I've been running Centos (RHEL) on my desktop (home & work, laptop & desktop) for years now with no significant problems at all.. it pretty much "just works".
I've also toyed with switching to ubuntu to see what all the fuss is about but ultimately see no compelling reason to switch. Sorry Mr Red Hat - your system works just fine already..;)
I don't feel any great desire to rush headlong into "the cloud". The whole cloud buzz these days is interesting and no doubt it has its place but not on my desktop thanks. I also wouldn't like to spend much time online with a smartphone, no matter how shiny.. my old eyes couldn't take the strain!
I hear Jonathan Ross is out of work for a while.. he would be a good doctor and Russell Brand could be his trusty 'female' sidekick.. they can travel through space and time making obscene calls to old Davros.
Or they could go back in time and not get themselves fired, thereby sparing us (and davros) the pain of doctor woss.
They would have to live below ground like rats in holes to try to shield themselves from deadly cosmic rays, occasionally darting into the sunlight before their max radiation doses were exceeded. They would never see a body of water, a natural plant, a cloud, or breath non-artificial air again.
Read 'below ground' as 'parents basement' and I think you just described the current lifestyle of choice for 90% of slashdotters..;)
On the other hand, maybe these are (or could be) solar powered - handy for areas where water is in short supply.
Shame the article doesn't actually say more about how these things work.. do they require a water supply? Where does the moisture and oxygen they supposedly produce come from?
Even if they do require water, are they more or less water efficient than real plants? For example - when you water a real plant you can expect some of that water to simply evaporate before the plant gets to use any of it.. if this thing uses a sealed water tank then that is perhaps less of an issue.
Anyway its still neat and now robotic dogs have something suitable to pee on!;)
Also quite a waste of time so a match on both counts!;)
So what about the 'crowdsourced' search?

Would be interesting to go back over the relevant satellite and other aerial pics and try to see why the wreckage was missed back then.. or did the pics not cover that area?
I think the idea is that if on the way up a shuttle sustains the type of damage to the heat shield that ultimately destroyed the last one on the way down, they can send up the rescue craft.
By careful examination of the craft after it gets up there (which they seem to do now) they can ascertain if it is in fit shape to make the journey home, other wise it stays up there and presumably the crew all get into the ISS and wait for the rescue craft to arrive.
Of course if the rescue shuttle is also too badly damaged on the way up then they are screwed.. unless they bring a 'shuttle repair kit' with them.
I was wondering though does the ISS have more than one place to dock a shuttle? Or do they have to somehow undock the damaged craft after the crew disembark and then dock the rescue craft? Or does the whole rescue process happen while both craft are undocked and the crew do a cool space dive between shuttles?
The price difference is presumably the resellers markup.. now that the cat is out of the bag on the 'real' price (and who makes it) I would think they will have to reduce their markup soon or lose sales to other cheaper resellers.
I doubt the new one will ever be available to regular buyers for $98 though unless you can get enough people together for a bulk buy.
Actually there was a 32 year old woman competing (her 5th olympics) who won a silver in the vaults.. so there is life after 20 for those with the will to keep working at it.
I had noticed that there seems to be quite a few 'old timers' across many disciplines in this olympics.. dunno if its more the usual or I just didnt notice before but I found it interesting.
Not sure if its better medical/physio care these days or more funding for more competitors enabling them to devote more time to training rather than working for a living.. or a bit of both.
check for illegal drug use of its employees by analyzing computer keyboards after the employees have gone home
Speaking as one who used to work nights cleaning offices of a very large global IT consultant during my student days and being a comp sci student alone at night in an office full of fancy computers with the latest software, I was basically like a kid in a candy store.. my prints may well have found their way onto quite a few keyboards in that place..;)
Do you know what happens in your office in the dead of night?
The new X Files movie was just released today in Australia.. TFA is on an aussie news site.. is the good doctor on the payroll or is it just a happy coincidence??;)

wait for them to erupt and the news media will monitor them for us!
Why wait for the media to report it - some wordsmith on twitter is sure to get the news out sooner! (in 140 chars or less)

Coincidentally I just watched an episode of Rough Science where they built a rocket (of the firework variety) using bat droppings.
Would be way cooler (and probably safer for the old folks) to make some new bigger aibo to sit on and cruise around.. maybe chase cats too. ;)
