They require a seperate computer with any web browser to control the user interface. But it doesn't have to be Windows.
More than likely they used a Windows machine when they ran the demo at NAB, but ANY machine with ANY browser can interface with it.

Well... To answer your question, the box has been up and running for about 3 years. But, I only use it as like a slave. That is, I remotely host some of my larger files from that box. And it's hidden on an obscure port. (My ISP blocks the usage of port 80.)
By all accounts, going through my logs... I've never had anything other than some people snooping around using their web browser to see if there are other pages to see... I've never seen any evidence of malicious activity.
Question... Why does it matter what distro I'm running? Apache is Apache, is it not? It's not like the software gives a crap if KDE is there or not. It cetainly shouldn't care that Mandrake is there at all...

I can take that advice to heart, though, that since it's really unneccessary to have a GUI at all, I could use something like OpenBSD, and my server would be even more secure... (Actually, I'm more familiar with Debian, I'd probably go that way...)
I have a couple of window machines. I have a few Linux machines. But, I will [b]NOT[/b] use a Windows machine for a web server. One of my machines is a Mandrake 9 box running Apache.
It's absolutely awesome, and 100% reliable.
But more than anything else, I don't have to worry about my shit getting hackified. Well, obviously there is always a chance. But, I know it's a helluva lot more secure than any Windows ISS server.
I know I'm not even a zit on the butt of the internet in terms of the stuff I serve up, but, it's relevant that home users like myself trust Linux over Windows.

I'd really be curious to hear how much of their money is now going to be spent to maintain this wonderful new bloated Windows system they just installed, compared to what it would have cost to stay with the Linux solution.
I live in the burbs... I have a wireless access point hooked up to my router. I only use it because I didn't feel like running CAT-5 through my walls to the office upstairs.
I've never bothered with any security measures at all. Not too long ago, I was working on a friend's MAC laptop that had a wireless built-in. I popped open the browser and what do you know... Internet access, because my access point was right there.
Now... How insecure is this really? And what does it really mean? It's not like the access point has unlimmitted range. I don't even think my nextdoor neighbor could hijack my connection. Should I worry that some dude is gonna park in front of my house and start leeching my connection?
Just because their OS is the most widely used doesn't mean Microsoft is a good company.
Their anti-competitive practices, coupled with their purposeful squashing of superior technology, added to their managing to convince the entire world that they need to upgrade their entire system 3 times a week, has been far more detrimental to computer technology than helpful.
I submit that if MS were to play nice instead of trying to horde all the technology for themselves (you know, to make all that money), the entire scope of technology would be lightyears ahead of where it is now.
And, on top of all that, Microsoft is actively attempting to take the freedom of how you use your personal computer, and the internet out of your hands.
So, do I give a fuck how stable Windows is? Not really. Not when I consider how much better things would be if the monopoly/7 ton gorilla that is Microsoft didn't exist at all.

The idea behind ID is that there must have been intelligent intervention because the current system is too complicated to be explained any other way.

That's like saying that there must be intelligence involved when a hurricane forms. Anyone who throws out the catastrophic number of variables that determine how a storm forms could probably come to that conclusion.
The simple fact is so obvious. Time only move forward. And as it does so, all things within time become more chaotic. And as they become more chaotic, they will work off each other, and change as everything changes around them. In other words, everything evolves..
When it comes time to explain all of this to my children, I will explain that, yes, there is a debate about it. But, the people making the opposing argument are ignorant, closed minded, and foolish.

That sounds like a good idea except for one thing... Torrents aren't really very usefull until a whole bunch of people are hosting the files. So, there would need to be some sort of distribution to all those servers BEFORE the Torrent goes live.
Unfortunate as it is, that just doesn't happen right now. So, someone out there would have to manage that process.
Even then, until a WHOLE BUNCH of people volunteer to host a popular program, the downloads will be unreliable and slow.
Browsers are free. Any browser, Konqueror, Opera, Firefox, or IE... They all make $0 for the company that produces them. I'm guessing that the only way to make money with the browser is through partnerships with the people who pay money, like Google, or Dictionary.com, to have their little widgets incorporated (as Firefox does)
Other than that, who really cares what browser anyone is using? Why is Microsoft so gung-ho about perfecting a product that already has so much competition? Isn't the real money in the ads served up by web pages (which is, of course, totally not dependant on a browser).
This is true. In Windows. I find that in Linux Firefox doesn't seem to eat RAM so bad. Except where Flash is concerned. Pages with Flash content, on Linux machines, really get bogged down.
In all reality though, I don't much mind. For the sluggishness I experience occasionally, it's STILL a much safer, better browser to use than IE.
I'm terrified of going to unknown websites with IE. So many times have I gone to a site, and within seconds, something screwy happens. I've had shit install itself without me even knowing it. I've had my home page change to some porn site, when the site I was visiting wasn't even a porn site itself!!
Not that I have a problem with porn. In fact, that's probably one of the best aspects of Firefox. It's safer to surf porn.:D
But, doesn't it worry any of you that Microsoft is currently doing their absolute best to squash out every other OS on the planet?!?
At the rate that they are strong-arming hardware manufactures, and this DRM bullshit, there may not be any hardware available to run this wonderful new system on!

I have 3 different Linux machines, of the 5 in my house. But, none of the 3 of them are nearly as practical for all the FX work that I do as my Windows machines.
And that really sux! I would really prefer to switch to Linux completely... But, the software simply doesn't exist. Unless, of course, you are ILM and have $countless millions$ to afford the top of the line software.
It's no surprise that these FX houses use Linux. It's been that way for years, in fact. What I would like to see is some of that ingenuity coming down to the home user. It just isn't there yet. And, as a result, I'm still trapped in Windows if I want to get any work done.
