  1. I think this would be "ironic" on Mac OS X Tiger Released and Analyzed · · Score: 1
Let's see here.... a few Apple resellers accidentally ship copies early. Apple complains. Apple remains firm that nobody should have their copies before 4/29.
Apple has been hyping for two weeks that anybody who orders by 4/25 will receive theirs on 4/29.

I ordered my copy from the Apple store way back on 4/13. So today, I get this email:

    Dear Valued Apple Customer,

We appreciate your recent Apple Store Order WXXXXXXXX

Due to an unexpected delay, we are unable to ship the following
item(s) by the date that you were originally quoted:

    M9639Z/A, OS X V10.4 "TIGER" RETAIL-INT
will now ship on or before 04/29/2005

Nice job, Apple. My order status is still "preparing shipment" at the moment. At first I thought it had to do with the tigerdirect thing, but as of now there's no court order.

Of course this delay will be forgotten in a couple weeks' time, a few extra days' delay for a new OS isn't that important in the grand scheme of things.
I just think it's a bit funny given how Apple reacted to other companies who actually managed to ship it to their customers on or before the release date.

I wish to God I could get that far; my problem with weightlifting was that I could either push a weight or not; eventually I'd run out of strength, but I never got the feeling that my muscles were being pushed.

I've run into that before... it means you're doing something wrong, regarding form or technique, or you need to switch up your routine, or you're overtraining. I've done a fair amount of research over the past year, though I'm not an expert. I learned enough to know that you can't just go blindly in and start pumping away, there are right and wrong ways to doing things-- otherwise you'll just be wasting time and getting frustrated.

For the longest time I couldn't increase my weights with the bench press, then I discovered I was using a hand position that didn't give me the best leverage so I was running out of steam early.

Anyway, you won't get that "burn" feeling unless you're doing a high amount of reps, which is good for toning and endurance, but not building strength and size. If you increase the weight, and take each set to failure (use a weight where you can go 6-8 reps before failing) you won't feel that hot burn during the exercise but you will notice improvements. The main thing is you have to eat a TON of protein in order for it to do any good, generally at least 1g per pound of lean body weight per day.

I never really started getting in shape until a couple years ago (age 29). I was out of shape in a scrawny way rather than a fat way though.

The reason people give up on exercise and hate doing it is that for the first week or two, it SUCKS-- if you haven't been in the habit of exercising. The first time I went running I got half a mile before I nearly collapsed, and then I could barely walk 2 days later. So I can see why so many people avoid it.
Same thing with weightlifting-- delayed onset muscle soreness is a bitch and you literally won't be able to move a couple days after you first start with weights.

Once you push yourself through the initial struggle, that's when you start feeling the benefits of the endorphine release, and you learn to feel the "good" kind of muscle soreness. You start to crave exercise. (This is why some people actually get addicted to exercise, which can also be unhealthy)

It's probably harder to get through the dietary changes. You pretty much NEED to give up soft drinks. Soft drinks are 100% pure crap for your system. Even beer is better for you (and I still have beer on the weekends). Just eliminating soft drinks, drinking lots of water instead, and avoiding the deep fried stuff makes a huge difference, you don't even necessarily have to count calories.

What's cool about terraserver, if you have multiple years to choose from in your area, you can compare what it looked over time. Comparing satellite photos of my town from between 1993 and 2002 was eye-opening.

There are many types of calculations out there (think The Game of Life or other CAs) that by their nature cannot be reversed, so all of those states would have to be stored or it would be mathematically impossible to calculate the reverse steps.

It also says in TFA that it doesn't actually calculate the reverse steps, so it doesn't matter if it's mathematically impossible.

What it does do is take complete snapshots every (for example) 100 steps. In order to move "backwards" a step, it returns to the previous breakpoint (a known state) and goes forward 99 steps.
Then it returns to the same breakpoint and goes forward 98 steps. And so on. So from your perspective, you see the 99th step, 98th, 97th, and on down. It only LOOKS like it's running backwards.

This would even work for the game of life.

So the performance tradeoff would be this:
More frequent breakpoints causes forward execution to be slower because it's spending more time saving data at regular intervals for breakpoints, but "reverse" execution would be faster because it has to iterate fewer steps from the previous breakpoint.

Sadly, we live in a world where the OPERATING SYSTEM will soon require a 3D card to even function. (Windows Longhorn)

And that's not even an original idea from Microsoft.

OSX 10.3 (Panther) already utilizes 3D acceleration on video cards and treats all windows as textures. That's how the nifty "expose" feature works. The first time I saw that feature it was one of those "why didn't anybody think of this before" moments. I don't even own a mac, yet... but my mini is on its way. :-)

10.4 (Tiger) will take it to the next level with Core Image, which requires a video card with programmable pixel shaders (DirectX 9 equivalent from the Windows world). This will allow, among other things, realtime filters applied to videos, images, and of course some new OS eye candy. But it's mainly there to speed up image and video processing, which is what macs are supposed to be good at.

However, a 3D card is still not "required" as the OS will automatically scale back the features that aren't supported (you will still be able to run Tiger on a 400MHz G3 iMac).
I don't know whether Longhorn will actually require 3D cards, but saying "soon" in reference to Longhorn is a tad bit optimistic, don't you think?
