Yes I'm a powered computer user too! Electricity is a wonderful thing! ( I can use an abacus, but I prefer my power computer!)

I also know windows backwards...forwards, sideways, and when drunk once, upside down(that was FUN to fix before the foreman got back from lunch)! Yes, I have removed and replaced windows, framed walls and installed windows from scratch, I have even replaced the window panes!!!!

I was sure that you were a MS Windows user as soon as you said 'power computer user'....dead giveaway. I'm also sure you think that you know MS Windows OS backwards. Can you not go forwards?

I used to use MS Windows (Win98SE, and Win XP Pro SP2), and knew most of the tweaks and tricks to get a somewhat stable, secure, and quick PC going. I was, and still am popular to set up or build and set up gaming PC's for MS Windows users, but I switched to Ubuntu when MS started the whole WGA fiasco and declared my purchased retail copy of XP was pirated.
My experience with Kubuntu (ver 5.10) was that my graphics were screwed up running the live cd, but after install it was fine at 1024x768@60hZ on my NEC MultiSync 97F CRT monitor with an ATI 9550 256 MB AGP graphics card.

I'm now running Kubuntu 7.04 Feisty Fawn on the same machine, and would never think of going back to an MS Windows OS as my primary desktop.
On this same machine, I will admit to having it as a dual boot:
    default: Kubuntu 7.04
other: MS Windows 98SE...no NIC's installed (drivers)- no networking ability.

I'm still addicted to an old PS1 game called Front Mission III that I play on Win 98 in the old Connectix Virtual Game Staion software, and a couple of other Win 95-98 only games that I still like to play.

I will admit that ATI card support with linux sucks bigtime, but with an Intel onboard or notebook chip, Linux rocks! nVidia is getting there, but has a little to go...mostly just works for more mainstream PC's.

From your post I would guess that you have an ATI video card. To make it sort of work in Ubuntu, you need the command line to install and configure the drivers. I found all the solutions I needed on the Ubuntu FAQ's or forums online.

All joking aside, I might suggest that you toss in another hard drive into your Windows PC, install Ubuntu/Kubuntu 7.04 on the new drive and dual boot-very easy and straight forward during the install to do. This will enable you to get used to the differences, as there are some! You have to think a little differently sometimes than you are used to running Windows, but if you can get to the forums you will almost always find the solution, usually easy once you know.

I'm not too proud to admit that I found 'Linux for Dummies' helpful when I first switched from XP.

Where is the documentation on me incurring this debt? How did this happen without my knowledge? Did I sign something? Was I over 18 yrs. old to make it legal?("And our founding fathers actually had to ask for His help to finish the constitution.") How can this be legal, moral, or ethical?

Or is this debt just because you say so?

You should really try to keep your mystery magician in the sky and your supposed debt to yourself.

I have had no debt that you speak of, and cannot figure out how I could get in debt to someone that does not exist. Do you work for MS's marketing/sales dept.? That sounds like one of their licensing ploys.....Hmmm....

"And our founding fathers actually had to ask for His help to finish the constitution."

Had to? Can you document this?

Or is it more likely that some of them decided that asking for help from their deity would be a good idea. Had to? You presume too much, I think.

My wife is a christian(free will baptist-her father was a minister from graduating college until he finally retired last year...I can attest that some of the stories about preacher's daughters are well founded!), and I left the roman catholic version when I was 8 (1966) and went to zen, then a Japanese sect of Buddhism(derived from Zen and the Tao), but I respect her practice of religion because she does not presume it upon me, and does not contest my beliefs.

She is also a district mgr. (volunteer) of a nationwide substance abuse recovery organization (the anonymous nature of this organization would require me to kill you if I mentioned the name...[;-)]...) and uses her deity frequently while she wears her dist. mgr. hat, and she feels it works for her- I will not dispute or debate her about it...it is her business, not mine.

The reason for that last statement is that I beleive that spirituality/religion is a PERSONAL thing, not a communal thing.
I have no problems with my wife's beliefs, since she has none about mine. We don't preach to each other, or expect each other to follow each other's beliefs.

As a side note: her father (the aforementioned minister) and I get along really well and frequently have theological discussions that are both entertaining and sharing of knowledge, even though there are several points neither of us will concede, but those arew very few and far between.

Core2 was a bad example, rsmith-mac is right, but I understand your question.

What I seem to have observed, is it is advantageous for Intel to release this handful of chips at a very expensive top tier consumer market and hardware review sites to give press to the astounding benchmarks these chips enable, then create tiered markets to support the change over to the new, more efficient die. Thus you can get everything older at discount.

I like the fact that they (Intel and AMD) will sell me tail end 'this generation' processors (that respond real well to overclocking!) for relatively cheap, or if I have the budget, $400-800 USD will get me some really sweet CPU's, or I could go hog wild with the newest cutting edge for a premium.

Or, with my budget you have a P4 Prescott with 1GB PC 2700 RAM, and multi SATA and PATA HDD's, and an ATI 9550 256MB GPU and do the best you can with what you have. (3 more on the home net: Athlon XP 1800 w/ Win 98se for games, and Kubuntu Fiesty dual-boot for my stepdaughter, Intel P3 500 MGHz w/ dual boot win98se and WinXP Pro sp2 for my wife, and my file server- a P3 766 MGHz running CentOS5.

Oh, my P4 Prescott? Kubuntu Feisty all the way.

I can't convert my wife to *nix on her PC, but I can't keep her off of the games on my Kubuntu PC?!?!?!

The 16 yr. old stepdaughter does fine with Win98, WinXP, or Kubuntu- Firefox works the smae in all, as does OpenOffice.

The rest is easy to configure (and she does-AIM,etc...), and easy to adjust to.

This seems to have worked for Intel/AMD and Nvidia/ATI for the past several years- processors and graphics cards have become two VERY cut-throat markets, mostly to the benefit of the buyers....Rock On!

Now if the AMD/ATI merge gets some decent Linux drivers out for the ATI cards......
