Offtopic? I think the poster was making light of something that seems to creep back to Slashdot very often - Microsoft bashing in some way, shape, or form. It was a far more creative way of saying 'Nothing to see here, move along.' I enjoyed it.

We don't always have to take everything so seriously. Slow down, smell the roses, and laugh when you see something funny. :D

  3. Re:So what exactly *is* the bandwidht of my eyes? on An Alternate Human · · Score: 1
Actually, it's far greater than that. You forgot to take in what resolution the eye sees at. Looking at a screen is far less quality than an actual object. You also can't forget that since we see things with two eyes, we see things with depth (Although, I'm not quite sure whether or not that would be a factor at guessing the equivalent of information the eye takes in).

Your screen displays at 1280x1024. Our eye can probably see far, far greater than that. Don't forget that our sight is also limited, and we blend different colors together that the human brain can not process. Anyways, I can only imagine how many tera/petabytes a second the human eye recieves. It was a good attempt though. It just feels funny to describe a human being with computer terms.

Many different things in the tech world have to create a name for themselves in order to become a household name. Names don't need to be descriptive, either. Linux is a good example of this - it's not descriptive in the least. Neither is Windows, and that hasn't stopped them from becoming as popular as they have. Hell, if it weren't for the iPod video, most consumers would have no clue what an MP4 even was.

In any case, Ubuntu's names are descriptive of the technology inside. Warty Warthog was an early release that was ugly and buggy. Hoary Hedgehog was a release that looked nicer, and was eating bugs left and right. Breezy Badger was much more user-friendly and desktop-friendly. Dapper Drake looks very nice, and has many bugs taken out. Edgy Eft will be the release with the newest toys, and truly start to shine in the OS department as a desktop replacement.

We have implemented a system that decreases the liklihood of older players being ambushed. We have also implemented a pill that allows the older player to regain the vigor of his character's prime. This buff lasts for an hour, and is only usable once each day. 9. It's a shame on China Bans Running Your Own Email Server · · Score: 1
Things like this happen in U.S. law as well, where bills are passed through Congress with a double-edged sword. They make the bills so that you'd look bad to vote against it (After all, Congressmen are only concerned about staying in office), but there's also a nasty side to the bill. A month or two ago there was a bill that was going through Congress with a loophole build into page 200 or so (out of 324) that would earn a company $9 billion dollars.

However, it's only because bills are so long that things like this are passed through. The Read the Bills Act is a good remedy to the double-edged sword nature of many US Bills. Unfortunately, the people in China have to deal what they're given, but I have no doubt they'll fight back somehow. We've seen it before, and I'm sure we'll see it again and again.

My school uses Websense for blocking questionable websites as well. However, it doesn't keep the students from finding ways around it. At one point, (I don't use MySpace myself, this is what I've heard and seen) using blog.myspace.com worked as a workaround through websense. Then Pixxy was used to proxy around Websense.

As long as there's proxies, there'll be people getting into MySpace. Then everyone'll get into MySpace. Then a week later Websense will block the proxy page. It's a vicious cycle that'll never end. The smarter ones will find a proxy code and put it on an obscure portion of their own website, and not tell anyone. Those who gloat about their own website will only find it being blocked by Websense.

Trust me, I've seen it happen before personally. I'm a friend of a gloater. :)
