I don't think the government has any interest in protecting our privacy. They pay lip service at press conferences, but nothing seems to change. An example, for all the Canadians voting in the federal election today...if you received one of those cards in the mail that says you are registered to vote, that means your name and address, along with other personal information, is on the federal voters list. This list isn't just for the government...it's distributed to each candidate for each party running in that election. That's right, your name, your address, and your personal information is in the hands of the Liberal Party, the Conservative Party, and even the Marijuana Party if you've filed a Canadian tax return in the past 10 years or so and didn't check the tiny little box excluding the CCRA from sharing your information. Once it's in the hands of the public, it can go anywhere (be stolen from the campaign office, or even sold to help finance the campaign). There are laws against the redistribution of this information, but the laws in place are essentially unenforceable, and punishing an offender after the damage has been done does nothing to protect our privacy. So you'll pardon me if I have little faith in the governments interest in protecting us.

I'm suspicious that some of the people here are just worried that they won't be able to pirate commercial ebooks.

That actually wasn't what I was thinking. Right now, I use Plucker to translate and read HTML documents on my (admittedly past its prime) Palm Vx. I can take larger webpages, such as HOWTOs, online manuals, and any other text-focused web content, and read them semi-conveniently on my old portable. I'm hoping this device will extend this kind of functionality, so maybe I can keep larger pages (doesn't take long to fill that 8MB on the Palm Vx).

I hope not. I just hope this drug is as restricted as hospital-strength narcotics are...locked in a hospital, requiring supervision for access and administration. If they let people take these pills home, there could be trouble, but you rarely see drugs like Fentanyl (which has similar access controls as what I just described) diverted onto the street, even though many addicts would just love to get some.

I have watched, and will continue to watch non-Star Trek scifi, but just because you like something better, doesn't mean I should suddenly dislike it or choose something else. Your opinion is certainly valid for you, but you need to realize it may not reflect the whole entire world. You think Trek sucks. I think it doesn't suck. The world didn't end with me saying that, so I guess we can disagree.

My crystal ball doesn't tell me if this will be a successful experiment, but I highly doubt Google will use it to advertise Google.
