Everything you said I agree with. Except the "Games look almost as good as on the PS3" part. That's spoken like someone who hasn't seen either the 360 or the PS3 in action. I've seen a huge difference between games even on an SDTV.
"Gears of War doesn't stand out? I can't even play any other shooter, not even Halo, after playing it."
Right. So I guess you're not buying Halo 3 when it comes out? I agree Gears of War is a great game, but I don't cringe playing my other shooters after playing Gears of War. They're all fun in their own right.
That's just his point I think. The Wii is a great console for a "bring it over and we'll have a blast" moment, but really if you're playing it all the time (or just a lot) I think that the novelty DOES wear off. It seems to be much more of a do stuff with people system. Not that that's a bad thing, but your friends asking you to bring your Wii to their Christmas Party for an hour or two of play is different from playing it for weeks.
Available now, or available later? We all know that unless Sony drops the ball they're getting the Final Fantasy's, the Metal Gear Solids, and the Devil May Crys. They very well could drop the ball and all the amazing exclusives they've secured for their previous consoles will go flying to the 360, but I'm not counting on it. Honestly I think it's impossible to have a very strong opinion on the PS3 until it's been released for a year.
Considering you're a self professed hardcore gamer, you should know that the PS3 DOES have stuff going for it other than just Blu-ray.
If you had actually read the thread, you'd realize he had already corrected his mistake in a reply. I normally don't mind multiple people correcting someone, but you need to calm down when someone makes a simple mistake before calling them stupid. With worthless posts like these, remind me why you still have good karma?
Heh, that's funny, because I've heard the employees telling people at the local EB that both the PS3 AND the Wii only have a 90 day warranty when you buy them (despite them both having 1 year warranties). I guess it's just another deceptive pitch to sell you their 1 year. Now that the XBOX360 is officially a 1 year as well, I wonder whether they'll stop?
No, I'm correcting the parent. Bungie is owned by Microsoft, of course they'll say wonders about the 360. Insomniac is not owned by Sony, therefore the comparison wasn't fair. Stop sticking words in my mouth.
That's just it. There is no standard. I could easily say "TOSHIBA SUCKS because they are trying to force another proprietary format down consumers necks instead of being smart enough to join the standard" and it would be the same. The fact is, both companies suck because they couldn't come to an agreement so are bringing the war to the consumers. It's pitiful, but it's no more Sony's fault than it is Toshiba's.
Besides, Blu-ray is better technologically. The whole reason we need high def formats is because DVDs aren't big enough right? Blu-ray has much greater space potential...why aren't you mad at Toshiba for conceding their design to the superior format?
The problem with this is that consoles generally change hardware architectures with every generation (the Wii excluded, it uses the same architecture as the GameCube). Sony solved this problem by throwing in the old PS1/PS2 hardware in their new console. Microsoft solved this problem by using a software emulator, but unfortunately it's not foolproof and only works for specific games. I'm sure Nintendo has to retool (or at least test) the games that are released via virtual console so that they can run on the Wii (using some kind of emulator I would assume).
Apple was smart and created a software emulation environment for their big architecture jump (PPC to x86) but applications definitely don't run at full speed within Rosetta. When you're talking about games, you need them running at least at the speed they ran on the old hardware.
As for emulators playing old games on new computers, I know that PS2 emulators are just getting up to playable speeds on relatively nice hardware, with only certain compatible games. I don't know what the status is on XBox and Gamecube emulators but I'm sure they're around the same. Limited game support requiring pretty decent hardware. Old consoles, sure, that's why Nintendo can do the Virtual Console, and why Sony can release PlayStation games to be played on PSP. But the consoles from the immediate previous generation are definitely trickier.
As an owner of a PS3 with Linux installed, the only thing that's missing is wireless support. Wired Ethernet works flawlessly, now lets see some wireless drivers!
I can't answer that question, unfortunately. Seems like a big shortcoming which can hopefully be fixed with a firmware patch. The assertion that the console doesn't support 1080i is ridiculous though, because it does, it just doesn't upscale. I was trying to make sure that fact was clear.
"Sony has updated the PS3's firmware to 1.30 in an effort to take care of the much-complained-about resolution scaling issues."
This is something I don't understand. I have never seen a statment from Sony saying that's what the patch was for, all I've seen is some notes on what the patch DID fix on their website. The only places I've seen these comments are sites like Ars Technica and Kotaku, where they assumed that's what the patch was for. Complaining that it doesn't do what you assumed (wrongly) it would fix is like saying a PBJ sandwich sucks because it doesn't have ham.
Of course, if someone has a source to Sony stating they fix the issue, I'll be sure to bite my tongue off next time.
Insomniac is an independant. They've so far chosen to release to playstation and be published by Sony, but in an interview I read with Ted Price they are still completely independant from Sony.
This is a very good question. What does this system mean for support people? When their results are basically solving problems people have with computers and equipment, wouldn't this mean they'll have to stick around more to accomodate those who decide to be the early or late workers to achieve results?
This is FUD. It's just as easy to use the PS3 with component cables and optical audio and never touch the HDMI port. On the other hand, you might be glad you had SOME alternative when bullshit movie studios start turning on that ICT flag. That's when the XBox360 HD-DVD addon leaves you nowhere to run.
I guess you could start boycotting the High-Def formats then, but if you're going to boycott them due to the DRM, why not start now?
Um, the PS3 supports 1080i just fine. It won't UPSCALE to 1080i from a lower resolution if your TV is too crappy to support it. So it goes for the next best thing, 480p. Make sense?
The PS3 supports them all. It's the old TVs that don't support 720p.
"but I doubt Sony goes through the trouble of enhancing last-gen games on the ps3."
Honestly, I'm wondering why this isn't a feature. I own a PS3, and although I knew PS2 games would not be enhanced in any way, it's still disappointing. The only console that I know that does improve it's last generation games is the Wii. I'm thinking it must have something to do with the fact that while the XBox360 and PS3 are based on different architectures than their previous gen systems (the PS3 even uses the old PS2 hardware for backwards compatibility), the Wii uses the same architecture as the gamecube, just better, so it can just enable better AA and stuff in the old games.
That's the only reason I can think of, does anyone else know why? I don't mind the graphics on the PS2 games, but like the parent stated, the lack of AA does get really distracting. Especially on a HDTV.
That's surprising..I had always assumed UT2007 would be 360, PS3, and PC. I guess their 360 'division' was too focused on Gears of War? That's the only reason I see why they would miss the 360 with UT.

