In my experience it's the other way around. In theory managed languages (stuff like C# and Java) can be better optimized since you have more information at runtime but in practice I've never seen any useful code written in those languages outperform similar stuff in C or C++.

  14. Re:I've Gone Back to PC on The 5-Year Console Cycle Is Dead · · Score: 1

Yes, but the graphics developers are getting out of these consoles are much better than what you'd get on a PC with similar hardware. On consoles you don't have as much overhead from the OS (and background applications) and since the hardware is fixed you can optimize your engine to make better use of it than on PC.

They would need to do that in concert with all the other big manufacturers like Acer and Lenovo, as well as game developers. I would say Microsoft too but I doubt they would want to since it would be competition for their Xbox. They would basically agree on fixed specs for a cheap gaming PC that anyone could sell, and game devs would target it for their games. But I doubt anything like that could ever happen. There would be too much bickering about what brand of CPU or GPU to use, and with nobody big enough to impose stuff (like Microsoft) the thing would fail before it even started.

  19. Re:Ghost Recon on Do You Really Need a Discrete Sound Card? · · Score: 1

You should be aware that games have long (roughly from the start of this current console generation) stopped supporting accelerated sound and started doing it all in software on the CPU. Mostly because it wasn't supported anymore in Vista (and 7) but also because CPUs have become powerful enough to do it without slowing down other things. So discrete sound cards are only useful (in the gaming world) for playing old games that supported stuff like EAX effects.

I've never understood what benefits raytracing has for gaming. Every demo of it I've seen has looked very poor compared to how it's done currently. It pretty much always involves way too many mirrors and shiny surfaces which look too synthetic and aren't of much use in an actual game anyway.
