  1. Re:Cool! on AOL to Raise Dialup Prices · · Score: 1

All of these are certainly up to the companies associated with them. (other than golf, of course.)

McDonalds could increase the amount of ice in drinks to make people buy bigger drinks.
I already don't eat there, this would just be one more reason I shouldn't.

Motion Picture creators could degrade the quality of videos to make people move to a new format.
I'd refuse to buy the new format and I'd purchase from creators who weren't foolish enough to do this.

Nike could make their shoes less comfortable and then sell replacement linings.
Nike shoes already fall apart and cost too much; more reason to buy something else.

Whether or not people would go for it is another thing entirely. AOL can charge whatever rate they want. If the consumer finds it unreasonable, then there's plenty of alternatives.

While that's a good point, you have to consider this though. So one out of every five voters made their choice for Perot. Giving him 20% of the popular vote. And none of the electoral vote.

I'm not saying its insignificant that 20% of people voted for Perot, but this illustrates the need for more proportional voting: it seems wrong that a person with 20% of the popular vote actually receives no electors.

The system doesn't allow for such modes of election in the United States. Even if people were willing to realize that a third (or fourth, or fifth, etc.) party is the solution, the system is skewed against such parties. Besides people will never vote that way en masse, because for years and years and years, their perception has been focused on this aspect of third party candidates (on the national level;) they're all nuts, ultra-liberal hippies, or plain unelectable. And why would you "throw away" your vote on that?

The only way a third party is ever gonna win is if runoff elections (in one of its many variants,) is made the new means of election in the US. Which won't happen, since the two major parties who are in a shared monopoly of power aren't gonna push for it. After all, if you're winning the game, why would you change the rules?

When they sold the stock their creed changed from "Do no evil" to "Do no evil to our stockholders". Just like every other company. In a capitalistic society, the bottom line for any company/corporation is PROFIT. If you can make more of it, then you will go with a decision that results in it. This is true regardless of morals, popular opinion, or even the law in some case (hoping you don't get caught and fined.)

Personally speaking, I think any corporation that's willing to do business within the regulations of an oppressive human-rights violating regime ought to be boycotted in the States. (And globally.) However, this opinion is clearly not a view shared by most; after all, just how much of our imported goods come from China here in the US? We (the people, and the government,) clearly put economics before ethics.

Because for every guy that would log in and "fix" what his answers were, someone else will log in and change it to what it really should be. But I think its a very smooth model at this point. People who complain about its online updates and the like seem like fools to me. If you don't want to have it update, then use the offline mode, which works just fine. It beats the hell out of having to manually update. Especially considering how fast it usually downloads for me. It especially kicks ass in the case of CS:S. Updated player models, new maps, how can you complain? Also, I'm sorry for all the people who couldn't play HL2 the day it came out. I downloaded it and was playing it about an hour after it was released. Great game. Too short.

While I feel for your condition, (my best friend's mother has the same issue with clots,) it is unlikely that this product will ever become useful for the average Joe at that cost.
