  1. Re:I think "admits" is probably the wrong word. on North Korea Admits to Having Nuclear Weapons · · Score: 1

Back in the day, wars were fought for territory. The invading country benefited not only from the resources on the land, but also forced labor of the native people as well as the prestige of expanding the empire.

During the 19th and 20th centuries, due to social theorists, economic trends and costly revolutions, empires no longer seemed worthwhile. However, the nations who had colonies remained close to those governments and still reaped alot of benefits from their former colonies.

I think that because of global economics and other factors, powerful nations no longer colonize or occupy weaker ones, but rather install and maintain friendly governments a nation such as the USA, its citizens, and corporations can benefit from cheaper resources, including labor.

I'm surprised no one mentioned this game. I assume it's because it was released about the same time as Halo2, GTA:SA, Half-Life 2, WoW.

I expected MGS3 to be a run-of-the-mill sequel. I was wrong. It's excellent. The enemy AI and gameplay have been vastly improved. The final boss battle scene is beautiful, and there's a boss battle that takes place over a huge area.

On top of this, the game story is excellent. Seriously, check this game out.

  4. SBC = Poor Customer Service on SBC Might Buy AT&T · · Score: 1

SBC has history of poor customer service. The following two issues are examples of my experience with SBC.

    1. The short story is that SBC owed me ~$100 bucks. Over the course of a year, I spoke to several SBC reps over the phone to get back my money. Each time I was told a check would be cut and/or someone would call me back about the issue. I finally decided to sit down and state the facts in a well organized letter to SBC Customer Service (with legal overtones) with attached "exhibits". Lo and Behold, the day SBC receives the letter I get a call (apology) directly from its Executive Office. Within a week of this conversation I have my money.

    2. SBC DSL tech support closed my trouble ticket without contacting me as they said they would. But more importantly, they closed the ticket without fixing my problem.

EA and Sega have had sour relations starting sometime during the days of the Sega Genesis (or was it the Sega Saturn). In any case, at some point EA refused to make games for any Sega console ever again.

Perhaps someone with more knowledge on the subject would care to elaborate. I want to say it had something to do with the Sega developing its Sega Sports brand, but that may be incorrect.

The companies that want to compete with the ipod need to add more features. Personally, I'd like to see some Sony portable minidisc features added to an MP3 player such as:

Detachable battery pack that allows one to use regular AA batteries (ie: you forgot to recharge the ipod last night)

Backlit remote which displays music title, battery life. The remote would also allow one to switch albums.

Mic input to record concerts and lectures

I don't purchase games based on the major website reviews or reviews from any magzine publications. I use www.gamefaqs.com. Nearly every game on that site has a review section where members submit reviews.

A week or two after a game's release, I can get a pretty good distribution of reviews on a 10-point scale. If 90% of the reviewers give the game an 8, 9, or 10, I can usually assume the game is quality.

However, such high scores can be a result of fanboy-ism...which is why I don't read more than two 10/10 reviews. I usually read, a 9/10, a few 7/10 or 8/10 and a few If I deem a game worthy of my consideration, I'll visit sources to obtain a free trial and I'll buy the game if it's good.

  12. Re:Tired of sequels... on Metal Gear Solid 4 Confirmed · · Score: 1

Consumers want sequels, that's why developers make them. Popular and enterntaining (read: good) sequels consistently sell well.

On the otherhand rehashed, rushed and shoddy sequels sell poorly (See Eidos games).

Sega consistently released original titles and didn't remake alot of older franchises that they could have such as Golden Axe, Streets of Rage, etc. Sega is now merged with Sammy.

Developers need to make sequels to help ensure that they can stay in business. They'll also throw out some original titles, which is essentially a risk.

TV:Yesterday I bought a Hauppauge PVR-150 $99 - $20 MIR)at MicroCenter. I tried out SageTV which downloads my local cable company's TV guide and gives me PVR capabilities.

Music:I use iTunes to organize my music. I have some decent PC speakers, but if I want to listen to some music in the living room, I connect an RCA cable from the line-out jack on my laptop to my stereo system. I share the music wirelessly using iTunes on my PCs with my wireless router.

Of course my PC organizes photos and video files, e-books, etc. In short, my PC handles home media to my satisfaction, saves space, and allows me to modify it to my taste.

When the gov't sets the Threshold Limit Value (TLV) of a substance to a certain level, it does not necessarily mean that exposure to that substance below that level is safe.

I'm no expert, but I'm familiar with US gov't regulations on occupational exposure to some toxic substances. I've seen situations where the gov't sets a TLV and assures the population that "this is still well below safe concentrations." Yet, over the course of decades the TLV is gradually reduced several times as TLV levels previously thought to be safe are proven unsafe.

This typically happens when the effects of a harmful substancet don't surface for several years. I think the gradual reduction of TLVs is due partly to huge industries that know that TLV reductions increase their cost of business.

My parents never restricted me from watching TV when I was growing up. Today, I probably "watch" about 3hrs of TV per week, and that's only because I'd be in the living room while my roommate watches TV. The interesting thing, is that my roommate's parents restricted her from watching TV when she was growing up, but today, she watches alot of TV. This is also true of people I've met who had similar restrictions or people who did not have cable TV when they were young. My point is that I haven't seen that placing these kind of no-TV restrictions actually work. I find that a person who watches alot of TV are not necessarily TV junkies and given an alternative activity that is interesting to that person, would rather engage in that activity. I'm no parent, but I think if you allow your kid the opportunity to explore other activities, the kid will limit his own TV watching.
