From RG's article I take the decision to make Avalon available to other versions of Windows as a lack of confidence in the sales of Longhorn.
So if MS made Avalon not available for other versions of windows we'd moan about requiring to upgade to longhorn and MS wanting to make more sales on the expense of the consumer. When they announce it will be available for older versions of Windows we moan about their lack of confidence in longhorn sales...
sheesh......
Doesn't it give their other "patents" more credibility... if we get all excited about this pledge?
I guess whatever any company does, ppl will always be skeptic and assume the worst.
don't know if they were talking negatively about the lack of an option to delete if you bail out in the middle of playback or not
No they weren't, they were saying it's smart:)
It should be
Quality = Knowledgeable_Staff_On_Good_Salary + Reasonable_Deadlines
No deadlines is total chaos, reasonable deadline are another thing.
Software project estimation is already well established, and you should be able to provide a pretty accurate estimate given some time for investigation. The only projects that should have no deadlines are research projects, when you're pushing the computer science limitations. Which is rarely the case.
I have observed that the same author who would write impossible to understand code will also write impossible to understand comments
I'd question my own IQ if I were you. What's the poor programmer to do, he wrote the code, and the comments and you still don't understand:p
Actually I'm very ashamed to say that if there's one thing we've led the world in, it is this one. It is currently illegal to provide VoIP services, because the telephone company is government owned and they make loads of money off international phone calls. Heard rumours that this may change sometime in the future though...
I recently installed Solaris on my 2 Laptops. Reason: testing Solaris compatibility of software that I maintain
That's actually a circular reference, you're using Solaris because you need to support others who use it. Still doesn't answer the original question.
And I don't mean to make fun of Solaris:)
When I was in Fifth grade, I would have loved having a computer issued to me.
Actually this statement would hold at any point in time not just in fifth grade. Noone hates free computers.
The funny thing is that microsoft antispyware beta 1 detects the execution of the payload file and shows a prompt if you want continue or stop the execution.
Now what's funny about that? Should it always be the other way round?
Yeah I know this is against the "majority mindset" as someone just said. I don't care
Perhaps even more of a drawback, he points out, is the fact that a particular shield only works for one specific wavelength of light.
An object might be made invisible in red light, say, but not in multiwavelength daylight.
So this should mean that a cloak made for red light invisibility should change an object's color in multi wavelength daylight as it absorbs red and leaves the rest?
that in 2025 you can expect to be able to buy ur own space shuttle that's cheap as hell and reliable enough to live longer than you do
But it'll probably be called NakuYamazuka or something
In a quiet room, in a meeting, this phone's gonna go off-- what are they going to hear
Mine sounds zzzzzzzz, cuz it's always on vibration, as long as it's in my pocket there is no better ringtone
you'll have to remove the I from RAIVC, "Inexpensive" is not exactly what you'd call the current crop of video cards:) Maybe RAEVC. Figure that one out urself I'm not telling:p
It makes sense, to me anyways, to have an open bios. How can one claim to run a free system when their very boot process is hidden and secretive?
It seems ppl now want open source software just for the sake of it. For claiming having the hypothetical "free" system. Noone stops to even think whey they need this open-sourced.
One thing to keep in mind, open-source and proprietary software should co-exist and everyone should make their peace with that, u'll never get open-source software without proprietary ones, developers need to make a living too!
seem to be adopting firefox just as much as their *nix and MacOS counterparts. The article states 5.47% of windows users use firefox vs 5.69% of all OS users. I actually thought windows users percentage will be far lower.
Would be interesting to see a "What browser do you use" poll on/. I'd think firefox would account for 90%
That actually leads me to thinking that geeks are a far lower percentage of the population than I originally thought.
I don't know but I say $60,000 seems a bit low, maybe they were counting the office boys and janitors salaries in those:)
And regarding "never wanting to leave" although I agree it's one of the best places to be right now, you never know, 10 years from now noone knows where google could be, just like an AC just mentioned. So you need to keep that CV after all.
So an article about a fake screenshot makes it to the front page? And with such a misleading title? This is getting irritating, anything Anti-MS gets front page, just for the sake of it.
How did you know that? And how much are you talking? I saw no information about google salaries before, not even approximations.
Plus google made around a 1000 millionaires after the IPO, joining a startup with great potential could always attract smart people with an eye for long-term gains. And of course now after the IPO and all the buzz, thousands of people would work for them even for free! When you join a large reputable company like google or MS you're not only making money, you're making experience and an impressive CV. That later translates into money.

Get some alcohol
I thought that'd end with "to forget"
and books about google will give you +1
I think you should remove the "Neat" from the title
A good list still

You, me, and other /.ers may use google, the other 99.9% of the population is still locked on yahoo

Thanks moderators but this was actually supposed to be funny, not interesting :p
