Impressive Half Life 2 Case Mod

risinganger writes "Well it didn't take somebody too long to get all enthused over Half-Life 2 (hardly surprising?) and so they have decided to present their lovingly created case mod based on the game. " Very cool looking fake rust thing.

      That one isn't a dupe. The guy mad 2 cases. The first was > 6 months ago and was on the front page. Valve then commisioned him to do another HL2 mod for their official demo machine. That post from a month ago is that second case, and so I this one I think.

      Regardless, this story is a dupe, and a bad one since themonth old one had all the step by step comentary.

      I only had to replace all the hardware inside. New motherboard with a faster processor, some RAM and a brand new videocard to make it a HL2 box.

    ...so it's an old link, but he's added a new addition to celebrate the release of HL2 - the case has a new motor built in that randomly vibrates the case, causing it so shudder and shake at intervals throughout the game. Now that's the real HL experience :) [...in all fairness, I've had no problems with the skipping bug...]

      Honestly not your fault. Slashdot's "search" option is anything but. I almost feel like the search component is a greasy shoeshiner and I need to slip it a $20 bill and wink at it so it really tells me where stuff is.

      I find it much easier to just use Google and even then I can't find stuff half the time. I mean look at my search for half-life 2 case mod yields results on SCO, The Sims, Groklaw... Yet only the most recent case story. Yes, I know, you have to play around and order by score and date etc. It still sucks.

      Number 2 and 3 generate lots of revenue and are therefore not wastes of time. Proof of number 2 generating lucrative money. Proof of number 3 are online ads.

      Number 1 could arguably be productive if you are practicing for tournaments where you can win tangible assets for being a good player.

      As for number 4 being a waste of time. We can see it didn't stop you from wasting yours and ours.

      If you'd read the article (as I did while he was building it) then you'd know that the damage on the mouse was done precisely to the areas where you don't touch it, to avoid this. Same for the keyboard. And both are covered in ClearCoat, a transparent "paint", so that the surface is not as rough as it looks.

      My Duke Nukem 3D case mod is still going strong though, with its 33Mhz '486, 8 megabyte ram, 50 megabyte harddisk and tseng ET4000 videocard.

      well, mine's not tucked under a desk, and to be certain, it definitely ain't pretty. i usually remove all plastic/sheet metal plates/coverings and just have the grey metal chassis with wires and cables hanging out all over the place.

      like you, though, i just can't see the point in these "circus computers," as i like to call them(as in "hey, nice computer. better get it back to the circus before they find out it's missing").

      It's not that I don't care about my visual environment; I live in a nice house, which I take care of. I drive a nice car. But these are things which are seen by people all the time. My computers, on the other hand, stay in my study and are rarely seen by anyone. They are there for the sole purpose of computing, not fancy desk decorations to be ooohd and aaahd at by all and sundry. Sorry, but I just think casemodding to that degree is pointless.

    Hey, down here, mod this one up. If you want a REAL HL2 mod, this is the Blackmesa 2 mod by the same guy. I believe this was a requisitioned mod from Valve, so this guy went all out to model it after real in-game models. I should note that parts 1, 2, and 3 for this mod are posted, and it's already been about a week since it was last on Bluesnews, so once again /. is behind the curve anyway.

      It took a lot of self control not to mod you as troll, but I'll stick to my policy of replying instead of moderating down.

      Do you really think it's unreasonable for an avid gamer to be running windows? Really?

      Should he be playing all of the latest and greatest games on Linux?

      Why attack him because of his very reasonable choice of operating system. Comments like this make Slashdot look like an extremist faction instead of a place for reasonable discussion.

      Well, I don't think I was attacking him for using Windows. I was only referring to the effect given off by the screenshots; that is, of some guy with lots of time on his hands who likes to tinker with stuff.

      Obviously, Windows is the only reasonable choice for a modern gaming PC, but this man seems to have put so much time and careful thought into physically building this very personalized machine that I thought it a tad surprising that he wasn't also using the so-called 'Tinkerer's OS.' And again, the effect is only slightly lessened and I'm only a tad surprised. I never implied that he was being unreasonable.

      I thought so myself... but I can't seem to find any sites or pictures w/ the HL1 mod. I searched Google and several mod sites, but could only find links to the black mesa (HL2) mod. Since this is very old news, I wonder if there was ever a HL1 mod.

      Does anyone have any evidence that this was the HL1 mod (if it ever existed) w/ a "2" added?

      As I type this... I feel pathetic... I mean who cares really?

    But here the design in the game has been transferred to the casing. When I looked at the green water in the glass, I thought, "I hope it serves as cooling also". And it did.

    With all the free time this guy has, it looks like he just got fired from CompUSA or something. I'm surprised that someone could actually do that without the paint making everything (keys, fans, buttons, etc.) stick.
