This is a completely ridiculous regulation! Here is what I constantly carry with me:
One 9-cell battery for my Dell Inspiron (installed in the laptop). Three Nikon EN-EL4 Li-ion batteries. One is installed into my D2H and two are spares. One small Li-ion battery in my cell phone.
So what do I have to do when I fly on Jan 10th? Mail the EN-EL4s to myself? That is completely ridiculous! These batteries run for $130-$150 a piece!
Honestly, I would certainly give up my right to vote in the next election for a full scholarship. I'm fairly sure my state will vote Republican anyways (that's a good thing)... Being a poor college student, I would certainly like a full scholarship.
This is an interesting move by Microsoft. In summary, it seems to me that they are attempting to appeal to the Linux crowd. This will probably be a semi-success. Additionally, they may be releasing it so that people will look at it and report bugs to them. Just a quick thought.

I don't have any current benchmarks, but I know that when I was running XP on my desktop (see below) alongside Gentoo on the very same machine, I received these results:
10-13FPS higher in America's Army on Gentoo Linux and ~5 seconds less loading time consistently
8-10FPS higher in Enemy Territory on Gentoo Linux
Desktop:
1GB RAM PC3200
2.8GHz P4 w/Hyperthreading 800MHz FSB
Abit IC7-MAX3 motherboard
ATI Radeon X800 XT PE
I admit that Linux has failed to capture game programmers' interests, so there are not many good games out for Linux. That is why I don't have any more benchmarks.
Sorry, let me clarify. It seems I was half asleep when I wrote that comment.
It's a financial success. Definitely. Nobody argues with that.
It is not a success in the field of gaming performance. Not because DirectX is inefficient, not because OpenGL sucks, but simply because of all of the overhead that Windows introduces into the enviornment. Just booting Vista Ultimate (32-bit) without running any additional software hogs 700MB of my 2GB of RAM. I don't ever recall an OS that hogs more RAM.
You are completely correct, but just because it makes Microsoft tons of money does not necessarily mean it is a success for gaming. It's far from that.
It seems that Gabe Newell wants to comment on every platform but Windows' failure. I remember a while back, he commented on Linux's gaming failures. Now, he's complaining about Macintosh's gaming failures.
Where's an article from Gabe Newell on Windows' gaming failures? Sure, there are many games on Windows, but the performance on some is horrible compared to the performance of the same games on Linux or Macintosh platforms. Windows takes up so much RAM, lowering overall game performance.
In my opinion, Gabe Newell thinks he is God and that he owns the gaming world. This is just what I seem to get from all of his articles.
Disclaimer: In general, I respect Gabe Newell and he did a wonderful job with Steam and the Half-Life series and their subsidiaries.
I hate all cell phone companies. Including AT&T. They try to rip you off for every penny you have. I can go on all day about horror stories with the phone companies. I hate them all! AT&T has no right to remove my service just because I talk bad about them on Slashdot and other websites. That's ridiculous! (yes, I am an AT&T subscriber)
This sounds great -- especially if it can be done to 2.5" drives and 3.5" drives. It sounds like a great way to improve the speed of hard drive reads, seek times, and data capacity.
This is a great idea. I love seeing the stars at night. I moved into college on August 25th and I am now in the middle of nowhere. I come from a city, so this is a drastic change for me. I lived on the edge of a city and when I looked in the direction of the city (SE), the sky was very bright and almost no stars were visible, but when I looked to the northeast, I could see some stars, although there was still a good bit of light. I notice a drastic difference between there and here in the mountains.
I'm all for controlling light pollution of the skies at night, but it will never happen. Many neighborhoods need street lights and inner-city places definitely need them. It's a wonderful idea, but it will never happen.
I wonder why nobody else has ever thought of virtualization for only one process. That is an amazing idea. Do programs exist that can do this yet? In Linux? I hate to admit it, but Microsoft has a wonderful idea there.
Actually, Aquafina comes from Columbia, South Carolina. This is where I currently reside. Aquafina is the nastiest of all of the bottled/spring/purified water out there. It's plain disgusting.
This is why a lot of people opt-out of even being able to receive them at all. I know of many people who have called their providers and removed the text feature altogether.
XKCD is hilarious! I'm glad it was linked. I just finished reading every last comic (except for a few of the beginning ones that were high school drawings). There are a lot of classic ones. I want the "Make me a sandwich" "What? Make it yourself" "Sudo make me a sandwich" "Okay" t-shirt!

It may be that way, but if they are accepted, eventually in the future, it will be required to watch an advertisement or two before playing the game.
So which day is /.'s 10th?
Nice history, by the way.
Happy 10th!

I hate you all! Go kill yourselves!!! :D :) :) :)
Can someone point me to where Fox has shows online for free? I don't see anything but clips on fox.com.
Ah it's all good man. Nice to see that some people around here are still friendly. :)
Take care mate.
Sorry mate. I must have read the post wrong. I thought you (or whoever the poster was) was talking about people with illegal copies suing Microsoft.
My bad.
It will be a horrible day when a company can be sued for blocking out users who downloaded their OS illegally.

That really sucks. Viacom should have asked you before using the clip in the first place.
Woohoo! That'll show Microsoft and the SCO group! Haha! Finally! :D

No problems here. I installed all of the available updates last night. I'm using Vista Ultimate 32-bit edition (on a 64-bit processor).
Oh, really? That explains why it's so nasty around here. I have never bought any outside of here even though I spend half my time out of state.
