This isn't talking about solar panels. This is talking about using mirrors to concentrate sunlight to use on a sterling engine. These panels if kept clean have a very long life span.
I agree it won't work well in the US outside of the south, but think about how much coal/oil/natural gas usage would be eliminated if these systems could generate 50% of the power used by the southwestern quadrant of the US. (Yes I know the article says they are shooting for 20% by 2010 but if it works more will be in the works.) Other locations will have to find other solutions, but if this works it will be a huge step forward. REJOICE!!
Of course, I'm concerned that this won't be blocked by the same kinds of things that are blocking other recyclables. How many endangered birds will it take getting fried by these things before environmentalists start agitating for them to be shut down. I imagine that they have taken steps to avoid these things but I never underestimate the human races ability to shoot themselves in the foot.
One question too for anyone who might now the answer to this. What will this do to local climate, will it make the nights colder because there won't be as much heat radiating out of the sand at night?
The first thing I thought when reading this was to remember the plan put forward in the 70's to sprinkle ash on the polar ice caps to prevent global cooling.
We do not understand enough to know how our actions might affect things long term. Case in point is the recent news that the HCFC's promoted to prevent ozone depletion, quite possibly have a terrible detrimental effect on global warming.
What happens if we put this in place, and the ocean conveyor shuts down causing an intense cold snap as is predicted by some scientists as one of the effects of global warming. Wouldn't we really feel horrible then?
I wish that we could devote half of what we spend on defense to study of environmental science but I don't see that happening anytime soon. We definitely need to know more though before we do something as horrendously expensive as launching several million small objects into space. I know the article proposes using an em lauch method, but where does the energy come from to run the em launching system. If you start thinking about the energy required to launch that many objects to space even with a 100% efficient launch system its mind boggling.
There are controls that you can set that limit the times during the day that you can play. They even have a seperate password so that you can have someone set your limits and not be able to change them. But for the serious addicts there are always other ways around -- whether it be getting a second and third account or playing on some of the homebrew servers around. I noticed with my son that whenever he couldn't get on WOW he just hung out in the forums. I finally ended up keeping the power cord to his computer except for the few hours a day I would allow him to play. I would like to have him take advantage of the internet for all the things there are to learn out on the net, but whenever he has computer access he is either on wow or on the wow forums.
I can't understand why people don't want a paper trail.
Imagine some million dollar candidate giving out $100 (under the table of course) to every person that came and showed them their reciept that they had voted for them. Still can't understand??
Or how about some tough thats getting paid to "enoforce the vote" in their neighborhood. Everyone has to show them their receipt that they had voted for the "correct" candidate or get roughed up. Still can't understand??
According to what I read ( I'm looking for a link ) The change from CFC's will do more damage to global warming than any amount of savings that might be realized from the Kyoto treaty.
The problem is do we know that what we are doing about it has side effects that we don't need. I was reading this week that the "solution" to the ozone layer with the CFC replacements contributes 10,000 times the the global warming problem than the CFC's did. I don't think we can know what to do.
What happens if a precedent gets set that the RIAA must pay legal fees is you get attorney's offering to defend the people being hit with these frivolous lawsuits right and left. If there is a reasonable chance for them to win, and they have a good chance of getting paid for it, there are enough hungry lawyers that would jump at the chance.
Nice to know they can be gotten through steam now. I bought X3, but could only get it to actually come up about 1 in 5 times -- it kept telling me to insert the original disc. That got relegated to the never play stack even though it seems fun.
Insurance companies base their premiums on the costs of the base rated class. Large SUV's being safer should theoretically get lower insurance rates. I agree that its stupid for most people to commute in an SUV -- personally I drive an 84 Honda -- but they are safer. If everyone on the road was driving large vehicles accident fatalities would probably drop.
One of the most anoying things about the PVP system in WOW is that it doesn't really matter how skilled you are, the people with the uber raiding guilds will win because they have the best gear unless they are complete idiots.
By the fact that on the horde side it stops at the barrens while on the alliance side the pointless inance mind destroying chat goes on to the end game.
As has been previously noted his actions probably are against an EULA that he agreed to which certainly has the action to delete his account listed as a possible cosequence.
Course having never read their EULA I could be wrong.
I agree that would be awesome -- but think of the nightmares that would generate if you group with someone and share the quest and then split up cause you have to log -- how pissed would you be to log back in and find that they have finished the quest for you?? Well maybe that wouldn't be so bad -- more reality after all. ~~shrug~~
Lol the more arguments I come up with to think how much of a headache this would be, the more I think its a great idea.
Another thing would be to have armor vendors / weapon vendors only have items to sell after quests to bring them components for that item have been completed, and once the items have sold the quests could be available again.
What if Blizz sold gold -- they wouldn't need to hire farmers to create it since after all it is just 1's and 0's but then turned around and used the money that generated to hire these players to play the mobs.
Can you imagine how much more fun the game would be if you go to attack some mob healer character that instead of maybe trying to heal itself once at low health it actually thought about and reacted to what you were doing.
How much more challenging could the game become if when faced with a serious threat the gnoll encampment instead of letting you pick them off one by one screamed for help and all its buddies came around.
They could be randomly cycled through any mob in the world which when not occupied would follow its standard ai script. You would never know when "pulling a mob" whether you were facing a dumb AI mob or a smarter "farmer" controlled one.
Sure there would probably be lots of issues to iron out but imagine the fun!!!
As someone who has hear mostly negative things about eq2, it was interesting to see someone who moved from wow to EQ2. I to am starting to get frustrated with WOW's lack of casual content at 60 and would was interested to read that maybe there is worth to buying EQ2. THX

India is the most corrupt place I have ever heard of. Conversations with indians that I work with amaze me every time with how corrupt it is there.

Ya -- thats the point I was trying to make -- you just said it better. :)

:) I did.
You have to be kidding me. To get high enough ranks for the epic pvp gear you have to play the BG's 20 hours a day continuously for months
Nice to know they can be gotten through steam now. I bought X3, but could only get it to actually come up about 1 in 5 times -- it kept telling me to insert the original disc. That got relegated to the never play stack even though it seems fun.
"I don't think it had anything to do with fear of mob-rule." Try reading the federalist papers then.
How does that represent a barrier. The ID's are FREE!!! I don't understand that.

Aye!!

Ha we did that once on my uncles farm -- singed all the hair off the front of my head. Loads of fun.

Ha its republicans vs Democrats in AV to decide this bill.
Can you imagine then what people would be selling accounts for on Ebay??
If they all of a sudden said no more new accounts I'll bet you could sell accounts for $1000 or more.
Ya -- unless you notice that the article is in the games category. -- I didn't notice that at first either but once I did then ... It made sense
