perfect.

I'm about as hardcore video game player as they come. I don't play Quake 3, because it doesn't have a ladder/ranking system like Halo 2. Also the weapons are imbalanced. No one is going to run around with the gatling nail gun when they can just pick up a rocket launcher or rail gun. I don't play it because of these reasons. Perfect my ass.

  14. I'm all about action MMOGS on NCSoft Launches New Game Sites · · Score: 1, Interesting

I'll definately have to pick up Tabula Rasa. Action MMOGS are definately the wave of the future. I played Planetside. And while most RPG ethusiasts agree that the grind to get to maximum level should take several months to years, Planetside believed that the optimal play time should be one day. The funny thing about action MMOGS is that you can make the grind longer because people won't notice it because they'll be too busy playing a game.

The only fun thing about Planetside was I was playing it at the beginning when everyone was new. I found a killer strat early on and abused it. One of the funnest things to do in MMOGS is to abuse an overpowered strategy in PK before anyone finds out about it. Basically I'd have runs in a tank where I'd kill up to 50 people before I was killed. And when I wanted to get really cheap, I'd camp a respawn booth with a super shotgun. They respawn and boom they're dead. Pretty cheap stuff, but good for a few thrills.

But the xbox360 promises to be better than a flying car, how can you keep your dollars in your pocket with so much hype? Yeah. I wish they'd shut up about it too. The only hype I'll buy into is if some game comes out that everyone thinks is great, then I'll be interested in buying that game. I've seen enough advanced hype in my life to know ahead of time that sea monkeys aren't a space age replacement for a normal pet. It insults my intelligence for someone to claim a new console is going to change the gaming landscape. I remember when the Super Famicom was being hyped back in late 80's early 90's(what later was called the Super Nintendo). When it came out, the graphics was better, but it didn't seem like it was more fun than nintendo 8 bit.

  16. LOL, they have no clue on RFID Tags for Digital Rights Management · · Score: 4, Interesting

They shouldn't spend more than 5$ on copy protection, as thats what it costs to rent a movie at blockbuster, and create infinate copies.

If they really cared, they could slap together an encryption technique in an hour, and have an internet delivery system so you could watch movies on your computer. It doesn't matter that the encryption system is crappy, it'd take longer to break than it would to simply pirate the movie in conventional ways. And if the crack becomes widespread, spend 1 more hour and change the system around.

So in conclusion, they could create a content delivery system and boost their revenue on movies with code from a system that could take a good programmer less than a month to develop.

I like to write novels about this sort of stuff, but I'll limit it to just one extra point. The reason you normally have nostalgia is that a game is the first to bring the new genre in. I remember Super Mario Bros as addicting at first play, but future platformers weren't as fun because I've already seen them in another form. Newer games deliver better game play that old school video games for the most part, but old video games delivered it for the first time.
