I've seen several ad-hoc networks called "Free Public WiFi". I wondered about them and found this blog. It seems there is a "feature" in Windows where after you disconnect from a wireless network, it will continue broadcasting the SSID as an ad-hoc network. Other people then see it, try and connect, and then start broadcasting it themselves...
Actually they attract the earth exactly as much as the earth attracts them (every force has an equal and opposite reaction force), otherwise there would be a net force causing the earth-boxer system to accelerate. It's just the effect of the same force on the earth is much less noticable.
Just beacause you don't care about Mac doesn't make it "available by default on every end-user OS in existence".
And I'm pretty sure that when installing a.NET application on XP I've been prompted to download 100Mb+ of.NET runtime before it would work, which is not exactly what I would call "working out of the box", especially when there is no fast internet connection available.

I just installed the update and restarted, and that website STILL switches on my iSight without warning.
