Are these kids skipping American History/Civics and moving into Psychology and Sociology courses instead?
I don't understand the reference to psychology and sociology. If you're saying that people are less informed if they study these types of courses (or that this area of study is pointless), you should keep in mind that this is essentially a sociological study.
But the ambiguity is on purpose, no? Being 'free as in beer' helps toward the ultimate cause of liberty. Having one word to reference both interrelated concepts of 'free software' is nice and succinct. Why would he change it?
After switching to Linux, my main reason for dual-booting into Windows was Photoshop. After some gentle urging from my OSS enthusiast roomie, I started to use Gimp more extensively. Now I use it almost daily. A while ago, i tried using Photoshop and was completely mystified by the UI. People fail to understand that Photoshop's UI is not any more intuitive than The Gimp's (or only marginally so) and that it all boils down to personal experience.
Last year, while at school, I decided to reinstall XP a few times. My school has a policy of automatically disconnecting any infected computer. Before reinstalling, my network access was fine (i.e. no infection). But shortly after reinstalling each time, I found that my network access had been disabled due to infection. This happened at least twice. If having my ethernet cable plugged in while installing an OS is 'user error' then something is seriously wrong.
In reply to your first point, I think there's a difference between 10,000 people who choose to use an alternative product versus millions that accept what's provided with nearly every personal computer sold today. 10,000 people making conscious decisions are more powerful than millions of people simply using what's in front of them.
Well, I don't think I was attacking him for using Windows. I was only referring to the effect given off by the screenshots; that is, of some guy with lots of time on his hands who likes to tinker with stuff.
Obviously, Windows is the only reasonable choice for a modern gaming PC, but this man seems to have put so much time and careful thought into physically building this very personalized machine that I thought it a tad surprising that he wasn't also using the so-called 'Tinkerer's OS.' And again, the effect is only slightly lessened and I'm only a tad surprised. I never implied that he was being unreasonable.
I dunno. I don't think this has much in common with the cell phone feature explosion. While games/PDA features/etc on cell phones are intended for mass consumption, this is primarily a niche product for musician-types who want a new to express themselves. I think it's pretty cool.
OBEY
More proof that NASA is filled with these guys.

You must be suffering from Liberal Outrage Fatigue.
I've got it too.
at least one of the comments will include the acronym UMIA
Piracy is a pretty strong word for this particular act. I like to think of it as Distributed Tivo.
He is a sick man. He is a spiteful man. He is an unattractive man. I think his liver hurts.

The government calls it the 'army', but a more alarmist name would be.. The Killbot Factory!
The Amazon Commercial Suborbital Spaceship?
There's actually a Simpsons reference to this that I never got until now.
"Avenge my death, Kimba -- I mean, Simba"

I would suggest 'Freedom Software'. That way you can please both 'free as in libre' proponents and anti-French Bushies.

Impressive as it is (and it is impressive), the effect is slightly lessened by the Windows screenshot. It just seems so... contradictory.

Unless you got power!
Lawrence Lessig wrote about that in his book Free Culture (freely available online). He talks about it on Page 67 and shows his references on Page 317
Well, to be fair, Gmail is still in 'beta'. This is the kind of thing beta is for, folks.
