The company I did some work for, does this, and it is looked forward to all year by the engineering crowd, the usual recepients. Of course, being a large fortune 500 firm, they had lots of patents and people involved.

It was like another mark of achievement, making it into the patent ball.

The LG LWHD1200R I got for my girl in Fla is working fine. Got it from compactappliances.com delivered via UPS. No shipping or taxes, such a deal. Plugs into regular outlet.

No problems, just store "right side up" overnight to let the oil resettle if UPS didn't follow the sticker. And remove the manual and instructions before you run it.

  10. Re:Wiki was obviously wrong... on The Mainframe World Is Alive, Even For Those Under 40 · · Score: 1

You have to think back to old style computing. If you wanted a peripheral, you need a controller card. Then some place to plug it into (bus). Mainframes had enormous expansion capabilities, if you needed another item and it wouldn't fit, you could get expansion cabinets with additional buses which would hold additional controllers.

Typical mainframes would have a couple of dozen hard drives, of which a 14" multi-platter drive would have 300 Mb or so. A dozen tape drives or so, a couple of line printers, IO cards for terminals, stacks of memory cards, etc. Thats a lot of controller cards that need to be plugged in.
