  1. The last paragraph is important on Interview With BitKeeper Author Larry McVoy · · Score: 2

comparing software development to insurance is brilliant, it maps very well into the real world. Yes a major project is too big for a single small company to do, but spread the cost around, and it works.

This is a model that will work for open software.

  2. Re:Didn't take long for the cries of "Terrorism".. on Unique ID Codes for CD / DVD Manufacturers · · Score: 2

I think the idea that piracy funds drug dealing is one that is easily dismissed, given that world wide drug dealing is a far larger business than all of the movie and music biz combined.

  3. Re:Good science reporting? on More on the Fine Structure Constant · · Score: 2

That is real science at work. The sound of discovery isn't "eureka I have found", but rather, "hmm, that is odd", or in this case, "there is something here, but what is it?"

  4. When motherboards support it on Serial ATA vs. SCSI - Will it Compete? · · Score: 2

When the next generation of motherboards comes out with support for 4-8 serial disk ports, as well as the USB, Firewire, LAN, and other ports, then ATA can be left for cdroms and the like.

  5. What would be great on AOL-Time/Warner's PVR to Skip Ad-Skipping · · Score: 4, Interesting

Is if the pvr had the ability to recognize repeated commercials, and would allow the user to skip over a commerical they have already seen.

I mean seeing the same damn cell phone ads over and over again isn't going to make me buy something I don't have any use for.

  6. Public schools and the community on Microsoft vs. Northwest Schools Part II · · Score: 2

I'd think the public school community would be much more open to, and used to working with the community, and user groups, than say leaders of big business.

It fits with their model of parent participation.

  7. That is why it is art on Hacking the Highways · · Score: 2

There is a fine line between art and graffiti, and this man successfully walked that line.

Part performance, part painting, part film, it covers a lot.

  8. Re:Simpsons jumped the shark long ago on Slashback: Wal-Modem, Culpability, Misquotes · · Score: 2

The X-files episode was great fun made of big show. I expect the Simpsons to take a poke at any other show out there that has a run like the X-files did. That the stars of the show were willing participate is just great.

That is one of the reasons it can keep going, as there will always be new material to satire.

  9. For as long as on Virus Piggybacks Microsoft Mail Worm · · Score: 2, Insightful

For as long as people keep insisting that sending spam doesn't hurt anyone cause they can just hit the delete key.

  10. Been done on Home Made Alarm Systems? · · Score: 2

Had a friend who hooked up a Bigmouth card, one of the first telephone response units, which called the cops when triggered, and the cops caught the guys red handed, still in the house.

This was like 15 years ago, this was a turbo xt pc.

Alarm systems are very simple electronics, its running all the wiring for the sensors thats expensive.

  11. Walmart is very price sensitive on Installing Linux On A Wal-Mart OS-less machine · · Score: 2

  14. Re:I can't understand ECC on To ECC Or Not To ECC? · · Score: 1

ECC is Error correcting memory, it has the ability to fix the memory error (single bit) on the fly.

I worked in a VAX shop a while ago, which had ECC memory. One day we started logging memory errors. Other than the error count going up, we didn't notice it, and could wait till the end of the day to call service, so they would come in after hours.

ECC is the answer to the problem you describe.

  15. What is wrong with MPG? on USB Audio Recorders? · · Score: 2

Take your audio stream, and encode it down, then it will transfer in no time at all.

even at 50Kb (modem speed) its not going to take more than a few minutes to download an hours worth of spoken voice.

If you setup an ftp site, it would make archives readily availble in the future.

  16. BSD is the open source model to use. on Public Procurement and Open Source · · Score: 4, Insightful

Look at the license of the BSD's, this is what software developed with public money should be released as.

The TCP/IP stack, which has been adopted by just about everyone, to great benefit is the prime example.

The GPL folks can use the BSD code, as can MS, and the rest of the commercial world. If the taxpayers have paid for the developement of the code, it should be free across the board from there, as its paid for.

  20. How is this different than anything else? on Municipal Net Access: Unfair Competition? · · Score: 1

The municipality has a monopoly over the right of way, they own it.

This to me is no different than the paved roads and sewer system, or utility poles the electric company leases land for from the municipality.

The only difference I see is that they are cutting out the middle man, phone and cable companies, who have both purchased monopolies from the municipality.

Good for the consumer and municipal taxpayer.

For non rack mounted equipment, wire shelving works very well. It holds up well, and allows for ventilation and water flow (from fire sprinklers). You can then tie wrap the cables to the shelving.

And either black anodized or chrome plated depending on decor.

  24. Hybrid system on Server Naming Conventions? · · Score: 1

I'd suggest giving the major items their own names, so that they can be refered to by the staff easily.