Stop calling it an FPS people! Gears is not an FPS! It's a third person shooter.
I'm going to have to say that I think you're making them a bit better than they are. I had a PS3 and Wii hooked up to the same TV here, and Zelda, while still good in its own right as a Zelda title, couldn't compare to anything the PS3 pumped out of it. The leap is much bigger than PS2 -> GC/Xbox, and I think in a few years the gap is going to widen even more.
MotorStorm perhaps. As one of those rare PS3 owners, I can tell you I wasn't really excited about this game until I actually played it. It's hella fun, even with just one level available in the demo. I'm picking it up when it launches. And yes, in another post above I also raved about MotorStorm, mainly just because I'm so surprised at how much it's grabbed my attention now that I've seen it in action. Please don't mistake that for astroturfing.
I hear you man. I got a 60 GB through pre-order and it has been everything I was hoping for. The MotorStorm demo is especially impressive, and it's managed to convince me to fork over my cash for it when it's released.
Could I have gotten HD Gaming for cheaper with the 360? Sure. But by no means do I regret my PS3 purchase, and I'm having a hell of a time playing Resistance.

The remakes yeah, but Sony can't afford to lose the new ones. (and I don't mean the spinoffs, I just mean the next "true" FFs)

But...there ARE lots of hardware failures, and they DO overheat. Of course, lots is subjective, so really there's nothing you can do about it.
