There you have it, it is all a marketing campaign to attract more users to Spray(and Lycos) mail. I guess they made it quite well, mentioned on slashdot and all...
Microsoft sell a complex system with the claim idiots can administer it. The DWP employ/contract idiots to administer a complex, but vital, system. Niether of these are "innocent parties".
Oh, I must have missed just that commercial...
In all *nix systems I've seen, the root user has the ability to run "rm -rf/*" and by that completly destroy their system. You can't expect an system to be completly idiot-proof at administration level imo.
Although I agree on that the design of the particular infrastructure seems a bit unsecure when you that easily can break 60000 systems. What if some bored hacker gained access to that main account...
"bieng the tool of choice for DJs..." And what the hell are DJs doing with a VCR?
He were probably talkingabout vinyl players, thatstill are possible to get, in quite good quility too. Much because of them being a nessescry tool for DJing.
I'd think it were ok if someone stationed themself at the red light district and told people that probably were going for the concert were that concert actually will take place. That is more like what they are doing, since they are not restricting access to the "bad" site, just informing misguided people.
"An animal may have rights when it asks for them."
This may be a parahrased quote from a Supreme Court judge. If not, it's one that I'll wager they would agree with.
When your ape signs "please let me vote for president, I care about ecological progress" as interepted by someone without bias, and it can then sign "yes, I swear and understand" in court, it'll be able to win rights in a rather simple court.
But they can't. And so they don't have equal rights to humans.
Then comes te question: Do children have rights? Do mentally ill people have rights? Do people that can't communicate have rights?
I don't thinks it's that simple, yes the right to vote maybe can be associated with the ability to communicate(hard to vote if you can't), but the right to live and the right to not be physically abused shouldn't.
Rights isn't an easy topic, it's much affected by peoples feelings. I think animals should have rights, if not the kind of rights an human have.
Well, no. You can't do that with the Winamp skinning(the old one). The only thing you can change is how stuff looks. Wich mean that whatever preferences the skinner has, I'll get a compact skin with all neccescary features.
I'm not sure, but I think that makes quite a difference, especially among long-time Winamp users.
I meant the skinning of the old Winamp. Where you had less freedom......to fuck up the interface.
Of course you can debate on wether the buttons and sliders are placed in the best an optimal way, but to me the most important part is, that they are placed the same way.
It lacks one of winamps greatest features, The skinning!
Winamps skinning is so great because it enables anyone with some grasp on using paint to make a skinn that still is usable. The limitation that you cant do all cool and nifty stuff(as you can in modern mode, or many other players) is a good thing. That means that you won't see skins with reduced functionality(because the skinner was lazy) or have everything aranged in a weird way(because the skinner was incompetent) or that fills up half your screen with uneccescary bloat(because the skinner had to put a photo of his idol in it). (I don't like the modern skins to Winamp that much either, although the default on is decent)
Now that combined with the flawless playback and fileformat support and the plugin system and the small memory footprint is what makes Winamp the gratest player IMO.
Because self-updating works so well for Windows...
Does it matter what Windows do? And besides not getting used, I haven't heard of problems with windows update.
I think that will have to be an important argument when speaking of security. Linux isn't 100% reliable, just as no system are. Therefore it's recomended that you keep your system up-to-date, but not many common users actually do that, that would probably pose quite an risk if Linux grew to higher market shares, and an autoupdate system will be neccescary.
This reminds me of the matchbox-sized pojector the finnish company Upstream expects to put on market soon, with a first model commercially avaible in 2005. Washington Times have a story on it too.
Well, atleast in Sweden surveys have shown that youths with parents that introduces them to drinking(with the reasons you stated) is more probable to get problems with alcohol later in life. What parents say has more inpact in the long run than most people think. If the parents tells a firm no to alcohol, it will ofcourse not stop the child from getting it and using it, but it will reduce therisk of the child abusing it.
So you actually wish that you would have been caught and sued? Or is it that you think it was ok then, for you to do theese kind of illegal activities, but todays youth should know better?
Also I don't think the quality of games are that closely linked to piracy, I'd guess that it is more about change in trends. Today games, at least on the pc platform, often is more about cool graphics than gameplay. And also, people of older age(well not much older) seams more fond of the kind of games that they grew up with, so that may blur your vision some.
I, for one think that there still are some great games released from time to time.
Well, for a starter, I'd not download software for a site that use popups.;)
But now I have a question: did you click the "Click To Verify"-link?
If you had done, you'd maybe notice that it says:
is a Spyware FREE website
verified by Aluria Software"
Well that either mean that they don't validate the files avaible at a site, just the site. Or that they didn't see the adware bundled with WeatherBug as spyware.
Too me both of those causes seam valid, well ofcourse I'd not trust their "Spyware Safe"-icons, but as I'd recomend to use open source software if you want it for free, that isn't really a problem.
Interesting lead, I followed it trough some more and checked their site
Luckily, that explained the situation, starring is a marketing company, that were contacted by spray(a Lycos company in Sweden) to Get more people to start using Spray's e-mail service.

You did not noticew that anyone could add their workaround there?
Or was it just that it would have spoiled the joke?
No. You can send them to the planet Marklar if you have spaceships!
