About two years ago I sat in a cell phone 'store' going over the whole printed contract. Curiously, they couldn't provide it to me over the counter and had to have it faxed over from the mother ship. Anyway, I started red lining parts of the contract. They actually started to laugh at me. Yes, I know there was no way they had any sort of agency to accept my changes, but I was trying to make a point over a service issue at renewal time.

On a serious note, next time you hit walls like that, simply engage your state's Attorney General office. No, they aren't going to sue for you, but they do track these sorts of things and contract law is still contract law. Just because someone says they can do it, doesn't mean they really can. A real life business style letter sent the company with a CC to the AG can work wonders. Ignore the storefront drones and aim at corporate.

Neither of us understand why they have a bad reputation.

Very limited coverage area compared to competitors. Sad international support. oversubscribed infrastructure (yea, they all do it, but Sprint seems to take it to a new level). I could keep going beyond two cents...

However, after all that, they have acceptable customer service (for cell providers).

If they work for you, then great.

So, the kid should spend 2 years minimum in jail for being immature? Where is the freedom to explore in your world? The range of human conduct is not constrained to rainbow surfing and unicorn hugging. Adolescence is the epitome of exploration. Consequences should match the conduct, not be emotionally charged.

Your argument is in essence a declaration that punks should go to jail because your little brother feels bad.

Wouldn't an _administrative_ fine of say, 1500 bucks, to the parents send the appropriate signal that society is not going to tolerate that kind of conduct? And why expel the kid? You can make his life much more hellish by meting out punishment in school.

Sears, Roebuck salespeople are on commission, at least in the appliances and electronics departments. If anything, I think you get better service from them, but they definitely try to steer you to their highest-margin stuff.

They have to at least TRY to upsell. In fact, it is good salesmanship to start with the high end. You do not want to offend people by assuming they can only afford the wash tub and clothesline model.

Being an educated consumer does not stop with computers. The consumer should know the rules by their 18th birthday. You want to buy, they want to sell; when you meet in the middle a deal is struck. Remember, the hallmark of a successful negotiation is when both parties walk away slightly unhappy.

I sold paint for a number of years on partial commission (don't ask what that means). We had a very moral knowledgeable staff of 4. Our numbers were high and steady even in the CY first quarter simply because of repeat business (few people paint in the Winter, but more than you'd think). We would actually inform our big buyers when pending sales/promotions were occurring. Often we would get very large orders that we could place ahead of time to have stock on hand for the promotion--they didn't have ERP systems 25 years ago. ;)
